## **RSPCA Folkestone & District Annual Report 2020**

**RSPCA Folkestone & District Branch c/o Magee Gammon, Henwood House, Henwood, Ashford TN24 8DH Charity Number: 209580**

## **01**

**January 02 The seal on the right has been one of our biggest rescue involvements to date with regards media coverage. Although unsuccessful in restraining and capturing the seal for treatment, the positive impact from the local members of the public towards the rescue and our branch has been extraordinary. We even received a £1,000 donation in January after someone saw the great work that the Folkestone branch had been doing.**

**We launched this campaign to promote free of charge microchips to all pets with owners in February receipt of benefits at our Havelock Clinic. We have the poster to the left up at the clinic Launched 'Chips By The Sea' Campaign and have been spreading the word through social media. The aim is to encourage all animals to be microchipped to reduce lost/stolen pets ending up in kennels as well as reducing veterinary costs to the branch for injured 'strays'. We would have liked to have organised pop-up events in the Summer to encourage further microchipping as well as offering a 'chip scan & update' service for owners with pets that are already microchipped. Unfortunately, Covid 19 meant we were unable 03to host events and our Havelock Clinic had to temporarily close.**

## **March**

## **Generation Kind**

**In the previous year, our Animal Welfare Officer, Lucy, had done lots of great school work. This time, before Covid restrictions hit, she was invited to assist area colleague, Emma, with her first secondary school assembly for a careers day. Lucy was also involved with an interactive day at St. Mary's Primary School, talking about everything to do with foxes. In addition, we managed to attend a nursery to talk to the children about the five welfare needs for kindness to animals and showing them the RSPCA van and equipment. From March, new social distancing rules meant Lucy was only able to attend emergency call outs or call outs that did not involve public interaction i.e. wildlife calls.**

**05**

## **Impact to our Animal Welfare Officer's role due to Covid 19**

**Lucy has had to ensure she is protecting herself with the correct PPE at all times and regularly sanitising. During lockdowns she has had to limit her interaction with the public by only entering houses in emergency situations. When restrictions have eased, any entering property has still been kept minimal where possible, with full PPE and the occupier is requested to wear a face mask during interaction too. At times, the role has been more challenging with regards to attending veterinary practices, due to them having fewer staff at times and having to have consultations outside.**

**Networking has been harder and, of course, we have not been able to arrange planned events such as microchipping stands in town and fundraising. As many of the shops that have our donation tins have been closed, this has caused a reduction in donations for the branch.**

**06**

**May Leo**

**Leo here was collected in a trap in Seabrook after a local resident was concerned about a large bald patch and a potential wound.**

**He was taken to a vets for a sedation where the wound was inspected and appeared to look like an old clipper cut. We also discovered at this point that he was not microchipped or neutered. Leo was boarded locally in the hope of an owner being found through social media and websites. Unchipped cats are usually given seven days to be claimed but on this occasion we decided to give Leo's owner an extra week to be found. Geo was about to be sent for rehoming at Canterbury after two weeks of boarding when his owner finally came forward after spotting him on our repost on Facebook the day before. Patience pays off!**

## **June**

**Fledgling season is well and truly upon us! Out of the 85 calls we received in June, 46 were for bird rescues. Just over half the calls received for birds were for gulls totalling 24 in June alone. A small number of these had unfortunately been injured but the majority of the call outs were for fallen fledglings. This month also saw four trips to RSPCA centre, Mallydams-Hastings, with one trip comprising 20 birds being transported for rehabilitation and care.**

**July Lucy was called out to this handsome fox after he was noticed out during the day and very disorientated in a member of the public's garden. Inspector Tina kindly offered to assist with this. However, Lucy was able to carry out her first fox capture successfully alone. He was unfortunately diagnosed with suspected poisoning and had lost his sight, so euthanasia was decided by Burnham House Vets.**

## **August Meet Ash**

**We collected Ash from Folkestone after a member of the public reported him as a stray with a "bad" eye. His eye had ulcerated and was clearly near eruption. He was taken to Burnham House Vets where emergency surgery for enucleation was decided before waiting for an owner to come forward on welfare grounds. With the help from our volunteer, Amy, we were able to set up a fundraiser on Facebook to help with the costs for Ash's surgery. After a long journey with us, Ash has finally found his new forever home.**

## **September**

**Bob**

**We received a very unusual call out regarding a stray tortoise found in Sellindge. Bob seemed to be in good health but somehow had lost his way and found himself walking down a country lane.**

**He was taken to Burnham House Vets where luckily his owner came forward within 24 hours and they were reunited. As you may be able to see from the photo, he was so big that he had to be transported in a dog crate!**

**11**

## **Smudge was found after a garage fire in Folkestone and was suspected to be pregnant.**

**We took her to Burnham House Vets where they scanned her and discovered that she was not actually pregnant. Unfortunately she had not been microchipped either so we were not able to locate the owners. After advertising her adoption on social media platforms, Smudge secured herself a new home that she went to in December and settled in really well.**

## **November**

**Litter Campaign.**

**Trustee Linda created powerful posters to advertise how dangerous and damaging litter can be to animals. The posters state that the RSPCA receives 5,000 calls a year regarding animals hurt by litter and promotes how easy it is to protect animals from harmful rubbish by taking your litter home. The campaign reached 8,370 people on social media! 358 Likes 36 Shares 12**

## **Poppy Wreath**

**Chairman Nicholas and Welfare Officer Lucy attended the Remembrance Sunday Service at the War Memorial on The Leas in Folkestone. They laid a wreath on behalf of our branch to remember and show respect for those fallen in war. Our wreath read "In Remembrance of all & of those with hoof, wing & paw who serve mankind in war". Both commented that it felt an honour to be able to pay respects on behalf of the branch.**

## **December**

**A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to our Trustee Martin's write up which featured in Hythe Life Magazine this month. This feature has already had a positive impact with a few members of the public stopping and speaking to our Welfare Officer saying how much they enjoyed reading about the work we do!**

## **Hythe Life Magazine**

## **Trustees and Volunteers**

**In January 2020 we held the Volunteer Recruitment Drive at the Radnor Arms in Folkestone where we had over 28 people sign up to be involved in volunteering at our Branch.**

**As a result of this event, Amy and Olivia have become Trustees and are acting as Treasurer and Social Media Contact in 2021 respectively**

**Nominated Trustees 2020 Nicholas Robbins, Jenni Kimpton, Martin Whybrow, Linda Hicks, Jane Makin, James Evans, Jeff Hicks, Jane Robbins, Pam Ninham, Charles Evans, Clare Mcgill, Amy France & Olivia Treadwell. Volunteers include: Anne Wariner, André Knuchel-Takano, Katarina Kamasova.**

**Financial Review The Branch Secretary will provide a full copy of his report and valuation at the AGM. Magee Gammon have drafted the Independent Examiner’s Report for 2020, which will be considered for approval by the Trustees. A copy of the Report is available on request. The Trustees estimate that they may need to arrange funds from the Stock Market Investment in August 2021 in the event of receiving no funding from the National Society throughout 2020/2021. This will be reviewed by the Finance Committee on an ongoing basis. Reserves Policy- reserves are needed to bridge the gap between 16 the spending and receiving of resources and to cover unplanned emergencies and other expenditure. The trustees are fully aware of the current economic background with Covid-19, this will provide a challenging environment in the year to come.**
