Brigf History
The Almshouses were crèated from the 1632 Will of William 8arring•r. He wa$ born Stevington and
had land in the village. He l*ft the residue of his estate for Yhe building and making of.... almshouses
for poor men. They were first built 1634. The first recordlng of the charity its&lf was in 1641, whtn
the Vicar of Slevington and others sought to ensure that the almshouses were run as inten¢Jed by
WlllSam Barringer and not for profrt of the executors ol his will. The defendants were ordered to hand
over the house and £400 to the ¢laimanl8, who in 1651 then used the money to buy land at Crowlands
In Pavenham to support the alm8houseJ8 and the poor people In them.
Both the almshouse8 and the land ¢onllnue to be benèfflelally owned by th& chorlty and athnlnistered
a8 originalty irslended. In 1836 the then Vicar of Stevington and others Created a more legal footing
and during the 19th Century variou8 deedg and agreements were created to administer the chaflty,
culminating in Ihe 1911 Deed still in existence today. In 1841 the almshouses were rebuilt, on their
original foundation5, keeping the original stone window mullions and the dormer windows, using the
exi$ts'ng materials where ever possible. Gradually during the latter half of the 20th century the
almshou8*8 have had kitchens and bathrooms added behind the old houses, and where possible
improved to improve the quallty of Ilfe for the beneficial residents.
