As a charity we need to confirm/appoint our officers, accept the 2020 accounts and generally keep ourselves constituted and in being. But, for now, as you will all be aware, it remains unlawful to hold a public meeting in our usual format. Hence the online meeting for which you will need to register as described in the Secretary’s email. You can ask questions in advance, and you can vote, all on the appropriate forms, which you will need to submit in accordance with the Secretary’s instructions. Please get involved – stay engaged, and hopefully we will be back next year with a more traditional meeting. Phil Steele ( _Reports Editor_ ) __________________________________________________________ ## CHAIR’S REPORT – DAVID BROWN we therefore decided to restart the program of evening meetings by holding the AGM. Thanks to help and support from Jonathan Badger, we soon all became very familiar with Zoom and its possibilities. The AGM was short, and very successful and there then followed a series of talks including, in December, a virtual Christmas party, including a Christmas quiz. **----- Start of picture text -----**

During the first lockdown of last year, the committee decided initially to ‘sit it out’, in the expectation that the situation would return to normal by the summer. When it was obvious that this was not going to be the case, we looked for alternative ways of keeping in touch with the members and continuing our program of talks and meetings. We decided in the first instance to draw from our rich pool of local speakers, thereby avoiding any embarrassing problems with the use of Zoom. It proved to be most successful, with minimal hitches along the way. Thanks to Phil Steele, Ian Luck and Jonathan Badger for their contributions, and the excellent attendance was much appreciated. It was also good to see the audience in the comfort of their own homes, having a glass of wine! I am sure that we all missed the opportunity to socialize, but the ease of organizing the events made it very attractive; inviting speakers from far afield, even abroad, becomes possible. We shall be without a gallery, and therefore a venue until late in 2022, so what do we do in the meantime? Going on behind the scenes was the development of the High Street Action Zone (HAZ) plans and the urgent progression of the Gallery, Library and Museum project (GLaM). The committee has been very involved with HAZ, believing that the Gallery and Museum need a thriving town centre, and vice versa. (the classical façade will remain unchanged) We have committed to the enterprise by undertaking to continue with the Cemetery walks, and developing more extensive and frequent Town Tours which will hopefully both start again in the summer/autumn this year. There will be another History Day, or possibly a heritage weekend in 2022, partly in conjunction with Historic England. We will be coordinating a program of volunteer recruitment and training in partnership with Wicksteed Park, Tresham College and Museum Development East Midlands (MDEM). _(artist’s impression of the new part of the GLaM complex)_ The main effort however will be the roll out of the QR codes as part of the promotion of the town’s heritage (HAZ). This has already started, with the production of a couple of prototype plaques. Thank you for your help in selecting the first batch of buildings to be adorned with these plaques. The future looks bright, so don’t forget to renew your membership! ## **THE FRIENDS OF KETTERING ART GALLERY AND MUSEUM ANNUAL REPORTS 2021** ## _Barbara Lewis reports …_ **Secretary’s report: 2020/21** However, after nearly 10 years I feel it is time to step down and to hand over this responsible office to someone else. I have tried to keep members informed throughout the last year and I am pleased that we have maintained our membership, although, with the closure of the museum, and its children’s activities, we have not recruited any new young members. It is with regret that I have decided to resign from the position of secretary Throughout the last year the demands of administration and paperwork have if anything increased other committee members have offered to take on some of the workload and I will for the present continue to administer membership bookkeeping and the art works volunteers. We are looking at ways of engaging with young children and students through activities at ART works The zoom talks have encouraged support from outside the local area and we plan to continue zoom meetings and hope to recruit more members in this way and ensure the reopening of the gallery and museum will be well supported We plan to open art works as soon as covid regulations allow and will use this community space to encourage interest in the work at the museum and gallery as we as encouraging the creative talent and the appreciation of historical heritage of the area. ## **THE FRIENDS OF KETTERING ART GALLERY AND MUSEUM ANNUAL REPORTS 2021** ## **NEWS and VIEWS …** _Barb continues with the story of the Tuesday Art Group …_ The Friends of Kettering Art Gallery and Museum ARTworks community project in the Newlands Centre has provided a lifeline to many during this difficult year. The Friends aim to support the Gallery and Museum but also to take the appreciation of art and culture and of the history of Kettering to the wider community. Lockdown meant that many of our plans for expanding ARTworks with art workshops for teenagers, for other informal art groups, and for extra opening hours were affected. Recruitment of volunteers, particularly college students, and our regular monthly talks at the gallery had to be stopped. Throughout lockdown the Friends posted updates on social media pictures from ARTworks and the Gallery, regular emails and letters to members, all with the hope that we would soon meet again for our talks. We did open art works for a brief period in the summer and in the Autumn. Everyone involved who was not shielding and who felt it was a safe place was pleased to be back and meeting others, and often friends who dropped in to view the works. And, as soon as it was possible after the first lock down the Tuesday art group (which used to meet in the kino lounge) decided that, under the rule of 6, we could meet outdoors, and we were pleased to have something in our diaries. Initially we met in the Manor House Gardens, and various drawings and paintings of the landmarks were produced. Unfortunately, with no access to toilets or refreshments, we were limited on how much time we had. We moved to the Marketplace and, indeed, featured on the _This Is Kettering_ site as examples of coming out of lockdown. We also went to the graveyard and did some rubbings of the greenman face on the trees. We discovered in the summer that we could meet at Green Patch and the good news was there were toilets! When the weather became too cold to sit outdoors, we met, socially distanced, in ARTworks and continued our efforts in the warm. Unfortunately, the _second lockdown_ closed us down - but we are hoping with the better weather to recommence our outdoor meetings, and, eventually, when restrictions ease, to be able to organise workshops for the Tuesday group in ARTworks The group is open to anyone who wishes to come along and meet other people interested in art, and join with others who are willing to support and share their knowledge and experience In November the art group gave us the inspiration to hold an arts and craft fayre at ARTworks - which then had to be postponed, but was successfully held at the beginning of December. It brought some normality to the lead up to Christmas for the many visitors who supported us. As well as offering a range of unique Christmas present ideas, we raised money for Cransley Hospice, Green Patch and the Friends ## **THE FRIENDS OF KETTERING ART GALLERY AND MUSEUM ANNUAL REPORTS 2021** NEWS and Views … ARTworks would love your support This year, in the spirit of sharing the good news, ARTworks has been entered in the People’s Choice category of the Northamptonshire Heritage Forum awards. Please consider voting for us and watch this space for how, where, and when. _(ARTworks exhibits the work of local artists and designers and craftworkers)_ __________________________________________________________________ Maura Bright tells the uplifting story of_ diverse variety of paintings, prints, _ARTworks …_ sculpture, photographs and ceramics by diverse variety of paintings, prints, sculpture, photographs and ceramics by local artists who are all members of the Kettering & District Art Society, but also as a community space: somewhere to host creative projects and art classes at a reasonable cost, craft fairs, a children’s art space and a place for local groups to advertise their work. Two years ago the Friends of Kettering Art Gallery and Museum was very excited to be given this space by the Newlands Centre to open a pop-up art In addition, we are pleased to contribute to the enrichment and beauty of the town centre and to offer affordable art to meet everyone’s taste. Although we are closed now under COVID restrictions we hope to reopen soon so our volunteers (all artists themselves!) can give you a warm welcome, show you around the exhibition to lift your spirits. gallery.
