## **Chair’s Report**

Dear Member

I would like to thank all of our supporters, whether through the cattery, the shop or those that attend events. The legacies and donations enable the branch to continue to help animals in need, including caring for and rehoming cats, supporting dogs of the homeless with food and veterinary fees, and helping struggling owners of much loved pets with veterinary care.

I would also like to thank my fellow Trustees for all of their dedication and hard work over the past 12 months, also for their support and belief in working towards the implementation of our strategy and how we collectively wish to take the branch forward to improve on animal welfare within our area.

Our Branch Manager, Marie Ashton has worked tirelessly in bringing a digital transformation to the way we work, which has led to efficiencies in how we operate, this has resulted in being able to take in and rehome more cats than ever before.

2024 was a very busy year, helping more animals than in previous years. We have managed this with the support of local veterinary practices, for which we thank them.

The staff and volunteers across the cattery and shop have worked hard to ensure we care for as many animals as possible and I would like to thank them for their hard work, support, commitment, and enthusiasm during a period of change.

I would also like to thank Sarah Piggott, Senior Branch Partnership Manager who has offered continuous and welcome support to the branch throughout a period of change.

Individual reports from our various activities are contained further into the report, which I hope you will find an inspirational read. We look forward to your continued support over the coming year.

Karen Packham, Chair

## **Branch Report**

2024 was a busy year for the branch, with a lot of positive changes being implemented, which improved our ways of working as well as our outcomes significantly.

## **Cattery Report**

The cattery and team of animal care assistants (ACAs) were ready for an update to their working practices. Working with our neighbouring branches and regional Partnership Manager we learnt what systems were in place and working for other RSPCA branches, and implemented an upgrade to the systems at Bluebell Ridge. The Bluebell Ridge team were connected to the rest of the RSPCA with a plethora of support and advice, as well as connecting to and visiting our neighbouring branches to learn from their good practice.

These included the implementation of the following:

- An upgrade to the broadband.

- Google Drive for storing and sharing documents and files

- RSPCA email accounts for each member of the team

- A dedicated email address for adoptions and general enquiries

- Implementation of Animal Shelter Manager, for the storing of animal records, as well as supporters and volunteers.

- The branch was connected to the RSPCA resources such as The Link, The Branch Digital Space, and the RSPCA Comms website and the team were connected to The Hive training system.

- The details for the branch were updated on the national RSPCA website, ensuring the details were correct and up to date.

- Our cats were advertised on the RSPCA Find a Pet website

- One of our ACAs became the lead for adoptions

- Advertising for the branch was improved on social media, with the team implementing the new RSPCA brand on social media as well as our website.

- An electronic HR system was introduced, to record personal files, annual leave, rotas, as well as one-to-ones, review meetings and appraisals for the team.

**Charity Number 206314**

Alongside these changes to our systems, ways of working and culture, I ensured we met our RSPCA licensing requirements by taking more cats from our local inspectors, plus also taking advantage of the funding available from the national society in taking cats off the animals logistics list.

All of these changes were embraced by our team of ACAs, and had a huge impact on our intake and rehoming figures. Some of these changes meant a shift in culture and thinking for the team; by focusing on working with our local RSPCA Inspectors as a priority, instead of taking animals from our local community.

There were a few bumps in the road, including an outbreak of flu in the cattery last summer. However the impact of the changes on how we operate as a branch were significant. Not only did we increase our rehoming figures, we also significantly reduced the amount of our overspend, reducing this amount by over £100,000.

- In 2024 we saw 236 cats come into the branch, with 201 being rehomed.

- We increased our team of volunteers for the cattery and charity shop.

- Health and Safety for the branch and charity shop was reviewed and updated.

- The branch held events again for the first time since Covid, hosting two successful events in June as part of the national RSPCA event One Fun Day and December for a Christmas event.

I am very much looking forward to the branch continuing to improve, develop and expand its work and remit both with the RSPCA and in the local community in 2025.

