THE CHILDREN'S BOOTFUND
TRUSTEES REPORT FOR YEARENDING 31-MAY2024
Chairper$on'$ Repert
In 1889 George Gibson began his teaching career in Coventry. He was given Standard IV. a
clas5 of boys many of whom were "wretchedly clothed, under nourished and almost
boot18ss" With the Head Teachers permission, George placed a'boot box" on his desk and
invited visitors and better-off boys to contribute towards the purchase of boots-.in order
that they might attend school"
Foul years later, at a local newspaper office. a meeting of well-known buslnessmen of the
day decided to launch 8 city-wIOe fund involving all Coventry schools. joseph Cash, William
Hillman, john Guison, DrWebb-Folwer, Thomas Bufbage. George Gibson and a police
sergeant named Shelly attended the inaugural meeting.
Today in 2024. the Children's Boot Fund is still very much alive and kicking. After two World
Wars and years ol gloom followed by years of boom, thus unique Charity continues to provide
footwear to children of poorfamilies'in order that they may attend school"
The fund has changed a little in its lifetime. The only re81 difference is perhaps the fact that a
reputable Coventry supplier measures children for properly fitting shoes. Gone are the
often-ill-fitting hob-nailed boots for boys and high lace up type for girls- all boots branded
with an iron stamp to"pievent them going to places other than intended".
8 reference to the
popular pawnshops of the day.
Today, the M8n8gemant Committee are responsible for the application of voucher5. which
when presented by the parenVguardi8n of the reciplent at Charles Ager in Coventry, entitles
the bearer to a pair ot shoes suitable lor school. Applic8tions are made by parentslguardians.
supportecj by Heed Teachers, through all Coventry Schools, wh8re forms are made available
to 811 tamilies. Applications are reviewed by the Trustees atfour meeting each yeaf and
vouchers allocated on individual merit. The Fund has also been able to support refugee
children in the current year and 811 appeals from refugees are dealt with immediately due to
the urgent nature of their cireumst8nces.
Fundraising has increased this ye8r compared to 2023 and the Committee had established
additional fundraisingwith the Charities Aid Fund who also adrninisters our Gift Aid Scheme.
There has been a significant demand for shoes this year. including supporting refugees, and
it is expected to continue in the current economic Climate. It is always difficult to strike
ba18nc8 betW8en securing the future and meeting today's needs. However, the Trustees are
aware that it is important to continue to raise funds as more families require help. The
Trustees wish to thank everyone who has generously contributed to our fund8 during the past
year as they ar8 well aw8re of the financial constraints that we are all experiencing at this
time.
Website developer company Nolsegate Medla has worked wlth G8il Downey for the Boot
Fund at 8 non-profit, cost only basis, giving great value in helping to make the very generous
funding provided by Clive 8enfield extend much further to 8SSi8t our visibility and fundraising.

ThE CHILDREN'S BOOT FUND
TRUSTEES REPORT FOR YEAR ENDING 31 MAY2024
Chairperson'5 Report (continued)
However, the committee is still Suffering from a shortage of members. We therefor8 ask
ag8in, that anyone in the education system willing to join a very dedicated children's Charity
should get In touch wilh any ol the Fund officials, who will then be happy to answer any
questions and give an explanation of the workings of the Charity.
The Committees, thanks go to Charles Ager who have been particularly supportive and given
excellent service to customers and good advice to the Committee.
Lastly. on beh8lf ot the Committee of the Children's Boot Fund, I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all other people who have raised funds in many different ways, often
using 8 great deal of their own time and effort. Without your ettorts. the Fund simply would
not exist to help children in the Coventry area, and to lose the Fund after so many years of
work would b8 a re81 tragedy, both now and in the future.
Treasurer's Report
On the 9 July 2024 Martin Harban who had been the Treasurer for the last 21 years sadly lost
his ¢ourageou$ fight against Cancer. This Charity owes a huge debt of gratitude for all of his
work not only dealing with the role of the Treasurer but also for his outstandingfundraising
8Ctlvities. If you will pardon the pun Martin's death has left large boots to fill and l am
delighted to have been appointed as the Treasurer to this amazing Charity. It has b8en a steep
learning curve having taken on the role just prlor to the year end and l am gratefulto the Board
of Trustees for their support and encouragement and advice they have given to m8 in these
early months of my tenure. I would also personally like to thank Martin's Secretary Valerie
Tunnicliff for all of her work over the p8St decade and also Susan Wyllie in her capacity as
Independent Examiner for her words ofwisdom and guldance whilst I hav8 b88n trying to
prepare the accounts forthe first time.
The Trustee's ieseNes policy will be to continue to maintain a level of resetves at about two
and a half years funding because of the difficulty in predictingthe level of donations from
y8ar to year. Currently the reserves are sufficientfor approximately Imo years to meet the
continuing expected high level of need and the increas8 in shoe costs. Trustees are actlV8ly
looking at ways to fundraise. Without further addition81 donations the number of shoes
provided will have to be reduced.
In previous y88rs in the preparation of the accounts there h88 b8en a distribution of vouchers
to the recipients following the Trustees Meeting in May. A number ol these vouchers are
utilised in June, July, August and even early September which coincides with the start of the
new School Year. In the past the accounts have been prepared in early September and the
exact numbers of vouchers being presented to the local school shoe firm Charles Ager's was
not crystallised. This ye8r due to the delay in the preparation of the annual 8ccounts we have
been able to use the exact figures for the vouchers being used and therefore tor this year
there has been a slight ch8nge in the accounting procedures.

THE CHILDREN'S BOOT FUND
TRUSTEES REPORT FOR YEAR ENDING 31 MAY 2024
Treasurer's Report {continued}
The Trustees have acknowledged this and have agreed that in princlple In futur& years we will
continue to prepare the accounts tOW8rds the end of September/Octoberwhen the number of
vouchers utilised that have been distributed in the financial year ending the 31 May is known
and that way we will presenting the accounts on a like for like basis goingforward.
The Trustees wish to thank 811 supporting schools in the difficult economlc cllm8te. the
generous gifts of the Barston Association, Provinci81 Grand Lodge of Warwickshire, Claverdon
Fields Charitable Trust together with nLsmerous Masonic Lodges, Coventry Church (Municipall
Charities and especially the Darne Alice LeiEh Almshouse Charity. Tile Hill & Westwood
Charities, Soothern & Craner and Newfield Charitable Trust who have been particularly
generous in thelr donations to this Charity.
The Charity endeavours to hold as much cash as possible in an interest-bearing account. For
this financial yearthe expenditure over income was £701.36 lorthe unrestricted tunds and
£1,327.67 for the restricted funds giving a total deficit of £2,029.03.
All administration and committee membership is voluntary and there are no employed
members of the Charity. Administration costs are currently being met by the Tile Hill and
Westwood Charities. Meetings are held by the kind permission of the Secretary at his home
free of charge.
