Chairman’s Report
To me it feels like trying to run a race on one leg. After the first lockdown, gaining a bit of momentum through the summer period, then joining the tier system, followed by two further lock downs with very serious developments. Hopefully, we can now see light at the end of the tunnel with vaccinations coming. Having to cancel two National Shire Shows makes it very hard for the breed, with no shop windows to promote and support the Society. Thanks, must be expressed to all those who have offered and given financial support and who have tried to organise a show for this year.
as usual with registrations and stallion premiums. The income this year will obviously be down because there has been no opportunity to do sales and promotions at the shows and other events. This will be seen in the accounts for this very difficult year. Meetings have been restricted but several committees, AGM and one Council meeting have been held by ZOOM. The President the Countess of Wessex attended the Council meeting virtually in October. During the year, the Secretary Victoria Clayton has called on the Chairpersons for support in actions that have had to be taken.
social media have been carried out. Extensive work has been undertaken to bring the Articles of Association and Governance up to date. This has needed to be done to bring the Articles in line with the Charity Commission rules.
To everybody concerned in running this great Society I would like to give my heartfelt thanks and look forward to seeing you all virtually at the AGM. Stay safe.

Secretary’s Report
Sitting to write the year that was 2020 leaves me drawing somewhat of a blank!
We sadly lost our show in 2020 and we have just announced that the 2021 show has also fallen victim to the coronavirus pandemic. We have to keep hopeful for shows and events later in the year after the vaccination programme has been rolled out.
I would like to issue a public thank you to the members for their support in the last 12 months, it has been a tortuous year for everyone. It is wonderful to have members who love the breed and have been generous with funds but also with their time in calling the office to make sure the staff are coping. That means a great deal, thank you.
The Show Committee have launched a Society Raffle, with cash prizes to be won. We have enclosed with this mailing tickets for you to purchase or sell to friends and neighbours. Tickets are also available to purchase online. We are very grateful to generous supporters for the donation of the prizes, thank you!
It is election time again; the three-year term passes very quickly for those standing for re-election. I am again delighted to see several new faces and respected Shire members taking the opportunity to stand for Council.
Please do take time to read the CVs of the candidates, and remember that it is you, the members who elect the men and women who will help
shape the way in which the Society is run. Please do use your vote.
The office staff of Angela, Sharon, Sue and I are all here to help and along with Council members to encourage newcomers and new members in any way we can.
We are all passionate about the breed and we all strive to help preserve, promote and protect the horse that put the Great into Britain.
On behalf of the Shire Horse Society I would like to take the opportunity to thank you the members for your continued support.

1. WELCOME ADDRESS
The President took the Chair and thanked everyone for joining the virtual meeting which was held via Zoom owing to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The President highlighted the challenges the whole country has faced in both business and employment and hoped that everyone was coping in the crisis and especially with their health.
The President stated that in normal circumstances the AGM would have been held at the National Shire Horse Show, but along with all public events it had to be cancelled. Whilst this has been one of the biggest challenges that many of us will have encountered in our lifetime, he said we should remain positive and take the opportunities this may present as we go forward and go into 2021.
People have learnt new skills from cycling to baking and the President believes that what members do with their horses and particularly on the education side presents
some opportunities in 2021. Where events are held in 2021 it will offer the Society the chance to take advantage to showcase the breed.
2. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE
Apologies were received from Ms C Christian, Mr J D Kay, Mr P Lawson, Mr J Medhurst, Mr G Robinson, Mr T C F B Sligo-Young, Miss M A J Swinley, OBE, Captain C Trenchard Jarrett, Mrs R Wells and Mr N Wray.
3. MINUTES OF THE LAST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD ON 22ND MARCH 2019.
The Minutes had been circulated to all members in the Annual Report and Accounts 2019.
4. MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES
The President asked if there were any matters arising from the Minutes. There were no matters arising and Mr A J Wass proposed the Minutes should be signed as a true and correct record. Mr J C Etches seconded the proposal. Members agreed.
5. RECEIVE REPORT OF THE COUNCIL AND STATEMENT OF ACCOUNTS
The Honorary Treasurer, Mr R H F Fuller took the Members through the accounts for the year ended September 2019 as set out in the Annual Report.
