The objects of the Soclery shall be:
a) The edltSng and publication OK origlnal documents and other materlal relatlng to the hlstory of
the anclent Counry of Northampton.
b] The stimulation of interest In the hlstory ofthe anclent County of Northampton by the arranging
from time to time lertures at varlous p13ce5 within the County and by other means,
c) The malntenance of a library and its furnishings for the beneh't of Members ofthe Soclety.
d) The care of manuscrlpts. books, paintings. artefacts and other objects which may be glven or
lent lo the Soclety from tlme to tlme.
GOVERNANCE
Appolntment ofTrustee5
The Charity Commission considers those involved with the management of the Trust (S.e, thc Council) to
be trustees. Under the Rules of the Soclety, Council member5 are elected each year. The Trustee body
aims to achleve an appropriate mlx of academic, financial and admlnlstratlve expertise In IL8
membership.
Governing instruments
The original Trust Deed of the Society setting out the objectives of the Society and appolnt5ng the
original Custodian Trustees Is dated 10 December 1920. The proceeding5 of the Soclety are governed
by a set of Rules drawn up under thts Trust Deed. These Rules have been amended from tlme to tlme,
most recently on 8th lune 2024.
PUBLIC BENEFIT
The trnstees are cognlsant of thelr obllEation to provide public beneflL In 20Z5 the Society maintained
its longstanding record of brlnglng new edltions of original historic documents and material to a wider
audience with the publication of new volumes. The year also marked the 350th anniversary of the Great
Fire of NorthaTtEpton and In addition to a special edition ol Northamptonshire Past and Present devoted
to the subjert the Society 3150 contributed lunds towards a special exhibition at the County Archivcs
which marked the occasion, and the Society participated in a symposium held oll 4th july at the
University of Northampton.

The Society has continued its popular progrdmme of W0￿$hop5 designed to introduce participants to
original historic documents, and to explain the context in which they were produced and what they can
rell us. These take place in the Sociery's Library and are organised in conjuncrion wtth the County
Archive5, In order to secure access to the Archives for the number of parttcipants involved it has proved
necessary to introduce a modest charge from mid 2025 to cover the costs charged to the Society. We are
delighted that the workshop programme won 'Be5t Projectr in the 2025 Northamptonshire Heritage
Forum awdrds.
A considerable amount ol material (rom the SocIet￿s past publications and other sources of relevance
to the history of the County has been made freely available on the website which has continued to grow
in pupularity since its relaunch. The usual progrdmme of lectures has also been successfvl and in 2025
the Sodety started to hold them in d ransie of locatinn5 lu improve acLe5s ￿ iho%e living across the
County. By these means the reach of the SocieWs actlvitles has Increased sub5t2nti3lly in recent year&
The Soclety has maintained contsct with West Northamptonshire Council concerning their futhre plans
for the ludge's LOd￿ng5 and the Sessions House where many of the Societys historic porrraits are hun

trustees who have resigned. and to Rosemary Eady in partlcular. a stalwart on the Council from 1972
who made a slgnlficant contribution to the work ot the Society in countless Myys.
The Trustees were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Rlchard Pe5tell, past Chairman (2015-22]
and of Lord Boswell of Aynho. our President Since 2015, during the course of the year. Tributes will
appear in the 2026 edition of Northamptonshire Past andPresenL

The Councll agreed to absorb the work of the Library Committee into the Finance and General Purposes

Governance
The Council met twl¢e durlng the course of 2025, and Its committees were able to meet In person or by
znom. Deborah Hayter remained Chair of the Councll. There were no new elections onto the Councll
during the course of the year, although Professor Matthew McComacK Dr Kelth Brooker, Mrs l.P.T. Eady
and Crispin Powell reslgned.
Thi)ugh not a Trustee, Ms Phoebe Frost has participated in cornmittee rneering& bringtn8 a welcome
perspective on behalf of younger member& The Council has actively sought new members to Tefvesh its
range of skills and looks forward to welcoming them from the 2026 AGM. ArranRements are aIso being
made tor the recrulmient ofa new President following the death of Lord Boswell.
During 2025 the Council agreed Dew polldes on Reserves. ￿egUardIn& Complalnts Handllng, Social
Medla, Grant Makin& Lone stsff and Volunteers and Prlvacy.
Chan8es In the Offlce
Graham lampard resigned as General Secrefary in September Z025, and the Council thanks him for hls
servlce to the Society. Mr5 Shirley Wong was appointsd as Flnance Officer Dn 8th January 2025.
replacing Kate Millin. Following rhe departure of Dr. lampard Mrs Wong also arted as General Secretary
untll the end ot 2025. The Council undertook a review of the Job Description5 and established a new
role combining the duties of General Secretary and Finance Officer and Mrs Wong was ap￿}nted to that
position from the be￿nn)ng of 2026.

