Recruitment and appointment of new trustees

Trustees are recruited and appointed by the existing trustees.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Objectives and aims

Long Ashton Parochial Charity

In May 1881 the charities of William Moryce, Sir John Smyth, Mrs Hester Fenn, Maria Bower, Mrs Mary Smyth, The Dowager Lady Smyth, George Whiting, Peter Maze and Elizabeth Coulton were consolidated, administered and managed by the trustees under the title of the 'Long Ashton Parochial Charity'.

In 2005 the Charity Commission confirmed that all 9 charities are to be used for the maintenance of the Long Ashton Almshouses - numbers 13,15,17,19,21,23,25 and 27 Long Ashton Road.

Lady Smyth's Almshouses

This charity is for the upkeep and maintenance of the Almshouses as listed above.

Francis Derrick Educational Charity

Income from the land owned by the charity is given to Birdwell School and Northleaze School in equal parts. The trustees sold a strip of land to Sustrans, the sum invested and the interest received given to the schools annually.

Chorley's Charitable Trust

A fund was set up in 2005 with the intention that the capital is to be invested in interest bearing deposits at the discretion of the Long Ashton Charity Trustees.

The interest is to be distributed for the upkeep of the Fabric of All Saints Church, Long Ashton, possibly at five yearly intervals after a quinquennial inspection of the Church. Whether or not the payment is made towards any particular repair is to be solely at the discretion of the Trustees of this Charity.

The Trustees have given due regard to the guidance published by the Charity Commission on Public Benefits.

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE

In 2023 there were no resident changes.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

Reserves

The level of reserves is kept under review by the trustees during the year and at each year end to ensure there are sufficient funds to meet unexpected expenditure. At the year end there was an overall surplus of £1,287 for the year (2022: £23,299) with £235,725 held in cash assets (2022: £234,438) and a market value of £335,907 held in M & G shares (2022: £317,182).

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2023 which are set out on pages 4 to 6.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of Accounting

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities Act 2011.

The financial statements are drawn up on the Receipts and Payments basis of accounting. All donations and other income are therefore accounted for when received. All expenditure is accounted for when paid.

Fund accounting

Lady Smyth's Almshouses have a common purpose as agreed with the Charity Commission.

2. TRUSTEES' EXPENSES AND RENUMERATION

There were no trustees' renumeration or other benefits for the year ended 31 December 2023 nor for the year ended 31 December 2022.
