CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2022

(Registered Number 214436)

This report relates to the year 2022

Streynsham’s Trust uses its income, generated from rents and investments’ dividends, to award its grants. Awards are restricted to those who normally reside in the Ecclesiastical Parish of St Dunstan’s and Holy Cross, Canterbury, Kent or to organisations that can demonstrate they specifically help said residents.

Streynsham’s Trust’s aims are:

1) To promote the education of young persons under the age of 21 who are resident in or attending schools or other educational establishments in the Ecclesiastical Parish of St Dunstan’s with Holy Cross, Canterbury and who are in need of financial assistance. Particularly, but not exclusively, this may mean awarding maintenance allowances or by providing financial assistance for books, clothing, tools or for travel etc.

2) To provide ‘relief in need’ either generally or individually to those resident in the Ecclesiastical Parish of St Dunstan’s with Holy Cross, Canterbury, who are in conditions of need, hardship and distress, by making grants of money or providing or paying for items services or facilities calculated to reduce the need, hardship and distress of these persons.

Streynsham’s Trust has had another successful year. Revenue for the Trust continues to come principally from rents from properties [£57,049] and interest from investments [£28,166]. The Trust’s balance sheet shows an increase on last year. Our unit holdings were valued at £751,775 [from 827,124 in 2021] and our housing stock, which consists of 5 cottages and a semi-detached dwelling, is valued at £1,626,916 [from £1,486,311 in 2021]. Streynsham’s Trust’s policy is that it spends its entire income on its objectives, saving only money as necessary to ensure adequate cash-flow and to allow for expenditure to protect its investments, which produce its income i.e. the housing stock.

In carrying out its activities, the trustees have given due regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.

The Trust made a variety of donations amounting to a total of £51,982 [from £47,967 in 2021]. Grants in general included assistance to students with higher/ further education fees and support to a number of school children to enable them to take part in educational activities which otherwise, on account of cost, they could not have taken part in; the Trust assisted many elderly people to obtain Lifeline telephone support and the Trust also assisted a number of people residing in the Parish who, for a variety of reasons, needed support to purchase essential goods or services. Grants were also made to a number of organisations such as Canterbury Food Bank, Age UK, East Kent Rape Crisis Centre, Porchlight, Canterbury Shopmobility, L’Arche and Pilgrims Hospices.

The Trust has one sub-committee: Finance and Housing. This committee reports to the trustees. This allows some of the more detailed work to be conducted at these committees and expertise residing within the Board to be used more effectively.

2022 has been a successful year and we hope that 2023 will prove to be even more successful as we strive to make more and more people aware of the work of the Trust.

Mr David Bentley

Chairman