## **Charity Shop Report**

Our charity shop in Bexhill remains the face of the branch in our local community. The branch thanks all of the staff and volunteers who run our charity shop in Bexhill, without the support of the volunteers the charity shop could not operate and we very much appreciate the dedication of the staff and volunteers at the charity shop.

Improvements to our Charity shop in Bexhill were also made; to the overall layout, updating shop displays and shelving, as well as organising the store-room with shelving for donations, storage bins for donations and rag, as well as arranging waste and recycling collections.

The branch received a lot of support from the local charity The Men’s Shed and would like to thank them for their assistance with shelving in the shop.

The shop managers visited other RSPCA charity shops to gain some fresh ideas in running the shop.

Health and Safety improvements have been made to the fire exit, electrics, and overall H&S procedures, the team were First Aid trained, staff and volunteers also completed H&S training.

All sales are now recorded through the Zettle card reader system, including cash sales, to avoid the need to record individual sales by writing them down.

Pet food donations were collected regularly from the shop, regular shop audits were carried out, the staff team and volunteer team completed H&S training.

Unfortunately the takings for the charity shop reduced from £61,025.14 in 2023 to £57,026.75 in 2024, a £3,998.39 difference in takings. Staff costs increased to £34,747.63. With overheads overall increasing to £55,592.46. Therefore the shop made very little profit for the branch in 2024. Improvements are currently being made to the management of stock to improve this for the branch.

## **Vet Welfare Funding and Dog Food Bank**

The Branch continued to receive donations of cat and dog food in the charity shop as well as a donation bin in ASDA supermarket. Thousands of tins of dog food, and cat food pouches, as well as dry pet food is donated to the branch each year. The majority of the cat food received is used in the cattery by the team of Animal Care Assistants, with the rest going to food banks and local homelessness charities; Warming up the Homeless and Surviving the Streets.

The Branch continues to fund a vet welfare scheme, where members of the public contact the branch for support in paying vet bills. These are often emergency calls. The branch has limited funds to cover this, but covers up to £75 of the costs for each pet owner.

In 2024 the branch assisted 49 pet owners with vet treatments, ranging from neutering to more urgent care such as ear infections and X-rays and other investigations. The branch funded over £3,000 for vet care for cats and dogs in our local community.

Demand for assistance with vet care is increasing in the branch area, therefore applying for funds to cover these costs through the South East Regional Board is planned.

The branch also trialled a neutering programme for the local community, which received a lot of demand, this was expanded with SERB funds at the beginning of 2025. The Branch is very grateful for SERB funding as neutering is essential in preventing unwanted cats and kittens in our local community.

None of this would be possible without the continued support from the local community, for which we are very grateful. This support can be provided in many ways, as well as donating food it is possible to make one off financial donations, or to donate by regular bank standing order.

We continue to rely on this support to enable us to help the much loved animals who are so deserving of it.

## **The Sussex Team Chief Inspector Patrick S. Hamby**

It gives me great pleasure to present to you the annual report for the Sussex Inspectorate for 2024.

Another challenging year with the effects of the cost of living crisis, scope of service, the issue with avian flu which has seemed to recently reared its ugly head. Mallydams Wildlife Hospital has started to open up for seabirds, but due to the rise of avian flu cases has had to close down, but they are still taking mammals on a limited basis which is positive going into 2025. We continue to utilise Folly Wildlife near Tunbridge Wells, Brent lodge near Chichester and of course local vets in the area. Due to the nature of avian flu, we continue to be very careful when collecting wild birds that they do not have the disease to protect other wildlife and if they show signs of avian flu we are forced to put them to sleep.

The cost of living crisis still is ever so present in the area. The food banks are continually being used and we have brought more pet food to pet owners in the area who have fallen on difficult times. We have been able to utilise various funds from branches and the Regional Inspectorate Welfare Fund. This has been able to help many people over the years which has been greatly appreciated by most we have helped. But the main thing it has helped the lives of the pets they had and improved their lives as well as the owners.

We have also said good bye to Inspector Kate Barnes who has now taken a position in Dorset and Wiltshire Team, ARO, Julie Parsons who has taken a position in the Devon and Cornwall Team and Inspector Becky Carter who has joined World Horse Welfare Charity which was her dream job. We wish them all the best in their new adventure.

