## **THE ANGLO-ARGENTINE SOCIETY** 

The Anglo-Argentine Society was founded in London in 1948 by the first Viscount Davidson, G.C.V.O., C.H., C.B., P.C.  The Society is non-political, and in 1961 the Society became a Registered Charity (No. 208002). 

The purpose and objectives of the Society are: 

- a) To advance the education of the people of Great Britain about Argentina, and of Argentina about Great Britain, about their respective people, history, language, institutions and culture, and their intellectual, artistic and economic life. 

- b) With those ends in view to organise tours, lectures, film shows, art exhibitions and similar functions, and to give advice and assistance in all matters relating to such education, including where appropriate the making of educational grants to students. 

- c) To further other purposes that are charitable under the law of England and Wales for the benefit of people in Argentina, by the provision of financial and other assistance to charities in Argentina or elsewhere. 

Note: The above objectives of the Society are as per the revised Statutes of the Society, as passed at the Extraordinary General Meeting on Friday 6[th ] June 2003.

## **MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRWOMAN** 

Dear Members, 

Another year passed and I am still here, due to exceptional circumstances.  Please join me to thank the Embassy of Argentina in the UK and Ambassador Mariana Plaza, our Honorary President, for the continued support of our charity in the many ways they do. 

I must admit my fourth year as Chairwoman was very rewarding and busy with traditional and new events.  Among the latter, a fantastic paid art course in three sessions (February, March, April 2025), which I am proposing to do again. Art in Argentina, was offered by art historian and artist Fernando Guibert and the feedback of attendants was excellent. 

Since our last AGM our committee experienced changes. We welcomed Christian Fernandez Perotti & Paul Pritchard into our Executive Committee and Tony Robinson joined the Committee again becoming our Treasurer, which is great news.  Paul oversees payments and financial advice. Together with our bookkeeper we have a strong team. 

It is an absolute pleasure to have committed, knowledgeable and hands-on people in this Committee also integrated by Clorrie Yeomans, our amazing Hon. Secretary and social media wizard, together with Lucía Sarmiento.  They all bring much needed energy and fresh air. We also count with Federico Cincotta as vice-chairman and Mario Mansilla.  A total of 8 members of which 7 are trustees. 

I reiterate our Committee is always open to new members and volunteers to help also with the operative aspect of our hybrid positions. 

The best news this year must be the Gran Asado Argentino. With 300 guests, the fabulous help of Bernardo Neville and Santiago Miranda from Chango Empanadas who led the Asado’s cooking (9 volunteer asadores) plus 8 volunteers to serve, and the many stands who contributed to the success of the event, buying places for their products.  We made a profit! 

Essential to this financial success was the collaboration with WASPS FC to share the cost of the problematic marquee, accommodating our events dates in sequence (Saturday 28/06 evening and Sunday 29/06 daytime) to pay one only marquee hire.  It wasn’t easy in terms of logistics, cleaning, etc but it worked.  So, maybe this is the way forward. 

Special thanks to Marcio da Silva, owner of Steamond Travel who generously donated 2 flights to Argentina with LATAM, as our main raffle prize.  It is great to have this back and a big attraction to sell the raffle. 

It is valid to recognise that the visibility we achieved in the last years and the big exercise in public relations, made the AAS more present and relevant.  So, thanks to all who volunteered every day and/or at specific events or tasks to make things happen.  We need your ideas and contacts to reach more potential collaborators. 

Last September, to start our financial year, we had the Gala Dinner in collaboration with APARU, which was profitable again, and we must thank Viñals Wine and Food and Casa Argentina for their sponsorship (all wines donated and cash sponsorship respectively). 

This was followed by an excellent Borges Lecture with Professor Benjamin Bollig (University of Oxford) who accepted to become an Honorary Member of our Society.  We also had a fantastic Christmas Recital and Party with an online raffle. 

The AAS also celebrated the 100 years of the William Henry Hudson Memorial (Hyde Park), with a talk by Hudson’s biographer.  Many members also attended the Argentine Club Polo Cup final and lunch at Ham, invited by our friends at the Canning Club. 

In social media, we have now almost 3000 followers on Instagram, with almost 40,000 views for one of our reels. Please follow us if you haven’t done it yet.  Facebook has 1822 followers.  We offer there a lot of information and we started to do successful Give Aways on Instagram as collaborations with other institutions and to bring new options that benefit our Members and friends and makes us visible. 