Finance report
The Finance & General Purposes Committee established in October 2019, replacing the Finance &
Investments Commtttee. This Committee inCor￿rateS the Terms of Reference of the Finance &
Investments Committee and is also authorised to exercise any lunetion of the Council not falling within
the remit of any other committee; and any ￿nCtion of the Society that requires a decision before the
next norTnal meeting of the Council. This now includes the remit of the former Library Comvnittee. All
such decisions Must be reported to the next scheduled meeting of the Council. The Council is currently
revtewing all of its governance structures with a view to simplification and redudng duplication.
At the 2025 AGM the Society appointed Brenda Peers-Ross. fonnally of CVS which had previously
provided the Society with that service, as the Independeni Examiner. Christine Andrews, also forrnerly
of CVS, has Provided payroll servfice&
Ai thc end 012025 the Society remains in a secure financial position over311 which leaves it well placed
to deal with any changes in circumsLinces which might arise in the short to medium term, In common
wlth 2024 the year has seen .some Impurtant investments in digitisation ol material lor the new webslte
and Improvements to the Soclety'5 offices whlch support their more intenslve use for workbhops. These
have enabled a significant increase In our actlvitles and opportunltles for engagement available for
members. detailed elsewhere in this report.
For the first tlme In several years the Soclety has also employed two paid staff members (albeit both
part time), though followlng the departure of Dr Graham Lampard that has now been reduced to one.
Nevertheless the day to day operating cn5ts of the Society, for IT .gupporL 4taffin8 and postaKe
Parricularly, have increased, and CUTrently exceed our reEular Income. The Council ha5 identified areas
where cusls will be examined lo identsfy putential savings, including revlewing IT expendlture and
maklng more mater121 awdilable to members digltally (with iheir agreement) in order to reduce postage
costs.
Mcmbershlp subscrlptions were not Increased In 2025, but the changes to subscriptions agreed to keep
Pace with inflatlon at the 2024 AGM came into effect over the course of the year. The Soclety continues
to encourage member5 to subscribe by Direct Deblt using 'Go Cardless. which ¢onslderably reduces
admlnlsirative costs.
The Socletyagreed a Re%ervcs Poliry in 2025 wliich aims to fund its programme ofpublications and day
to day runninR costs from the income from its investmenis and from sub5crlptions. It will maintaln
sufficient flexibillry In reserves whlch are accesslble in the short term to fund day to day running costs
for 12 to Z4 months, including siaff salarles where appropriate. In order to allow sufficienf tiTne for
alternative arTangements to be made for the long term care and presenotlon of the contents uf the
library, and of the docuTnents, paintings and artefacts etc. for whlch the Soclery Is responslble. The
Society will maintsin sufficient reserYe5 which rnay in the meanwhile be invested ro fvnd rhe
anticipated costs of the luture programme of publications which shall agreed by the Publieations
Committee from time to time, in order to ensure that editorial work whith has been agreed and 15 in
preparation to fulfil the Society's puryK15es will eventually be published.
The Society's investment portfolio has grown: as of 31st December 2025. inve5trnents totalled £358,347
{E344,896). up £13.451 on the previou5 year. There was £45,3191£42,251] cash at bank Income from
subscriptions Increased to reflert the new rates agreL￿ at the 2024 AGM. Lower than usual expenditure
on publications reflerts the rimlng of the Societys volume5 being complLlted for printin& The Council
h3S agreed that funding should be flexlbly applled ro sUp￿rt the pipeline of publications as they are
completed. and the Honorary Generdl Editor has provided a forward programme to Inforni fLnanclal
planning.

