The trustees present thelr report ¥Mth the financial statements of the charity for the year ended
31 March 2024. The Iruslees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities:

Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of I￿ land IFRS 1021 leffeclive 1 January

OBJECTIVES AND ACTivrriES
Objectlves and aims
The objective of the Society 15 the furtherance of the study of unwrillen evidences of British history 8inee the
Roman period by the wblication of a journal and in any way that may be approved from time to time by the
Councll.
Slgnificant aGtlvltl
The society exists to further the study of the period from the 5th lo the 16th century A.D. by publishlng
journal of inlemational standing de?ling primarily with the archaeological evidence, and by other means such
as by holding regular meetings gnd arranging ¢onfergnG8s. While maintaining a special concern for the
medieval archaeology of Britain and Ireland. the society seeks lo support and advance the international
study of this period las broadly defined above) in Europo. It also aim5 to seNe a5 a medium for
ccpordinaling Ihe work of archaeologists with that of historians and scholars in any other discipline relevant lo
this field.
ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Charitable actlvltles
The society has published the annual journal, Medieval Archaeology and has also published a monograph
series. Annual excavation summaries are reported in 'Medieval Britain and Ireland,.
These publications are produced with the aim of exlending our knowledge of the medieval period in Britain's
history.
The work of the society is now more wdely publicised on our website - www.medievalarchaeology.co.uk.

The investment powers are as stated in the Conslilution. The Society does not hold any investments
currently.
FUTURE PLANS

Independent examlnor's raport to the trustees of Soclety for Médiéval Archaeology
I report lo the charity Iruslees on my examination of the accounts of Society for Medieval Archaeolo9y (the
Trust} for the year ended 31 March 2024.
Responslbllities and basis of report
As the charity Iruslees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance
with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 {'Ihe Act'}.
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under Section 145 of the Act and in
carylng ovl my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under
Section 14515llb) of the Act.
Independent examlneff8 Statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in
connecllon with Ihe examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by Section 130 of the Act., or
the accounts do not accord with th08e records,. or
the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of
accounts sel out in the Charllie5 (Accounts and Reports) Regulatlons 2008 other than any
requirement that the accounts 9ive a true and fair view which is not a matter ¢on$iéered as part of an
Independent examinatlon.
I have no concerns and have come across no other mallers in conneGtion with the examination to whlch
attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts lo be
reached.

The financlal slalemenls of the charity. which is a public benef(t entity under FRS 102. have been
prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP IFRS 1021 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities..
Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance
with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland {FRS 1021
{effective 1 January 20191,, Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard
applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland, and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements
have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
Income
All income Is recognised in the Statement of Financial Aclivilie8 once the charity has entitlement to the
funds, il is probable that the income will bo received and the amount can be measured reliably.
Expenditure
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a lègal or conslruclive obligation
committing the charily lo that expenditure, il is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be
required in setuernenl and the amount of the obligalion can be measured reliably. Expenditure is
acwunled for on an aG¢ruals basis and has bgen classified under headings Ihal aggregate ?11 Cost
related to the category. Where Gosts cannot be dire¢lly attributed lo particular headings they have
been alloGaled to xlivilies on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Granls offe￿d subie¢l to conditions which have not been met al the year end date are noted as a
commitment but not accrued as expenditure.
Governance costs
Adminislralion expenses include all expenditure nol related to the charitable activity or lund raising
ventures.
Taxation
The charity is exempl from lax on ils charitable a¢livilie5.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the
trustees.
Reslricled funds can only b8 used for particular restricted purposes within th8 objects of the charity.
ReslriclDns arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular reslricled
purposes.
