Members are hereby advised that the 76th AGM of The Anglo-Argentine Society will be held at the Argentine Embassy 65 Brook St, London W1K 4AH on Monday 27th November 2023 at 6.00 pm for the following purposes:

## **THE ANGLO-ARGENTINE SOCIETY**
The Anglo-Argentine Society was founded in London in 1948 by the first Viscount Davidson, G.C.V.O., C.H., C.B., P.C. The Society is non-political, and in 1961 the Society became a Registered Charity (No. 208002).
The purpose and objectives of the Society are:
- a) To advance the education of the people of Great Britain about Argentina, and of Argentina about Great Britain, about their respective people, history, language, institutions and culture, and their intellectual, artistic and economic life.
- b) With those ends in view to organise tours, lectures, film shows, art exhibitions and similar functions, and to give advice and assistance in all matters relating to such education, including where appropriate the making of educational grants to students.
- c) To further other purposes that are charitable under the law of England and Wales for the benefit of people in Argentina, by the provision of financial and other assistance to charities in Argentina or elsewhere.
Note: The above objectives of the Society are as per the revised Statutes of the Society, as passed at the Extraordinary General Meeting on Friday 6[th ] June 2003.

## **MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRWOMAN**
Thank you to our Honorary President HE Ambassador Javier Figueroa and Minister Alessandra Viggiano Marra, for supporting our Charity as we fulfil our mission to strengthen the understanding and friendship between the people of the UK and Argentina; promote Argentine culture in the UK and fundraise for our designated charities in Argentina. Both have been very generous allowing the use of the Ambassador’s Residence for our events, and an office at the Embassy, which hosts us since 2016.
2023 has marked the AAS’s 75th Anniversary and, despite many challenges, we hope we did enough to celebrate it. You may have noticed new logos and banners.
I would also like to thank the Executive Committee for their support. We are working in adding new committee members who can bring new energy, ideas and different perspectives. For different reasons some members of the committee left. The invitation to join the committee is still open to members. This is both a position in which you will need to give some of your time as a volunteer, and as a trustee of the board in financial terms, later. The committee meets once a month (not every two months as the statutes suggest) and we have a dynamic chat on WhatsApp.
I would like to thank our Vice-chair Federico Cincotta for his legal advice and common sense when needed and Federico Yáñez for his business point of view and projections for our events. Trying to balance them being selfsustainable yet encouraging them if they help the AAS reach our members expectations is always a challenge. After all events help visibility. Thanks to Christopher Ecclestone for his contributions so far and new events ideas like his proposed “Mateada in the Park”, which we’ll try to implement.
Thanks also to Vanesa Patrignani Castillo, who we vote today as trustee. She has been wonderful at helping with social media, her vision was very much needed. (There is a separate report on SoMe). As I still part-manage the social media, I wanted to point out that since I took over Instagram in 2018 with just 100 followers, today we have more than 1600. Our combined outreach goes well over 5 thousand people.
Special thanks need to go to our Honorary Treasurer Mario Mansilla for his dedication along these two years. Mario sailed magnificently the transition to digitise our accounts, supported by María Durá-Albert, who in turn was essential to help us reorganise everything on Xero.
For personal reasons, Mario Mansilla decided to resign as Treasurer from 1 January 2024. He needs to focus on his family and personal affairs which will take him back to Buenos Aires for a long period of time. Mario will be available to oversee the transition to a new treasurer and will keep making payments until names have been changed in the banks’ mandates. We will miss Mario as Treasurer, and hope he continues being a member of our Committee and a trustee. On the other hand, the Committee asked Federico Yáñez to replace Mario in this position of great responsibility, again, with the support of Ms Durá-Albert in bookkeeping.
We continue to use the services of Chloe Lerigo (Scragg) from Executive Support Consultants, for many operations: ticketing, Mailchimp communications, online raffles and some expert advice on establishing clear roles for each member of the Committee, something we still haven’t perfected. We also hired Antonio Trenado to help with website maintenance and updating, IT, etc. We pay all three assistants per hours.
With the cost-of-living crisis and the new phenomenon of inflation in the UK, this year wasn’t easy. Both clearly affected the AAS, you will see a financial loss on our Asado, even though we had a great time.
This financial year which started in September 2022, saw back the Borges Lecture, with Argentina’s National Literature Prize 1995, Dr Héctor Dante Cincotta, talking about Borges’ first book of poems, Fervor de Buenos Aires. In November 2022, we had a successful presentation of the book PUMAS, A History of Argentine Rugby, by author and member Rex Gowar. In December, our Concert by Julieta Iglesias and Christmas Party was sold out and enjoyed by everyone present and a fabulous raffle sold online and on site, had a varied set of prizes. We thank all our generous donors.
The Christmas Milonga had the presence of Argentine bandoneonista Rodolfo Mederos. 2023 had more milongas in February and March.

