OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

The objective of the So¢iety is the furtherance of the study of unwrillen evidences of Brrtish history Since thè
Roman period by the publicab'on of a loumal and in any way th81 may be approved from ￿me to lime by the
Council.
Significant activiti•s
The society exists to further the study of the period from the 5th lo the 16th century A.D. by publishing a
joumal of international standing dealing primarily with the archaeological evidence, and by other means such
as by holdin9 regular meetings and arranging conferenGes. Wthile maintsining a special concern for the
medieval archaeology of Britsin and Ireland, the society seeks lo support and advance the intemational
study of this period las broadly defined above) in Europe. It also aims to setve as a medium for
Co-ordinating the work of arGhaeologislg with that of historians and scholars in any other discipline relevant lo
this field.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
Charitsbl• activiti•s
The society has published the annual journal, Meilieval Archaeology and has also publi$hed a monograph
series. Annual excavation summaries are reportgd in 'fiAedieval Britain and Irdand,.
These publications are produced with the aim of extending our knowledge of the medieval period in Britain's
history.
Th8 work of the society is now morè vjidely publicised on our website - www.medievalarchaeolcgy ¢o.uk.

Responslbllitres and basis of report
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the a¢￿Unts in accordance
wlh the requirements of the Charities Ael 2011 Ilhe Act'l.
I report in r8spe¢l of my examination of the Trust's accounts carrfed out under Section 145 of the Act and in
carying out my examinalton I have followed all applicable Oireclions given by the Charity Commission under
Section 14515llbl of the Act.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in
connection with the examination glvlng me cause lo believe that in any material respect..
accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust a5 required by Section 130 of the Act,. or

the accounts do not comply wf(h the applicable requirements con¢eTning the form and content of

ACCOUNTING POLICIES
Basis of preparlng the financlal Statemènts
The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been
prepared in accordance wrth the Charities SORP {FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities..
Stslement of Recommended Practice applicable to ¢haritiè$ p￿parIng their accounts in accordance
th the Financia1 Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland IFRS 1021
leffective 1 January 20191,, Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard
applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland, and the Charities Act 2011. The financial siatemenlg
have been prepared under the historical Cost convention.
Income
All income is recognised In the Statement of Financial Activities once thé charity has enlitlement lo the
funds, f( is probable that the in¢ome will be received and the amount can be mèasured reliably.
Expenditurè
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation
committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits wll be
quired in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is
accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost
related lo the Category. Wkere costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have
been allocated lo activities on a basis ¢on$istenl vAth the use of resources.
Grants offered sublecl lo conditions which have not been mel at the year end dale are noted as a
ommilment but not accrued as expenditure.
Govemance costs
Administration expenses include all expenditure not related lo the charitable activity or lund raising
venluro5.
Taxatlon
The charity is exempt from tsx on ils charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance wilh the charitable objectives at the dis¢ro1ion of the
trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes wlhin the objects of the charity.
Restrictions arise when specbfied by the donor or when funds are raised for parb¢ular restricted
purposes.
