Background and objectives

The object of the charity is to support and further all or any of the charitable activities carried out in accordance with the principles and teachings of the Church of England in the area of benefit and in particular, those relating to:

Until 2014, 6 Crown Street was a property run for the purposes of the Temperence Movement. In July 2014 this property was sold and the proceeds placed in an Endowment Fund.

The fund is managed by four volunteer trustees, appointed by the Vicar of St Mary’s Church, Harrow-on-the-Hill.

Chair’s Report

2024 was a year of transition for the charity. We had a change of trustees with the resignation of Judith Shepherd (November 2024) and the subsequent delayed appointment of a new trustee as St Mary’s church navigated an interregnum. Both matters have now been very successfully concluded but that is for next year’s report. During 2024 we saw a reduction in our funding support mainly caused by the delayed conclusion of previously funded programmes and some exciting developments with one of our key partners, Firm Foundation. With the promise of our future support they were able to secure a long-term lease on a vacant church building which will enable them to deliver a much broader range of services particularly to support service users with alcohol and substance misuse issues. The preparatory works to prepare the building were funded from separate capital programmes and there was a resultant reduction in funding support by us for this period but it had put us in partnership with them in a much stronger position going forward. The trustees after extensive conversations have adopted a strategy which we have called “make a real dierence” and after a lull during 2024 we anticipate ramping up our funding support across a broader range of programmes in Harrow. Going forward in the short term we anticipate this will result in our funding support exceeding the earnings on our invested funds. Our initial support for programmes through the Young Harrow Foundation in 2023 proved to be very

successful and we have engaged in detailed conversations with them to continue that programme of work.

(long overdue). To date this has been largely through giving talks as part of the Sunday service at St Mary’s and taking a stall at various church events. This has had a very positive and motivational impact and we anticipate continuing this eort and building on it to raise further funding.

In summary an unexpectedly quiet year on the funding front as a result of external factors but some strong foundations and clear future direction set in place.

Impact of our projects in 2024

My Yard (£11,667)

We have continued our support of the critical work My Yard deliver on the Grange Farm estate where drug problems are endemic and many vulnerable families are at risk. One of our key priorities has been to support the children in this environment who are frequently at risk of exclusion from mainstream schooling.

Ignite (£9,311)

Ignite’s work is exclusively targeted to young people at risk from “county lines” gangs and drug related crime and violence. We are seeing some encouraging signs of reduction in knife crime and drug use. For many of the young people our support of the boxing clubs is their first exposure to male role models and the discipline that the training requires of them. The police have seen the direct community benefit and are very supportive of the work Ignite undertakes.

Alcoholics Anonymous (£5,915)

We indirectly support this group through underwriting the rental cost of their weekly room hire. We have been long term partners in this eort which has proved very eective in helping alcoholics to break their dependency and return to more normal life. The positive impact on both the individuals and their families underlines the importance of this long-term program.

Financial report

The full value of our investment funds is held within the CCLA’s COIF Charities Ethical Investment Fund. In 2024 the value improved by over £28k. No investment units were sold during 2024. Our dividend income was nearly all distributed to the portfolio of projects, with the exception of just over £3k. We continue to work with the CCLA to ensure that our funds are invested to obtain the best possible returns. While the value of investments can go up or down, the Trustees are comfortable with maintaining a value that does not fall below £700k.