Regrettably the Ambassador’s Gala Dinner we organised with APARU for May, had to be postponed until September. This was due to train strikes affecting attendance, hence fundraising, and also the numbers of the financial year in focus. Time was lost too. Its final profit in September (£6900 in total divided between APARU and the AAS) is part of next financial year.
Our monthly Book Club Leyendo Argentina made 7 years in May 2023, and we had a celebratory meeting to discuss Hernan Ronsino’s “Glaxo”, at the Ambassador’s Residence. Their meetings take place mainly on zoom and we read Argentine Contemporary Literature from 1983 onwards. Many thanks to coordinators Alicia Alborja and Paula Fiorini. More than 65 books have been read since 2016.
This year’s Gran Asado in June was members only. 140 people attended and a new asador, Bernardo Neville from Chango Empanadas, helped us (at no cost) and also donated empanadas. Yet the entire exercise, with the current model, is extremely expensive (more than £22K if we aim to serve 500 people); and if we don’t have sponsors to pay for marquees, and club at least, we can’t do it without incurring in losses. I ask you all to think who can help sponsor our Asado 2024. For instance, Steamond Travel could not offer the traditional British Airways tickets as first raffle prize.
In July we brought 40 members of the AAS to the Argentine Club Polo Cup Final at Ham Polo Club in Richmond. A benefit exclusive to our members.
Ended the summer, all our efforts were put in preparing the postponed Ambassador’s Gala Dinner and the rest of the year’s events.
As I warned in my last year report, we had to scale down the number of events if we didn’t have more volunteers in the Committee. We didn’t have a Borges Lecture as a result.
On a personal note, I work long hours for the AAS with no pay, at times in detriment of my own job and family. This is why I would like to thank my family for supporting me while I finish my tenure. Organising events , coordinating management of daily tasks, answering emails, and keeping and broadening the Charity’s public profile and relations are demanding tasks and require lots of personal investment.
## Programa Puentes
The AAS has successfully worked with the Embassy of Argentina’s Cultural Attaché, Alessandra Viggiano, and cultural strategist Camila Charask, on the implementation of the Bridges Programme which frames the curatorial residency (6-8 weeks) for one Argentine Art practitioner at the prestigious Delfina Foundation in London. We are transiting our third year, and have just selected the winner for January 2024, after 26 applications through an Open Call, instead of the previous nominations. The art world in Argentina is looking at us now.
In 2023 the second winner was Andrei Fernández, and after her residency, we saw materialised the success of this programme aiming to increase the presence of Argentine visual arts in the UK, when Andrei was invited to curate an exhibition at the Cecilia Brunson Projects during September. To finance this residency, we organise with producer Luciano Brizzi the Milongas at the Ambassador’s Residence, which attract up to 200 people each and many of them are joining the AAS.
Our relationship with other institutions such as APARU, ABCC in Argentina, Canning Club, Ham Polo Club, BSMI, and Canning House is being nurtured, and where and when possible, this Committee’s aim is to strengthen an ecosystem of support with them and others. British Spanish Society supports our events on a regular basis, we try to reciprocate. We have special discounts for Cervantes Theatre too. The same goes for all the businesses related to Argentina which so generously support us along the year. We try to engage with them, and we are grateful for their help.
As the two years support for our designated charities in Argentina reach an end, the Committee decided to extend our financial help to them for one more year (2024). Enseñá por Argentina (Reimaginar el Aula programme), and Asociación Cuerpo y Alma, will receive £1000 each, corresponding to this 2022-2023 year.
The reason for the proposed extension is simple. We are not enough people to distribute tasks and comply with the minimum due diligences to choose two new charities. We hope we can work on creating a better model (open call or others) to choose new ones in 2025.

On a different note, our website, despite not being perfect, contains a platform called MemberPress which helps us create memberships and charge for subscriptions, and automatically renews them year after year, unless the member decides to stop it. We have seen an increase in members, and plenty of renewals between May and August, which gives us a lot of hope. This system has taken a big burden off our volunteer shoulders, in times when it is very difficult to find help for free. After a year, we can say that MemberPress is worth it, and each member oversees their own account.
I repeat last year’s message about our Statutes: this Charity is desperately in need of new, revised, modern statutes. We need help to achieve this, a special committee, maybe.
I would like to finish on a high note, it has been a source of pride to know that fellow societies are looking at us in admiration for what we do, the visibility we achieved, and the number of successful events we offer. Some of them have asked for advice on modernisation, on how we did it. I have answered them to the best of my abilities. We do have problems to solve, but we can be proud of this year because it’s the result of all the efforts put by everyone who partakes in the AAS. We just need to enter the next phase with clear objectives to ensure we still are relevant.
This is your Society. Get involved. Bring your ideas and help us find sponsors to set our beloved events and new ones.