Membershlp
During the course of 2025 the Societys membership decreased, frorn 417 in December 2024 to 400 in
December 2025. These were broken dovrn as follows:

There were 4 Honorary members. Over the course o( the year 7 new mernber5 lolned and 24 members
elther cancelled their membership or sadly died. A new promotional leaflet has been widely disrribured.
and at the end of 2025 a total of 96 member5 paid their annual subscriptions by Dlrect Debit (that figure
has now increased to 118].
Publlcadons report
Northamptonshire Past ondPresen¢ - Honorary Edltorfs Report Wendy Raybould
2025 saw the J50th annlversary of the Great Fire of Northampton and a special 155ue of
Northamptonshire Past and Present marked the occaslon wirh a collection of papers on that topic. Nine
authors contributed a wlde range of fascinaling perspectivcs on the vvent and a number of these al%0
spoke ai the Great Flre Symposium, jointly organised by the Soclety and the Unlverslty of Northampton
which was held at the UnivLrbity in july.
This was the final Issue of Ihe journal edited by Dr Wendy Raybould who has now retired from that
posltion. Nell Lyon has picked up the baton in an actiTyg capacity for 202& The Council is most grateful
to Dr Raybould for all her eft'Drts over the years.

In 2025, we publSshed The Enclosure of Northampton.Fhlre 1485.1901, whlch was Intended to be David
Hall's lasr volume. Unfortunately. David, who had been the Society's General Editor for tnany years, died
before it was completed. and I was privileged to be able to complete the work. whlch we belleve Is the
most detalled work on enclosure produced by any Record Society in En￿an(L
202.5-26 saw the publication of two volumes, The Rockin9ham Account Roll (ed. Sandra Raban), which
wlll probably be the penultlmate volume in thc Mellows Serles, and Democrotic Rodicals (ed.Tlm
Hughesj, in the Virtor H3t]ey Series.

Northamptonshire in the earty Nineteenth Century.. The Drawlngs of George Clrlrke of Scoldwell.
Thls was helng edlled by Bruce Balley and Rosemary Eady. and will now be completed by Nell Lyon and
the General Edltor. We would Ilke to thank Rosemary and Bruce for their work in making this volume
possible.
Mellows Trust Volume. The Peterbornugh Chronicle5 Vol l. (ed. Edmund King) This is likely to be
the last of the Mellows volumes to be printe(L We nArrently anticipate thls will be the Soclety's 2027
volume.
Memories of Northamptonshire 1868-1958 (ed. Neil Lyon). In September 1957 the IAJcal History
Commlltee ol the Northamptonshire Rural ComJDunity Council launched a competition acr055 ihe
Coiinty called Memories of o Villager., 109 submissions were rLceived. covering 86 of the Cuunly's
village& loan Wake, the n)ain judge for the competition, noted, 'the essays gwe a most remarkable

pictu￿ of the changes in Village life in the last 60-70 years all over the County,, This will be published in
2028. the platinum aDniversary of the collectiOEL
Other volumes
The Soclety currently has a proposed list ofpublications by year through to 2032. Including:
'GoJden in Wisdom Sllver In Eloquence. (ed. Davld l*plne)-- William Sponne was a Fifteenth-century
Archdeacon and Rector of Towcester. He founded 2 charity in Towcester. This work will look at Willlam
Sponne and his charity, drawing on archives from various repositories.
'Northampton before the Flre, (eL Steve H(Jlder). The final title for this volume is yet to be agreed. The
work will include much original data on the town. inLludTng that of the Courts of Common Pleas, the
King's Bench and Exchequer Pleas and ChantrylFraternity Certificate5.
'Criminals and the Luw in Northomptonshire. 1399-1422. (ed. Ted Powell).

l am pleased to report that b)rrowlng from the collection has Increased in recent months, probabty
prompted by the worlL8hop serles which has brought the Library to mernbers, atientlon. The Library's
modest book fund has been used io purch&se volumes on various aspocts of Northampton5hlre's history
35 well as a number of useful background works intended principally to be of help to those undertaking
research. Re-classlflcallon from Browne to Dewey is almost complete, All books on the County
generally have been re-classified and work on speciffic localltles has reached W,. Thc next project wlll
be to edit our lar8e number of background works to ensure that these are relew4nt to our members.
This may resulL in further volume8 belnR oftered for sale to our members or belng sent to auction, thus
producing a modest, bul welcome, Income.
In relation to a specific question the Commirtee agreed that In the cvcnt that thc flve General Pitt-Rivers
excavailon monologue books which had been donatcd to the Archaeologlcal Resources Centre, Chester
House, should be sold by them rhen the proceeds from any sale should be divided 50.50 with the NRS,