Drawing attention to page 11 there were some key figures to look at.
i) Income is down by £3,156 to £359,818 in particular because of a year on year decline in legacies and donations of £33,037 to £92,846. Membership subscriptions have also fallen by 5% to £44,343.
ii) During the same period costs have risen by £38,909 to £377,075 as the costs associated with the production of the Stud Book and Service books has risen.
iii) This means that overall, the Society has reported a loss of £17,257 before considering the small loss of £4,040 we have made on our investments which can of course go up or down in the short term.
Shire Horse Society
Annual Report and Accounts 2020
6
Many of the details in these accounts were shown in the Notes to the Accounts on page 14.
Mr Fuller drew Member’s attention to Notes 5 and 7 on page 16. From the notes Members saw that the 2019 National Shire Horse Show made a deficit of £3,984. Although this is still a loss, he reminded Members that the accounts have improved considerably from six years ago when the show lost £50,000. Mr Fuller thanked Mr John Peacock and his team for all their hard work. The aim is to make a surplus going forward, but the Society should always remember that the show is the key part of its Charitable Aims of educating the public about Shire horses and therefore the focus is not just about profit.
Turning to page 12; the Balance Sheet shows in simple terms what the Assets of the Society are at the end of the Financial Year. Mr Fuller said that the Assets had fallen from £939,008 last year to £917,711 this year. This was for several reasons but primarily as the amount of cash that the Society had has fallen in line with the increase in the costs. The value of the Society’s investments fell only slightly to £852,263 despite the turmoil in the markets and the reduction in legacy income that Mr Fuller mentioned before. Members were reminded that investments, can go down as well as up but as the Society’s policy is to invest for the long term, any fluctuations tend to smooth themselves out.
Mr Fuller is happy with the way James Sharp is handling the Society’s investments and he stays in regular contact with them to discuss the Portfolio.
Mr Fuller reported that during the year the Society purchased a new promotional vehicle, part funded by
donations, which although as you will see from Note 13 to the accounts is down as a new Asset, also gives rise to an additional Depreciation charge to the Profit and Loss account of £5,334.
The Society moved into new offices, which are a huge improvement on the previous ones but the move as expected incurred some set up costs. Once permitted to do so Mr Fuller encouraged everyone to pay a visit to see the office for themselves and thanked those donors and in particular Cliff Meddings for their contributions.
Mr Fuller said the decline in legacies highlights their importance. The Society is very grateful for what it receives. Every year something seems to arrive, completely unexpectedly and always very generously. A charity needs its legacies and donations, and Members all need to work hard to encourage their friends and supporters for help. Mr Fuller added that the Society should endeavour to live within its means. Excluding the legacies, the Society is running at a deficit and it would be nice to turn this into a surplus.
At this point, although it is not relevant to the year in review, Mr Fuller said he should probably mention that the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic has had a significant impact on the current year that means the Society has had to curtail some of its planned expenditure. The cancellation of the Show and the poor stock market performance (although this is recovering) means that the Society is having to be very careful about how it spends any money but balancing that with the need to ensure the Society is meeting all its obligations. The picture is starting to become clearer, but we have effectively
had to say goodbye to most of the Shows that the Society might have attended and the related income. Mr Fuller paid particular thanks to the Secretary and her team who worked very hard in difficult circumstances for all they have done.
Mr Fuller is very keen that the Society does not use its capital to support the day to day running of the Society and he will be trying to make sure that only the income generated from its investments, which now stands at nearly £26,000 pa, is transferred to the Current Account.
Mr Fuller said we are living in very unpredictable times and we must take every opportunity to review what we do and how we do it. The Society should be looking to increase its efficiency, especially in its use of technology and also to find ways of cutting its costs.
Mr Fuller said he has mentioned many times before, the need for fundraising remains great and we all need to consider how to address this.
In summary, the Society is making progress in achieving the objectives it set itself when moving to its own offices despite the recent setback. Mr Fuller said that our intention was to steady the ship and then re-invest with a wide range of initiatives to help support our breeders and our members, and to attract further legacy income. This will help complement the hard work, enthusiasm and support provided worldwide by our Secretary, Staff, Members, Stewards, Officials, Clients, local societies, and enthusiasts for the Shire Horse Society.
