## THE COULTHURST TRUST

The Coulthurst Trust is operated within the terms of the original 1947 charitable settlement established by Mr John W. Coulthurst of Gargrave, near Skipton. A capital sum was invested to allow income from capital to be distributed from time to time in practice, twice annually to registered charities, chosen by the trustees, primarily local charitable projects. Charitable donations are grants without condition.

The trust does not advertise for applications. Applications should be addressed to the trustees at the correspondence address and forwarded by post, not by email and should not exceed two A4 pages. Only in rare cases will applications be considered from charities beyond a twenty-mile radius from Skipton, North Yorkshire.

The Trust currently has four trustees. Further trustees are appointed by existing trustees as required. The trustees review the charity’s situation regularly and meet every six months. The trustees’ main concerns relating to the management of the trust relate to investment income. The trustees can monitor the general use of charitable funds through personal contact with local charitable projects, or publications by larger charities.

Minutes of the trustees’ meetings are available for the last six years. The trust itself has no employees and the trustees act voluntarily. The administration and day to day accounting is dealt with by the trustees. Accurate records are kept and available. Invoicing for this service occurs usually once each year.

Amongst its assets the Coulthurst Trust has two properties; a local football/cricket ground which is leased to the local community for recreation at a nominal rent. It also owns a remote property near Kettlewell in the Yorkshire Dales used and managed by the Scouts, providing accommodation for recreational and educational visits benefiting several hundred children annually. This has recently been comprehensively upgraded, the cost of which was met by the Trust. Both properties are insured by the Coulthurst Trust.

The trust’s income arises from a broad investment portfolio. Capital is reinvested, although the trustees have the option to use capital as they see fit. The trust employs Gore Brown Investment Managers of Harrogate as investment advisors and managers, Income received is net of charges and accounted for upon receipt.

The Coulthurst Trust is a small charity and it is highly unlikely the trust income will reach the level that requires an audit. The trustees intend to continue to operate within the terms of the 1947 settlement, and are currently considering a merger with a similar charity in the Craven area.