## **STATEMENT OF THE COMMITTEE’S RESPONSIBILITIES**
The members of the Committee, as trustees, are required under the Charities Act 1993 to prepare accounts for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the Charity’s financial activities during the year and of its financial position at the end of the year. In preparing accounts giving a true and fair view, the Committee should follow best practice and:
- select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently
- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent
- state whether applicable accounting standards and statements of recommended practice have been followed, subject to any departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements
- prepare the accounts on a going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the Charity will continue in operation

## **MESSAGE FROM THE TREASURER**
Annual membership fees have been kept invariable for the last five years. We expect to moderately raise them in the next year as we are struggling with cost increases of our events hence the difficulty to make events profitable.
Our new web, inaugurated early last year, is running smoothly and we find most of our members are getting used to it, renewing memberships, making new ones and buying tickets for the events. However, we are flexible to accept other forms of payments for subscriptions like bank transfer and direct debit for those members who find it difficult to do it through the web.
Digitalization of the accounts with XERO system that was started last year has improved our admin efficiency contributing to save time and effort in all our procedures.
Money in banks at 31/8/23 show healthy balances: Virgin Money £ 21,769 & Lloyds £ 29,545. We have recently managed to negotiate a 1.11 % annual interest for the funds held in Lloyds Bank.
Our main event the Gran Asado made a £3,770.51 loss unfortunately, as it was only opened to members. This decision had to be taken to exclude non-members as it was not possible to find volunteer asadores with the experience and the skills for the usual large number of previous years. Fixed costs affected by inflation without the usual income had a negative impact.
The other big event the Gala Dinner organized as usual between Aparu and AAS had to be moved from March to September. It reported a net profit of £ 3,567.41 for AAS and the same amount for Aparu. As it took place on 29th September, after closure of this year it needs to be reported next year.
Other events were the Borges Lecture Sep 2022 (loss £224.69), the Christmas Party (profit £900.56) and the Pumas Book (profit £457.82).
Our main charity work this year for the second time was the joint effort with Argentine Embassy and Delfina Foundation, to support a scholarship for a curatorial residency for one argentine art practitioner. £ 8,000 were paid to Delfina Foundation, money raised through several tango events organized at the Ambassador Residence.
As promised we also paid last February £1,000 to "Ensena por Argentina" and also £1,000 to "Cuerpo y Alma", our chosen charities.
Again, thanks are due to the Argentine Ambassador, Sr Javier Figueroa, for the Embassy's ongoing support to the Society and, in particular, for office space and storage of our bulky asado equipment all at no cost.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT** TO THE COMMITTEE OF THE ANGLO ARGENTINE SOCIETY
I report on the accounts of the Society for the year ended 31[st] August 2023, which are set out on pages 9-15.
## **Respective responsibilities of committee members and examiner**
The Charity’s Committee Members are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act).
I report in respect of my examination of the Society’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.
## **Independent examiner’s statement**
I have completed my examination and confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination, giving me cause to believe that in any material respect;
1. Accounting records were not kept in respect of the Society as required by sec 130 of the 2011 Act; or
2. The accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. The accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2009 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**
## **Basis of preparation of financial statements:**
The financial statements are prepared under the historical cost convention and include the results of the Charity’s operations, which are described separately in the Committee’s Report and all of which are continuing. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice for charity accounts. The Charity has taken advantage of the exemption in Financial Reporting Standard No. 1 from the requirements to produce a cash flow statement on the grounds that it qualifies as a small charity.
## **Fixed Assets:**
Tangible fixed assets for use by the charity are stated at cost less depreciation. Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to write off each asset over its expected useful life in five equal annual instalments.
## **Income:**
## **Life Members**
Members’ subscriptions are accounted for as received by the Charity and credited to income in four equal annual instalments.
## **Ordinary & Corporate Members**
Members’ subscriptions are accounted for as received by the Charity, except for those received in advance which are carried forward to the following year.
## **Donations & gifts**
Voluntary income and donations are accounted for as received by the Charity.
## **Fund-raising events**
The income from fund-raising ventures incurred in inducing people and organizations to contribute financially to the Charity’s work is shown gross, with any associated costs included in fund-raising costs.
## **Management & Administration expenditure**
Expenditure on management and administration of the Charity includes all expenditure not directly related to the charitable activity or fund-raising events. No remuneration was paid to Committee members in the year, but expenses were reimbursed and included as part of costs.
## **Value Added Tax**
VAT is not recoverable by the charity, and as such is included in the relevant costs in the financial statements.

## 8. **COMPENSATION MONEYS HELD**
This relates to moneys received in consideration for vacating the premises at Belgrave Square, but which were held in a dedicated bank account by The Hispanic and Luso Brazilian Council (“Canning House”) until February 2021 when they were released to the Anglo-Argentine Society. These moneys have now been deposited in one of the Society’s current accounts, ring fenced as a Designated Fund. See note 12.

- Tuesday 27th September 2022: Borges Lecture. Dr Héctor Dante Cincotta. “The City, Passion, Destiny”. Borges’ poems from Fervor de Buenos Aires & Poema Conjetural. Ambassador’s Residence.
- Milongas 2022, Ambassador’s Residence: Sundays October 2nd; November 6th; December 11th (with Rodolfo Mederos, bandoneonista & composer).
- Thursday 3rd October 2022: Book presentation “PUMAS, A History of Argentine Rugby”, by Rex Gowar, Ambassador’s Residence.
- Monday 28th November 2022: AGM, Embassy of Argentina.
- Thursday 1st December 2022: AAS Great Christmas Concert and Party with Julieta Iglesias, pianist. Raffle.
