The Gloucestershire Society

Trustees' report For the year ended 31 December 2021

Structure, governance and management

The Gloucestershire Society is an unincorporated Registered Charity, which is governed by its Trust Deed.

The charity is administered by its committee of trustee members, who are appointed in accordance with the Trust Deed. The committee holds at least two ordinary meetings each year to discuss key matters and ensure the smooth running of the charity.

Objectives and activities

The objectives of the charity is to provide relief from povety for people resident in the Gloucestershire area who are in need, in hardship or distress. The Trustees have had regard to the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit.

Summary of main achievements of the charity during the year

The Society this year continued to provide vital support to beneficiaries throughout Bristol and Gloucestershire, during a time when the pandemic accentuated the economic impact upon people living on the lowest incomes.

The Society had a successful appeal, with thanks, led by our president for 2021 Andrew Tabor. Funds of £123,938 were raised during the year and £100,939 of grants were paid out to those in need, ranging from between £50 and £250 each. A higher level of grant was set this year to enable the society to help those in even greater need during the pandemic.

As part of the funds raised, and following on from restricted donations received last year, the Society received additional restricted donations of £10,000 towards grants for IT equipment so that schools could make this equipment available to children from low income households, where they would not have otherwise had access to computer equipment at home. Tablets were provided to primary schools and laptops to secondary schools.

The trustees were also very grateful for further restricted donations of £20,000 towards the end of the year to be used for the continuing efforts of the charity to provide grants to those in need. These funds are being granted in early 2022.

The trustees are very grateful to all donors for their generosity during the year.

Reserves policy

The trustees aim to maintain unrestricted reserves at a level to meet approximately 9 months' normal expenditure levels. This is considered to provide sufficient funds to continue to provide grants to beneficaries in the event of a drop in income.

Financial review

The detailed receipts and payments accounts are included on page 3. As shown in the accounts, the principle sources of funds were donations received during the year. The key areas of expenditure included individual grants and administration costs.