The Hon. Treasurer asked if there were any questions. Mr S J Peacock asked a question on behalf of Mr
www.shire-horse.org.uk 7
J Bryant. On page 23 (Charitable Activities) Mr Bryant asked why the life membership subscriptions had gone down by £100 from £6,293 in 2018 to £6,139 in 2019 as he understood they could not go down. The Hon Treasurer replied that this account is not just the balance of the life membership funds but shows new life memberships during the year. It was noted there were less taken out in 2019. Mr D Baker confirmed Mr Fuller’s answer was correct and it was a very small fluctuation. Mr S J Peacock agreed to relay the message to Mr Bryant.
There being no further questions the Hon. Treasurer asked Members for a proposer and a seconder to adopt the accounts year ending September 2019. Mr S J Peacock proposed that the accounts should be adopted, and Mr A H Brown seconded the proposal.
The President thanked the Hon. Treasurer for his comprehensive report and said that there was no surprise in where the Society is at with the impact that COVID-19 has had, and the Society’s investments are extremely well managed and added that we have all been slightly surprised at some of the more recoveries we have already seen. Although the Society couldn’t hold its Show this year it’s extremely encouraging to see the results from the Show last year and the President said the Society should remember that and when we start planning for the 2021 Show we should give it that extra bit of vigour and make sure it’s fantastic and we generate a profit.
6. ELECTION OF COUNCIL MEMBERS
Mr D Baker from CFW Accountants LLP who acted as the Scrutineers confirmed that they had received 292 voting papers of which 288 were counted.
The Candidates duly elected were:
Mr W Bedford (194) Mr L M Fountain (160)
Mr M Bedford (179) Mr D Yates (158) Mr D Worthington (175) Miss A Hull (154) Mr R Green (175) Mrs Y Simmons (138) Mr P Shipman (174) Mr D Mouland (122) Mr S J Peacock (171) Miss A Chetwood (120)
The Council members were duly elected and congratulated. Grateful thanks were recorded to Mr D Baker for his assistance.
7. APPOINTMENT OF INDEPENDENT EXAMINER
Mr T J Yates proposed that CFW Accountants LLP should be re-appointed as the Society’s Independent Examiners. This was seconded by Mr R H F Fuller. All agreed.
8. ANY OTHER BUSINESS
Mrs D Badger commented that seeing the reactions from the Show being cancelled there was a lot of emotional disappointment and if that can be carried to 2021 Mrs Badger thinks the Society can pull off a Show that will not only be brilliant but will also show a positive in the bank balance for a first time in many years. Mrs Badger recorded her thanks to the Society’s staff who had to deal with the outcome of having the Show cancelled. She said it was a terrific disappointment for them, but they picked up and ran and got it all sorted in a respectable time. The President also agreed with her comments and the Secretary thanked Mrs Badger.
Mr S Ledsham understood that the Memorandum and Articles of Associated were deemed to be out of date and asked if there had been any progress on updating them. The Hon. Treasurer replied that over the last twelve months the Society had been talking to Lawyers about the best way to proceed and he stated that these things do take a lot of time to complete as they are very complex. Mr Fuller hoped that progress would be made over the
next twelve months and would be reported to the membership in time. Mrs Y Simmons as a new member of Council requested a copy of the old Memorandum and Articles of Association. The Hon. Treasurer responded that there is some confusion as to which ones are the current set and suggested that at some point the Society would circulate what will change in the document. Mrs Simmons replied that she would like to have a copy because she is a new member of Council. The Hon. Treasurer asked to discuss this offline with Mrs Simmons.
The President echoed the thanks that had already been mentioned to the team at the office and thanked the Committee Members whose meetings will continue via the Zoom facility during the lockdown. Thanks, were also expressed to everyone on Council and indeed the wider membership for the support they have given. Again, the President looks forward to the Show in 2021 as well as looking forward to the season in 2021 because last year he managed to visit a few Shows which he too has missed this year.
The President said the Society should remain positive as it is in a strong position and to stay united and move things forward so the Society can recover from this.
The President asked members to continue to look out for each other both now and in the future. It has been a challenging time for everyone and in his role at Hook Norton Brewery he stated it had been the most challenging time for them in their 170 years; but it also potentially offers the greatest opportunity and this applies to the Society too. The President thanked everyone for their support and the Society will update members when the new President is announced.
There being no further business the President thanked members for attending the virtual AGM and declared the meeting closed at 10:35am.