The Animal Rescue Officers are still a work in progress. We have 13 volunteers who are assisting us. We are continuing to work on being able to utilise the volunteers more by asking the branches in Sussex if they need cats transferred to vets or moved to other animal homes to let us know and we can see if we can use

7

## **Charity Number 206314**

the volunteers in that capacity as well. But if anyone thinks of something they could use them for such as animal food donations, or dropping off animal food from the food bank let us know and maybe they can help.

I wish to thank the East Sussex and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service for the many occasions that they have helped with rescues of animals that have got themselves trapped or in difficulty and we have needed their equipment and manpower to resolve the situation.

Of course we have not forgotten the RSPCA animal centres that take in our animals, care for them and eventually rehome them. Our sincere thanks to the Branch catteries and kennels that board, care for and rehome our animals, usually at very short notice and at the most inconvenient times, and to the experts who care for our sick and injured wildlife until they have been rehabilitated and are able to be released back into the wild.

I would also like to thank the Regional Board and all the Local Branches for having the trust and confidence in field officers in developing the Inspectorate Welfare Fund for the region. This has been a brilliant tool for officers to really help those who need that bit of support in difficult times. There have been so many incidents where we were able to help senior citizens get their animal to the vet and assist if not pay for the treatment especially in these hard times. The appreciation for our help brings home the reason why we do what we do. I also wish to say a special thanks to the Eastbourne branch Committee who have promoted animal welfare in the Eastbourne, Hailsham, and Lewes area for more years than they wish to mention. Now they have been merged with Brighton Branch and can now enjoy their well deserved retirement.

We are not the only charity that goes to great effort for the benefit of animal welfare and I wish to acknowledge other organisations that provide us with invaluable assistance. Thank you to Folly Wildlife for their excellent work for the welfare of wildlife, WADARS (Worthing and District Animals Rescue Services) for assisting us on numerous occasions going to rescues when we could not get there fast enough and Brent Lodge Wildlife Hospital in the Chichester area. We also work very closely with Sara Smith and Claire Gordon of World Horse Welfare to improve the welfare of equines in the area.

8

**Charity Number 206314**

Our highly-skilled intelligence teams also need a mention, who use state of the art technology to trace some of the miscreants who mistakenly think that by running off to other parts of the country they can escape the consequences of their cruel or neglectful actions.

Finally, on behalf of everyone in the Sussex group, a big thank you to all of the Sussex Branches members and volunteers for making us feel so welcome at your meetings and for all the difficult and invaluable work you have done throughout 2024. Without you dedicating your time and efforts we would not be able to achieve all that we do.

To give you a taste of what we do, here are just a few of the things that we dealt with in the past year that you may find interesting.

## **The Year of the Rescues**

## **Creature comforts :**

ARO Stevens dealt with a little vixen who appeared to have been enjoying her time with us a little too much. The young fox had spent a few days in our care due to being poorly. However when released she wanted to stay and go back to the cage in which she had just been released. ARO Stevens gently coaxed her and with some encouragement she realised where she was and ran back to her den.Well done Marie!

## **Charity Number 206314**

## **Great Swan Rescue:**

Officers had their work cut out when they attended an urgent call about some oiled swans in the Southampton Quay. Officers from the Sussex group were in attendance and the rescue was a great success. The oiled birds were cleaned at West Hatch and once were healthy and fit again, they were released back to the wild.Great effort by all involved.

## **A Deer Rescue!**

A group of cyclists had a shock when they were out for a ride in Whatlington, East Sussex when they found a young fawn stuck in a fence. They managed to safely rescue the young deer from the fencing but it was exhausted and weak so ARO Thomas attended and transferred it to RSPCA Mallydams Wood. The fawn then spent some time on a drip till it was feeling a lot better before being transferred to Folly Wildlife. Great effort from all involved.

Thank you all for your continued support!! **Patrick S. Hamby 407 Chief Inspector Sussex**
