THE ANGLO-ARGENTINE SOCIETY

The Anglo-Argentine Society was founded in London in 1948 by the first Viscount Davidson, G.C.V.O., C.H., C.B., P.C. The Society is non-political, and in 1961 the Society became a Registered Charity (No. 208002).

The purpose and objectives of the Society are:

a) To advance the education of the people of Great Britain about Argentina, and of Argentina about Great Britain, about their respective people, history, language, institutions and culture, and their intellectual, artistic and economic life.

b) With those ends in view to organise tours, lectures, film shows, art exhibitions and similar functions, and to give advice and assistance in all matters relating to such education, including where appropriate the making of educational grants to students.

c) To further other purposes that are charitable under the law of England and Wales for the benefit of people in Argentina, by the provision of financial and other assistance to charities in Argentina or elsewhere.

Note: The above objectives of the Society are as per the revised Statutes of the Society, as passed at the Extraordinary General Meeting on Friday 6[th ] June 2003.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRWOMAN – 2021-2022

Thank you to our Honorary President HE Ambassador Javier Figueroa and Minister Alessandra Viggiano Marra, for their support for the Society as we fulfil our mission to strengthen the friendship between Britain and Argentina, the two countries and cultures we represent.

Both have been very generous offering the Ambassador’s Residence and the Embassy which hosts us, and many events since our Christmas party 2021, until today.

Thanks to the executive committee, which is very small due to the lack of volunteers who put themselves forward. You may have noticed we still haven’t appointed an Honorary Secretary.

If you think that you or someone you know could join us to occupy this role, please let us know.

We all have working commitments every day and families, so none of us can bring this important role on board on top of our responsibilities as committee members. We meet now once a month and are in constant communication.

I’d like to thank our Vice-chair Federico Cincotta for his legal advice for contracts and agreements, our treasurer Mario Mansilla for undertaking the mammoth task of digitizing our accounts with the help of Maria Durá-Albert, hired for this exercise.

To Liz Merchant whose advise, and ideas are second to none, also helping with communications, online raffles and managing the design and printing of our brand-new leaflets with QR codes.

Thanks to Federico Yáñez for advising from a very wise business point of view, creating financial projections, and making us comply to strict budgets and the concept of self-sustainability of our events.

To Christopher Ecclestone who always points out pros and cons, to better the quality of our offer.

Thanks to Cecilia Lipovsek for taking over everything connected to our Mailchimp emails, Eventbrite account and website maintenance. Currently, she is working in a rehosting to make it a faster experience. Regrettably our web developers stopped trading, so we needed to look for alternatives.

This has been a highly demanding year of events and technological TRANSITION. The exec. committee held my back and kept my spirit up, while I got used to this new position, which is an honour and a big responsibility.

I am grateful for their patience, the way they listen to my, sometimes, crazy ideas and the way they help making them come true. Also, thanks to Julie Whitworth and Derek Gibson for being available while adjusting to the job.

We hired María Durá-Albert to help with book-keeping and digitizing which Mario will explain, and Chloe (Scragg) now Lerigo, from Executive Support Consultants for other projects. Chloe started as an AAS member offering some hours for free for our charity, until we realized, she could help us project manage events like the Gran Asado Argentino, and before that, helping me with the website content, plus a myriad of other little jobs, to ease the burden of not having a paid administrative assistant. More than once without charging us.

Since I took over, a year ago, we delivered a successful Concert and Christmas party, an art talk on zoom, we brought forward our Ambassador’s Gala Dinner to March, to help APARU, we held an in person talk about conservationist WH Hudson, the Gran Asado was back for 480 people and the fabulous prize of two British Airways flights donated by our loyal friend Marcio da Silva from Steamond Travel. We invited donors to the viewing of Maradona’s shirt before being auctioned by Sothebys; had a day at Ham Polo Club thanks to our corporate member Canning Club; plus, the return in person of our famous Borges Lecture in September with Dr Hector Dante Cincotta.

It is important to me to nurture and develop our relations with the fellow clubs and companies who can support our work, which I do with events and social media.

The committee decided that all events needed to be ticketed to fundraise for our two charities in Argentina: Enseñá x Argentina, and Asociación Cuerpo y Alma, but also to keep the AAS financially healthy. We reached unanimous decision on donating to them once a year, after our accounts have been finished, if there are profits and keeping some money for our own charity. We do not pay rent, but we still need to save money for a rainy day.

Today, I am pleased to announce that we will give this year £1,000 pounds to each charity.

Yet, our subscriptions will need to be raised next year, also events’ tickets, since we can’t avoid the rising costs of life.

Last year, I said I wanted to start a scholarship to help an Argentine subject to fulfil an academic opportunity in the UK. That chance came about after a conversation with Cultural Attaché Alessandra Viggiano. We both had similar ideals and joined forces to fund a curatorial residence at the prestigious Delfina Foundation for one Argentine art practitioner. The process of selection is intensive, with circa 30 Argentine and international nominators proposing more than 50 nominees, a preselection of over 23 is done by Delfina Foundation, and a shortlist of 6-8 candidates go through zoom interviews to choose one beneficiary.

Javier Villa was the first beneficiary and did his residency between August and September 2022. The idea is that what they acquired here will have an impact back in Argentina and generate a more affluent art exchange between both countries. All this is done within the frame research of the Bridges Programme, designed by cultural strategist Camila Charask.

If fits perfectly with both our educational goals and promotion of Argentine culture and friendship, and it has generated a new ecosystem of support that could blossom in many positive ways.

You can see the video of Javier Villa’s experience in our website, the Embassy’s, and Delfina’s websites plus all our social media outlets, of course crediting the AAS, and making us visible at national and international levels.