Council Report
YEAR ENDED 30TH SEPTEMBER 2020
The Members of Council who are also Trustees and Directors present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 September 2020. The trustees have adopted the provisions of the Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) “Accounting and Reporting by Charities” (FRS 102) as applicable to charities in preparing the annual report and financial statements of the charity, in accordance with the applicable law and the United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice - UK GAAP), including FRS102; The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

OBJECTIVES AND AIMS
The Society’s principal objective is the improvement and promotion of the English Cart Horse, more particularly, the Shire Horse, and to this end, maintaining a Stud Book in which are entered the names of all registered Shire Horses complying with the conditions for the time being applied by the Society.
To meet the objective the Society has established an expert Judging Panel, introduced a comprehensive system of DNA testing for all Pedigree animals and devised a Stallion inspection scheme in order to ensure that male animals used for breeding meet strict conformation and health criteria and introduced training courses.
The Society is generously assisted in its breeding policies by a grant from the Horserace Betting Levy Board which itself sets strict conditions for grant payment. The grant aided work is regularly reviewed by both parties in order to ensure its effectiveness.
The Charity has due regard during the year to the guidance published by the Charities Commission on public benefit.
NATIONAL SHIRE HORSE SHOW 2020
Sadly, owing to the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic, the National
Shire Show was not able to be held. The show was the first of the casualties of its kind during the 2020 show season. Its loss has been very much felt by all within the Society.
EXPORTS
Specific numbers of horses exported are no longer recorded. Records from Stud Book entries and overseas attendance at the Spring Show indicate that the demand for quality horses abroad continues to be strong. Society members do not always notify the Society of exports therefore it is difficult to maintain accurate export figures.
MERCHANDISE AND MARKETING
The Society’s promotional activities were placed on hold in 2020 and attendance at events was not possible due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The Society has continued to promote where possible and driven sales of merchandise using its own website and social media pages. The coming year will face significant challenges.
STALLION PREMIUM SCHEME
In 2020 thirty eight Stallions (2019 – thirty two) received Premiums or Grant. The Super Premium Scheme was discontinued in 2019.
SHIRE HORSE SOCIETY APPROVED CENTRES
The approved centres offer visitor experience and training facilities. The Trustees continue to consider the options available and develop a programme of activities that yield the maximum educational, training and promotional benefits for the Society and supporters. The Society awarded Approved Centre status to two new centres in 2020, these being Blists Hill Victorian Town, Ironbridge and Dyfed Shire Horse Farm, Pembrokeshire.
NATIONAL SHIRE HORSE TRUST FUND
The financial objective of the Society remains to increase the accumulated fund at a rate not less than inflation for the current year thus ensuring that the purchasing power of the fund is maintained. The financial attitude of the Society remains to pursue a break even position financially, without the historic dependence on donations or legacies. By doing so, any excess income can be utilised in a more beneficial way for the breed generally.
For this year, the net movement in funds had a negative movement of £224,924 (2019- negative movement of £21,297). This is principally due to the negative impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on our
www.shire-horse.org.uk 25
investments. The Trust Fund is used firstly and most importantly to further the Society’s charitable objectives including the promotion of the Shire horse both at home and overseas and to also meet the Society’s operating costs. In addition, the Society is required to contribute to the Stallion Fund at a level of 20% of the funding received from the Horserace Betting Levy Board. The Society’s contribution is taken from the Trust Fund.
SOCIETY GOVERNANCE
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust and constitutes a limited company, limited by guarantee as defined by the Companies Act 2006.
The Charity is governed by Council Members who meet at least twice a year. The Council has established a committee structure to deal directly with specific aspects of the Society’s affairs. These committees currently are:
The EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE dealing with financial matters and the day to day operation of the Society along with the CEO. Among those serving on this committee are the Chairmen of Editing and Training Committee and Show Committee.
The EDITING AND TRAINING COMMITTEE are responsible for all matters relating to the Stud Book, pedigrees and the appointment, training and maintenance of an
expert and active panel of Judges. The SHOW COMMITTEE are responsible for all matters relating to the National Show.
The DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE deal with all matters concerning the conduct of Members.
All Council and Committee members are volunteers who receive no payment for their services. The National Show in March, is also run, in part, by Stewards who give their time in a voluntary capacity.
The Governance of the Society is currently under review by Solicitors and the Council have approved a first draft of the structure of the Society. This is an ongoing project.

Financial Accounts
The final accounts show an overall decrease in net funds of £224,924 (2019: decrease £21,297) as shown on the Statement of Financial Activities.