This year we didn’t charge for events at the Official Residence as per the Embassy’s request.  We shifted to ask for voluntary donations in exchange for a raffle, which does not cover our costs.  Despite using our capital to finance these events I am happy to report we still made money to close the year.

It is interesting to see how many of our events generated new memberships, which are needed to keep us strong and healthy. 

We are working now on reviewing our old statutes to bring them up to the demands of the digital era, make them more inclusive and bring them closer to those of similar institutions.  Slowly, we are finding our way to rescue ill-stored AAS archives to preserve them for the future as their historic value is of great interest.  This will be a long-term project if plausible. 

We are working in a new initiative of a Music Group made of members of the AAS to encourage the playing and appreciation of Argentine music. 

A new bank account to invest money has been opened at CCLA (details in the Treasurers’ message) following your suggestions at the last AGM. 

As nobody was willing to take my place at the end of my fourth year, I have been requested to stay one more year, which brings back the need to revise the statutes. 

Once again, many thanks to you, to the Committee, the volunteers, donors, sponsors and supporters, to our colleagues at APARU, BACC, Canning House, service providers and all those who share our events and support us. 

This is your society, and it is an honour to represent you and act on behalf of the AAS.

## **Our chosen charities** 

Pleased to inform we finally could donate the promised money to Enseña X Argentina (£1500) and Asociación Civil Cuerpo y Alma (£1500).  It was very difficult to transfer money in 2023 and 2024 due to bank problems.  We received their emails of gratitude. 

Our new designated charities chosen in September 10th 2024 for the period 2025-2026 are Red Comunidades Rurales and Haciendo Camino.  We still need to agree the amount we can donate to them before 2025 ends. I encourage you to look for their websites and social media to see their work. 

Because of our more visible work we received new requests from ONGs in Argentina to be considered candidates for our help. 

## **Management/Admin** 

We spend money in three services that cannot be taken by volunteers, to preserve continuity and stability. These are: IT, bookkeeping and communications management via Mailchimp and platforms such as Eventbrite (tickets) or Rally Up (raffles online).  We thank Antonio Trenado, María Durá-Albert and Chloe Lerigo. They do a lot for the AAS and many times their advice is essential. 

## **Recommendations into the future** 

Continue to develop relationships with potential sponsors, keep communications frequent and dynamic across all platforms and be creative when proposing events.  Revise and update statutes, save our archives, publish a new book with the latest Borges Lectures to complete the series. Find corporate members who could support specific events or projects, beyond our flagship events. 

Create a structured Open Call for charities to apply as candidates. 

Continue to nurture the relations with other institutions. 

Enthuse young people into the very rewarding volunteering journey and make more members. 

## **Committee Operations** 

The Committee meets once a month, generally on Zoom, in person when possible. We have a dynamic chat on WhatsApp and we use a shared place with our new Google Workplace to work collectively and store documents, easier to follow up. 

Many decisions are voted in a digital way using the tools the Committee finds appropriate and practical. Christian created for us a common space for work through a free for charities workspace by Google, he also generated new and free email addresses for everyone in the Committee. We are slowly implementing these and new tools which will make our work more dynamic. We are looking into CRM too.

## **STATEMENT OF THE COMMITTEE’S RESPONSIBILITIES** 

The members of the Committee, as trustees, are required under the Charities Act 1993 to prepare accounts for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the Charity’s financial activities during the year and of its financial position at the end of the year.  In preparing accounts giving a true and fair view, the Committee should follow best practice and: 

- select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently 

- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent 

- state whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements 

- prepare the accounts on a going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the Charity will continue in operation 

The Committee Members are responsible for keeping accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy the financial position of the Charity and which enable them to ascertain the financial position of the Charity and ensure that the accounts comply with applicable law and regulations.   They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

## **MESSAGE FROM THE TREASURER** 

A successful Gran Asado makes a huge impact upon our financial results and this year’s event was a success! 

The net income in this financial year to 31 August 2025 was £3,046 a considerable improvement on last year’s deficit of £8,217. 

Our membership fee income is marginally up on last year.  We are very grateful to all our fee-paying members to show their support to our purpose and objectives.  Our management and administration expenditure has increased during the year by £518 to £15,341. It has been many years since we had a part time paid secretary/manager and office so now we have to rely on outside help with many of the administration tasks, including bookkeeping, website management and event coordination and ticket management – we are extremely grateful for this help as we cannot run our events solely with volunteers despite their mammoth efforts, particularly by our Chairwoman. 

