The Falkland Ha]1 was originally built as a large merchant house in 1558 by Edmund
Silvester. It became the Falkland Hall at around the time it was sold by the Recreation
Society to the Town Institufr in 1920. Over the years the ground floor was used &8 a
hall for meetings and entertainment, and the top floor w&$ a Men's Institute.
In the 1960's the Hall had become ne8lected the then Trustees con]menced letting the
building on a commercial basis.
A new T￿￿t scheme came into being in 1974 and ran until the present scheme was
sealed on I l February 1985 as tbe Falkland Hall Charity. The title to the land and
building is vested in the Official Custodian for Charities in trust for the Falkland Hall
Charity
Under the 1985 Charity Scheme, the Tn￿tres have the Option to use all or part of the
buildin8 as a community centre or lease the building for the best reni possible.
The Truslees must firsily apply the charity's income in tneeting the proper costs of
administerin¥ the charity and of managin8 its property {includin8 the repair and
insurance of its buildings). After payment of these costs, the Trustees shall apply the
remaining inwme as they think fit for any chw7table purposes for the general benefit
of the inhabitants of the Town of Burford and the nei8b￿urho0d thereof.
A bank account is held with TSB bank.
Investments are held in funds with M&G tnvestments and CCLA COIF Charity
Funds.
The Extraordinary Repair Fund is held within these investments.
The commercial and residential lets are managed by Marriott's Property LLP
During 2024 the TTUStees fulfilled the requirements of the charity scheme.
The Trustees have purchased The Old Barn. Swan Lane, Burford for conversion to a
Community Archive Centre for the lown, with a studio apartsnent providing income to
make the project sustainable. Pethers of Burford started the conversion in May 2021
and completed in November 2022 when the opening ceremony took place.
Major support for the project has been received from West Oxfordshire District
Council, Burford Town Council, Burford Festival, Burford & District Society. private
Trust Funds, individual donors and a range of enthusiastic community fundraising.
A new management committee has been formed to jointly manage and nm the
Burford Tolsey Museum and Archive and have a new website: . burfordtolsey.or8