The Society received legacy income totalling £61,490 (2019: £53,487). This source of revenue remains important to the Society in improving the capital base and investment income. The Society Council has agreed it is not appropriate to rely on legacy income.
The Council and Executive have identified loss making exercises; it intends to continue to maximise the income resources available. The Society realised gains of £28,522 (2019 - £7,040) on sale of investments during the year. At the balance sheet date the Society had unrealised losses of £210,888 (2019: £11,080). The market value of the Society’s investments at the end of the year was £591,740 (2019: £852,263) and is higher than their original cost of £323,723.
FUTURE PROSPECTS
Prospects, as for 2021 look increasingly challenging, with the pandemic creating additional obstacles for the Society to navigate. The net assets are valued at £692,787 (2019: £917,711) but the Society is well placed to continue developing a range of new initiatives to assist Shire Breeders and encourage new owners.
The Society considers that the National Show as an essential tool to promote the Shire both at home and overseas. It is very disappointing that the show was not able to take place in 2020. Additionally we have just announced the cancellation of the 2021 show due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
RISK MANAGEMENT
Council Members will continue to review the systems that are in place to mitigate the Society’s exposure to major risks.
RESERVES POLICY
The Society maintains a prudent level of reserves to generate income to help fund the activities that further the Society’s charitable aims and objectives. This income is intended to counter large fluctuations in irregular income such as legacies and help fund the Spring Show.
AUDITORS AND INDEPENDENT EXAMINER
The Society is no longer required to undertake a full audit, CFW Accountants LLP have undertaken an independent examiners review and their report is enclosed.
This report has been prepared in accordance with the special provisions of Part 15 of the Companies Act 2006 relating to small companies.

EXISTING COUNCIL MEMBERS STANDING FOR RE-ELECTION
Please note only five council meetings have taken place instead of the usual six due to Coronavirus Pandemic.
MR A H BROWN
Meetings attended 4 of 5 (1 apology received)
It was a great honour to be elected onto the Council and serve on the Show Committee three years ago. I hope I have been seen to be a valuable and positive member. I wish to continue to actively promote this majestic breed which I have been involved with for fifty years. I feel passionate about providing our young forthcoming members with support and knowledge to carry on this great Society, promoting the Shire Horse long into the future, and to do this I hope I have your support for re-election.
MR M BURKS
Meetings attended 5 of 5
I have been involved with Shires all my life - breeding, showing and marketing them, having now served 4 terms on the Society Council as well as the show committee.
I feel I still have a lot to offer the Society and the breed’s future and will continue to do all I can to promote the uses and versatility of the breed. I am a huge supporter of young people in the breed, having shown in young handler classes myself, as well as encouraging newcomers to the breed. With your vote I shall serve the breed to the best of my ability in these challenging times.
MR J C ETCHES Meetings attended 5 of 5
I have been a life member for over 40 years following in the footsteps of my Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather. I am proud to still continue to breed, exhibit and judge our magnificent Shire horses. I am currently on the Editing committee and have worked previously on the Executive committee and on the stallion approval and premium panel. I am dedicated to helping promote and improve the breed both locally and nationally and will continue to support the interests of all members of the Shire Horse Society. I would be honoured with your support to serve another term on the Council.

MR L E HARRISON
Meetings attended 4 of 5 (1 apology received)
If re-elected I will continue to put forward what I believe to be the views of the majority of members without regard to self-interest. The Society needs to actively encourage and help anyone with an interest in owning or breeding Shires whilst maintaining the standard in the breed. We have an ever increasing number of members and breeders outside the UK, this must be nurtured and reflected in all aspects of the Society. I also believe that we must be more open about Society business where possible, public support is vital if the breed is to survive and prosper.
MR M HORLER
Meetings attended 5 of 5
I have been a member of The Shire Horse Society Since 1973 and a lifelong member for over 20 years. Also a member of Council for nearly 30 years, serving on all the committees, Editing, Training and at the moment on the Executive. Over the years we have held regional meetings and Stallion inspections at our farm, and I have always done all I can to support The Shire Horse Society and its members.
MR C MALKIN
Meetings attended 3 of 5 (2 apologies received)
I would like to serve another term on Council to try and help the Society find ways of keeping our members enthusiasm during this unprecedented times.
As a shire horse owner and breeder myself I understand how difficult 2020 has been for everyone and the Society. Here at Lockley Shires I will continue do the best I can for the breed and help those with the same passion.
