## **Report on the year**

This year has seen celebrations of 200 years of diplomatic and trade ties between UK and Chile and we have been pleased to work with both the Embassy of Chile in London and the UK Embassy in Chile. The Anglo Chilean Society though remains an independent and apolitical and areligious organisation. In the last year our activities have celebrated past, present and future Chile. Events have included a book launch about the writer, historian and politician Benjamin Vicuña MacKenna; a visit to the IMO (International Maritime Organisation) which includes a bust of Chile’s Piloto Pardo, pivotal in the rescue of Shackleton’s men from Antarctica; in partnership with several mining companies, a keynote conference with Aurora Williams, Chile’s Minister of Mining, highlighting the exciting future ahead for Chile with critical minerals and hydrogen energy; the dance excellence and creativity of the Ballet de Santiago; and archeoastronomy on Easter Island.

Through our charitable work projects supported include equipment to build up sewing and handicrafts in the community of Santa Juana, badly hit by Chile’s forest fires; art workshops for the elderly; science and energy workshops for young people; solar panels for the Rapa Nui Planetarium and Observatory; a biography of the Chilean footballer, George Robledo; a UK tour of Chilean music and musicians; a semi documentary on Concepción celebrating a myth of Pink Floyd; Chilean artists at both the London Design Biennale and the London Art Biennale; contribution to the launch of the award winning Chilean documentary ‘The Eternal Memory’ and the creation of stained glass memorial church windows on Rapa Nui.

As we enter our 80th year we will continue to further the objectives of the Society and hope you will join us in our events and activities.

## **The Accounts**

Overall, **General Funds’** income increased by some £11,500 compared with 2022. Key factors were inclusion of a donation, delayed from 2022, from one of our Mining Conference sponsors, additional and more generous sponsorship for the 2023 conference itself and the receipt of the major portion of

the funds raised by the sale of the art works so generously donated in 2022 by the Late Mrs Pola Mr Emanuel de Kadt. This additional income enabled us to make 11 grants with a grand total of over £26,000. Details are shown in the Notes to the Accounts. The generosity of our grant making resulted in a deficit of £3,340, reduced to £2,710 by the inclusion of the transfer for the management of the AME Fund.

**AME** income, which comes entirely from the endowed investment portfolio, was unchanged from last year at £6,300, but only two grants were made leaving a balance of £860 to carry over into 2024. The portfolio, book value £130,000, had a market value of £179,319 at the year-end. The society ended the year with total funds of £31,766.

## **Sponsors**

The Society is particularly grateful to by Antofagasta PLC, Anglo American PLC, Rio Tinto PLC, London Metal Exchange, ME ELECMETAL and Teck for their support and thanks are due also to the Embassy for allowing the Society the use of office accommodation.