As I still manage the social media, I wanted to point out that since I took over Instagram in 2018 with just 100 followers, today we have more than 1200. People request to join our Linked In network, and followers on Facebook keep rising.

Because of social media we have attracted a younger group of new members, a base which we desperately need to grow and cater for if we want to survive the test of time.

We need to be attentive to what tickles their fancy, while keeping our traditions, innovating our ways of being visible, and communicate our activities and achievements in their language and channels.

It is important to note that the demographic composition of our membership has been slowly

changing too.

Now we are working on a scheme of sponsorships for next year, to increase our income, and we will need advice and your contact books.

This charity urgently needs to revise and renew its statutes, and we need a team or committee which can quickly come up with a better option. We will convene in January if you are interested.

Despite all the progress, the truth is, if we don’t get more people to help us, and as the culture of free volunteering is visibly in decline, we will have to scale down our activities and with that, the money we make.

Finally, and this touches me personally, after this year it is evident that the AAS (a small category of charity as it makes between £10 k and £100 k a year), can’t continue being managed without financial retribution to the number of hours officers dedicate to it, or without administrative help. We are now demanded by the charity commission to be a lot more professional. This is not anymore, a labour of love or a club-like society to remind us of good times in Argentina.

The AAS has an incredible potential to achieve great things as a relevant actor in soft diplomacy for our countries, and to help those in need in Argentina.

That is why we need to investigate grants to finance paid staff or administrative assistance, including the role of the chairperson. The AAS is now beyond the badge of honour /volunteer stage. We have modernised it and made it a bit more professional.

Nobody today will accept to dedicate so many hours every day of the week and weekends, to fill this position unless they are very rich and don’t have family responsibilities. It really is a big ask, yes very rewarding, but a full time job.

Your ideas are welcome. This is your society, and it needs you. Especially when 2023 is our 75[th] anniversary which deserves a big celebration.

STATEMENT OF THE COMMITTEE’S RESPONSIBILITIES

The members of the committee, as trustees, are required under the Charities Act 1993 to prepare accounts for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the charity’s financial activities during the year and of its financial position at the end of the year. In preparing accounts giving a true and fair view, the committee should follow best practice and:

TREASURER’S REPORT

After two difficult years due to Covid, we are pleased to see AAS flourishing again on every aspect, including Finances.

Annual Membership fees were kept invariable for the last four years. However, we had an income increase from subs of 46% from last year, due not only to new members but also to updating subs from members who had subs in arrear

Two important investments were made for AAS, benefits of which have already been evident since implementation: a) the new WEB and b) the digitalization of the accounts.

a) Although we are flexible with members who want to continue paying subs by direct debit or bank transfer, most of them replied positively to payment through web creating an individual account for members, thus facilitating every kind of payment, subscriptions, or events, reducing administrative and secretarial burden.

b) The digitalization of the accounts was much needed, not only in anticipation of what might soon be a legal requirement, but also because of the volume of transactions that soared due to more events than usual this year.

Our main charity work this year was a joint (private-public) effort with the Argentine Embassy and Delfina Foundation, to support a scholarship for a curatorial residence for one Argentine art practitioner, MAMBA curator Javier Villa (almost £7,000), money raised through several tango events organized at the Ambassador's Residence.

Although not all our events had the expected profit, our Net Surplus for Year 21/22 was

£5,236 which represents a 41% increase over last year £3,707.

Our Net Assets went up consequently from £59,738 last year, to £64,974 for year 2021/22, representing a healthy 8,76 % increase.

Again, thanks are due to the Argentine Ambassador, Sr Javier Figueroa, for the Embassy's ongoing support of the Society and, in particular, for office space and storage for our bulky asado equipment, all at no cost. Tony Robinson continues to compile and file our Gift Aid tax reclaim which leads to a reliable and prompt boost to our funds and is very much appreciated.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE COMMITTEE OF THE ANGLO ARGENTINE SOCIETY

I report on the accounts of the Society for the year ended 31[st] August 2022, which are set out on pages 10-15.

Respective responsibilities of committee members and examiner

The Charity’s Committee Members are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act).

I report in respect of my examination of the Society’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiner’s statement

I have completed my examination and confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination, giving me cause to believe that in any material respect;

  1. Accounting records were not kept in respect of the Society as required by sec 130 of the 2011 Act; or

  2. The accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. The accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2009 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of preparation of financial statements:

The financial statements are prepared under the historical cost convention and include the results of the Charity’s operations, which are described separately in the Committee’s Report and all of which are continuing. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Statement of Recommended Practice for charity accounts. The Charity has taken advantage of the exemption in Financial Reporting Standard No. 1 from the requirements to produce a cash flow statement on the grounds that it qualifies as a small charity.

Fixed Assets:

Tangible fixed assets for use by the charity are stated at cost less depreciation. Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to write off each asset over its expected useful life in five equal annual instalments.

Income:

Life Members

Members’ subscriptions are accounted for as received by the Charity and credited to income in four equal annual instalments.

Ordinary & Corporate Members

Members’ subscriptions are accounted for as received by the Charity, except for those received in advance which are carried forward to the following year.

Donations & gifts

Voluntary income and donations are accounted for as received by the Charity.

Fund-raising events

The income from fund-raising ventures incurred in inducing people and organizations to contribute financially to the Charity’s work is shown gross, with any associated costs included in fund-raising costs.

Management & Administration expenditure

Expenditure on management and administration of the Charity includes all expenditure not directly related to the charitable activity or fund-raising events. No remuneration was paid to Committee members in the year, but expenses were reimbursed and included as part of costs.

Value Added Tax

VAT is not recoverable by the charity, and as such is included in the relevant costs in the financial statements.