MR P MOSS
Meetings attended 4 of 5 (1 apology received)
I have served on the Shire Council for many years now, and feel that I would like to be part of the Shire body for one more term. I breed some seven or eight foals each year together with supporting some 18 shows. Throughout the length and breadth all over the country, but my main passion is the members. Without you, the Society would not function also the new young breeders and show people who are most valuable to the future success of the Shire Horse Society. If I can be of any help to these important new comers, they can count on me for any advice and knowledge that I can offer.
MRS D E NULTY Meetings attended 3 of 5 (2 apologies received)
I don’t make promises that I can’t or won’t keep. For the past 22 years I have served on the Shire Horse Council and I have done everything in my power to preserve the pure Shire. I have put forward the opinions and requests of the membership I serve. I have never been afraid to speak up and say my piece. For over thirty-five years I have championed the cause of young handlers and the need for encouraging them and new blood into the Society to secure the future of the breed. I promote the Shire horse the length and breadth of the British Isles. The true Shire has been and will always be the passion that drives me. Nothing’s changed.
MR D ROBERTS Meetings attended 5 of 5
My name is Danny Roberts Dip WCF I am based in Devon with a huge passion for shire horses which I show and breed. I have already served on the Council for 3 years and I am also currently standing on the Editing and Training committee and I would love to continue my work for the Society and breed being the youngest serving member. My passion is to involve the next generation and keep the breed striving forward, I was due to judge the young handlers which has unfortunately been cancelled for the last two shire horse national spring shows. Hopefully we will get back to normal next year and working together we will keep the amazing shire horse striving forward for generations to come.

Meetings attended 5 of 5
I am currently on the SHS Council Executive Committee. If fortunate enough to be re-elected, I will continue to act as an independent voice for the membership, particularly the riders/drivers. To campaign for further transparency, inclusion and accountability whilst assisting with the challenges the Society has in these unprecedented times to ensure the future safety of the breed. I believe the Society has made huge strides in modernisation but has much work to do. I have a commercial business background, am an owner/competitor (Eversley Shires) but do not have any business interests in the breed.
MR B A WINN Meetings attended 5 of 5
As a long term member, I have gained extensive experience and have made considerable contributions whilst preserving and promoting Shire Horses in the UK and further afield. I am actively involved in breeding, showing and judging Shire horses both at home and abroad. I sponsor the Young Handler class at the National Show along with two other Council members. It is important to encourage young people who are interested in Shires as they are the future for the breed and for the Society. If I am fortunate enough to be elected, I have been asked by the Council to join the Editing committee where I will continue to put your points forward. I will continue to encourage new people to get involved as well as supporting the showing and ridden classes.
NEW CANDIDATES STANDING FOR ELECTION
MR P BOWER
MRS D BADGER
Hi, I’m Denise Badger of Bickerscourt Shires and I have had the good fortune to have been around Shires all of my life. My passion is breeding Shires. I am part of the committee that successfully delivered the first Heavy Horse Camp in 2019 and hopefully will deliver another later in 2021. I enjoy supporting the Society to promote the breed at events throughout the year. I am passionate about keeping diversity in the Shire gene pool so that we can maintain and develop the standards of the Shire horse. It would be a great honour to be elected to Council and I would work hard to represent Society members.
I have been involved with shire horses for nearly 40 years and I am the founder of Thames Oak Shires, I am also Chairman of South Eastern Shire Horse Association. If elected I would give 100% commitment to the role, such is my passion for the breed. I want to work with the Society for the reasons it was established and to secure a bright future for the shire horse.
MRS H PREECE
DR H ZIMAN
I joined Robinsons Brewery, Stockport in 2002. I became headhorseman in 2013. For the last 5 years I have been part of the SHS demo team, and regularly represent the Society up and down the country, promoting the breed which I am extremely passionate about. I have also gained approved centre status for work. I feel that I would bring a modern viewpoint if my application was successful, to help move the Council forward into a modern day Society. Maintaining traditions but ensuring the Society stays relevant.
I want to champion the ordinary owner of a shire horse; people like me. We school our own horses, take them out hacking, and train them to drive or work. Our shires are not merely magnificent curiosities from a past age, but also practical horses for modern times. Let’s diversify interest by involving engaging young people, inspiring a whole new generation to become involved, while maintaining the highest standards of showing and breeding. My background is in science and technology and education, and I have past experience as a trustee of membership organisations.