The Gran Asado held at Wasps FC’s ground in Acton on 29th June was a most enjoyable day (almost too hot!) and we were able to share the cost of the marquee with the rugby club which saved over £6,000. The increased prizes for the raffle, including 2 tickets to Buenos Aires provided by Steamond Travel, also contributed.  We are very grateful for the many helpers and volunteers for their contribution in making the day run smoothly. 

The message from our Chairwoman gives details of the events held throughout the year which have contributed to the enjoyment and learning for our members.  We are very grateful to all our speakers and leaders for their support. 

I am extremely grateful for my predecessors for helping me back into this role since my retirement on 2010. Transferring roles and authorisations is a lengthy and time-consuming process despite the internet’s claims to speeding up transactions; their approval and authorisations still require physical signatures to many documents for verification.  It is very time consuming!  Paul Prichard has been a great help in the transition period and in agreeing to continue as participating in many of the Treasurer’s functions and helping to develop financial policies and procedures to ensure the proper management and use of funds and to summarise procedures governing the financial activities of our Society. 

We are heavily indebted to the Argentina Embassy for all their support and contributions during the year, particularly for allowing us to use the Ambassador’s Residence for most of our events.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE COMMITTEE OF THE ANGLO ARGENTINE SOCIETY** 

I report on the accounts of the Society for the year ended 31[st] August 2025, which are set out on pages 8-13. 

## **Respective responsibilities of committee members and examiner** 

The Charity’s Committee Members are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act). 

I report in respect of my examination of the Society’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act.  In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act. 

## **Independent examiner’s statement** 

I have completed my examination and confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination, giving me cause to believe that in any material respect; 

1. Accounting records were not kept in respect of the Society as required by sec 130 of the 2011 Act; or 

2. The accounts do not accord with those records; or 

3. The accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2009 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination. 

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS**

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES** 

## **Basis of preparation of financial statements:** 

The financial statements are prepared under the historical cost convention and include the results of the Charity’s operations, which are described separately in the Committee’s Report and all of which are continuing. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice for charity accounts.  The Charity has taken advantage of the exemption in Financial Reporting Standard No. 1 from the requirements to produce a cash flow statement on the grounds that it qualifies as a small charity. 

## **Fixed Assets:** 

Tangible fixed assets for use by the charity are stated at cost less depreciation.   Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to write off each asset over its expected useful life in five equal annual instalments. 

## **Income:** 

## **Life Members** 

Members’ subscriptions are accounted for as received by the Charity and credited to income in four equal annual instalments. 

## **Ordinary & Corporate Members** 

Members’ subscriptions are accounted for as received by the Charity, except for those received in advance which are carried forward to the following year. 

## **Donations & gifts** 

Voluntary income and donations are accounted for as received by the Charity. 

## **Fund-raising events** 

The income from fund-raising ventures incurred in inducing people and organizations to contribute financially to the Charity’s work is shown gross, with any associated costs included in fund-raising costs. 

## **Management & Administration expenditure** 

Expenditure on management and administration of the Charity includes all expenditure not directly related to the charitable activity or fund-raising events. No remuneration was paid to Committee members in the year, but expenses were reimbursed and included as part of costs. 

## **Value Added Tax** 

VAT is not recoverable by the charity, and as such is included in the relevant costs in the financial statements.

## **LEYENDO ARGENTINA BOOK CLUB – 9[th] year** 

The “Leyendo Argentina” Spanish Book Club reached its 9[th] year in May! 

This Club has been essential for promoting the Argentine culture and preserving our Spanish language.  And also many of our Members first got in touch due to this initiative. 

Leyendo Argentina meets every 4-6 weeks, either via Zoom or in person, at the Embassy or at the Ambassador’s Residence. 

The Club has been coordinated by our long-time member and founder Alicia Alborja de Mellino & Paula Fiorini.  Many thanks to our Coordinators for keeping us updated and for challenging us with each book.  Thanks for the respect, empathy you have created along these years. 

They also participated of the London Spanish Book Fair Talk “When Books Create Community”, held at Conway Hall. 

From September 2024 to August 2025 the group discussed the following books:
