The Falkland Hall was originally built as a large metcbant house in 1558 by Edmund
Silvester. It became the Falkland Hall at around the time it was sold by the Recreation
Society to the Town Institutc in 1920. Over the years the ground floor used as a
hall for meetings and entertainmenL and the top floor H'as a Men s Inslitute.
In the 1960's the Hall had become neglected the then Trustees commenced letting the
building on a commercial basis.
A new Trust scheme came into being in 1974 and ran until the present scheme was
sealed on I l Febnwy 1985 &8 the Falkland Hall Charity. The title to the land and
building is vested in the Officlal Custodian for Charities in tnLSt for the Falkland Hall
Charity
Under the 1985 Charity Schem@ the Trustres have the Option to use all or part of the
building as a community centre or Iwe the building for the best rent possible.
I"he Trustees must firstly apply the charity's income in mecting the proper costs of
administering the chartty and of managing its property (including the repair and
insurance of its buildings). After paymenl of these costs, the Trustees shall apply the
remaining income &8 they think fit for any charitable purposes for the 8eneral benefit
of the inhabiiants of the Town of Burford and the neighbourhood thereof.
A bank account is held wtth TSB bank.
Investments are held in funds with M&G Investments and CCLA COIF Charity
Funds.
The Extraordinary Repair Fund is held within these investments.
The commercial and residential lets are managed by Marriott's Propety LLP
During ?0?3 the Trustees fulfilled the requirements of thc charity scheme.
The Trustees have purchased The Old Barn, Swan Lane, Burford for conversion to a
Community Archive Centre for the town, with a studio apartment providing income to
make the project sustainable. Pethers of Burford started the conversion in May 2021
and completed in November ?02? when the opening ceremony took place.
Major support for the project has Ettn received from West Oxfordshire District
Council, Burford Town Council, Burford Festival, Burford & District Society, privat
Trust Funds, individual donors and a range of enthusiastic community fundraising.
A new management committee has been fomied to joirffttly manage and the
Burford Tolsey Museum and Archive and have a new website: _ burfordtolsey.org
