What a year this has beenl When I closed off my Annual Statrynent last year we were looklng to a very PO8ltive start to the year - Iitue dhfj we expect the worthwde pandemic that wa8 about to hit us all wlh particular emph8sk8 on the care industry. H¢V0Var, hr8 we arg one year1gr hawn9 one of the bigg8St challenges in OUT history. having1oarn8d bts of lessons and able to lake prKJe in the fact that we did not suffer any Covid 19 deaths. A lot of this has lo be accr8dit8d to the way that our man8gement team took wnership of Ihe'problem 'and were extremety prowactive in infection control and the purchase of copious quantities of PPE. Of course, even w7th Govemment funding, there has been som6 Impact on our finances but we felt unable to put a monetary value on the INe$ of our residents and staff - both of whiGh we value grealy. I cannot thank them all enough for their great efforts _ the residents for their forbearance and staff for undertaking tasks sometimes outside their usual sccpe and hcurs lo ensure th& safety of all. Whi8t all this has been going on, we h8ve also managed to work ar(nd the vamus kxkdowns to enable us to refurbish large parts of the ¢cYnmunal areas in our residential home and the Agnes House residents and staff hava an vary 4)Wl[vO of upgrades. The Governors have aL80 played trr rol8 and have he•J to quickty gel up to speed remote V•orking on Zoom and have sometmes fell the fruslrat*)n of not being able lo have face to f¥e contsct wth both re81Ients and stsff. Something to keep u5 kjoking forwardl Wyggestons is aayS IcM)kin9 to the future and we were therefore ple89ed to be approached at the very erKI of 2020 by another local Almshou8e regarding Wyggeslons tsking on the rnanagement and Tnjsteeship and as I wri(e this report we are in the process of discussions and Cgrying out due diligence thrc4Jgh our financkwl and 18981 thisers. The budget8 and foreca8ts c¢)ntain a number of assumptions and these have been assessed to consider the sensitiwly of the prolecled perfomiance. Furthemiore, the Charity has secured a medium4em) loan facility of £2.2m for thè purrM)se of financing the remainder of the Lancaster House and ccltag88 capital prq8Ct in 2021, thus alkmng rurring inwning cash resources lo be made available for operational ¢xpenditurg needs. REPORT (CONTINUED FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2020 was not straightfomard, we were paSed to deler a robust annual retum of +8.O•A against a market Ccrte benchmark of +0.3%. The approach adopted by the investsment team is defined as Qualty, Sustainable GroNth. We seek to identffii the beneficiar$ of long-twm structural trends which led us to favour sectors such as Techrlology and HealllKarg in 2020. After the initial market 8elWf in March, markets became much more discoming as lo the companies who would strNe or struggle in a pandemic enwronmenl. We then designed and performed audtt procedures responsive to those risks, includirrfJ obtaining audit evence $4rffi¢Ent and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. We obtained on understanding of the legal and reglatOry framewovk8 Imlhln Ihe Charty operates, focusing on those laws and regulations that have a dir1 effect on the determination of mrial amounts and disclosurès in the financhql slalements. The laws and reguL9tions we consKlefed in this context were the chare¥ AGI 2011 and the Chariti88 SORP {FRS 102). We assesse(l the required compliance with these laws and regulation5 as part of our audit predre5 on thg related financial statement items. In addrtion. we considered provisions of other laws and regulations that do not have a direct effect on the financial statement8 but complk8nce wlh which might be fundamental to the Charity's ability to cFerate OT to avohl a material penalty. We also consider8d the opportunit8 and incentives that may exist within the Charity for fraud. Audrting standards limrt the required audit procedurgs to identty non-compliance wrth those laws gnd rggulations to enquiry of the Trustees and other management and inspectM of regulatory and legal Corrospondence, if any. We identified the greatest risk of material impact on the financial statements from INegularhles, Including fraud. to be the override of controls by management and income recognition. Our audit procedure5 to respond lo these risks included enquiries of management about their own KlenlIfation and a5S8ssment of the risks of ivTegularrties, sample testing on the posting ot jouma18. rewewing accounting èstimat&s for biases, reviewing r&3ulatory corr8spondence including that the Charrty Commission, desigining audit prc¢edure8 to revthv the rwnition of income and reading minutes of meglings of tho$e chargad with gov8fflanc8. INDEPENDENT AUDITOR'S REPORT TO THE MEMBERS OF WYGGESTON'S HOSPITAL CHARITY (CONTINUED)
there remained a higher risk of non-detection of irregularities, as these may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal controls. We are not responsible for preventing non compliance and cannot be expected to detect non-compliance with all laws and regulations.
These inherent limitations are particularly significant in the case of misstatement resulting from fraud as this may involve sophisticated schemes designed to avoid detection, including deliberate failure to record transactions, collusion or the provision of intentional misrepresentations.
Use of our report
This report is made solely to the Charity's Trustees, as a body, in accordance with Part 4 of the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008.
