The Falkland Hall was originally built as a large D￿r¢I18nt hO￿￿e in 1558 by Edmund
Sllvester. It became the Falkland Hall at around the tim¢ it was sold by the Recreation
Society ￿ the Towi I[￿ItUte in 1920. Over the years the ground floor was ￿ed as a
hall for meetings and entertainmenL and the top floor was a Men s Insiitute.
In the 1960's the Hall had become neglected the then Trustees commenced letting the
building on a commercial basis.
A new Trust scheme came into being in 1974 and rdn until the Present scheme w&$
sealed on I l February 1985 as the Falkland Hall Chariry. The title to the land and
building is vested in the Official Custodian for Charities in tru￿ for the Falkland Hall
Charity
Under the 1985 Charity Scheme, the Tr￿slee$ have the option to use all or part of the
buildin8 as a community centre or lease the building for the besl Tent possible.
The Trustees must firstly apply the charily's income in meeling the proper costs of
administcring the charity and of managing ils properry (including the repair and
Ansurance of its buildin¥s). After payment of these costs, the Trustees shall apply the
remaining income as they think fit for any charitable pufj)oses for the genernl benefit
of the inhabitants of the Town of BurfoTd and the nei8hbouthood thereof.
A bank account is held with TSB bank.
5nv¢stments are held in fimds with M&G Investments and CCLA COIF Charity
Funds.
The Extraordinary Repair Fund is held within these investments.
The commercial and residential lets are managed by Marriott's Property LLP
During 2022 the Trustees f￿rIlled the requirements of the charity scheme.
The Trustees have pwchased The Old Barn, Swan Lane, Bwford for conversion to
Community Archtve Centre for the town, with a studio apartsnent providkng income to
rnake the project sustainable. Pethers of Burford started the conversion in May 2021
and completed in November 2022 when the opening ceremony took place.
Major supwrt for the project has been received from West Oxfordshire District
Council, Burford Town Council, Burford Festival, Burford & District Societv, private
Trust Funds, individual donors and a range of enth￿sIastiC community fundraising.
A new management committee has been fonned to jointly manage and nm the
Burford Tolsey Museum and Arcbive and have a new website: _ burfordtolsey.org
