## **Trustee’s Report of the KMPS 2 nd November 2025**

This past year has provided two milestones in the Society’s history. Firstly, as I mentioned in my welcome, our landowner Molly Amery died at the beginning of October. I first met Molly, along with her husband Bill, in 1983 when an unlikely trio knocked on the Kelly Farm house door to discuss a possible future for the mine site. Molly and Bill were rightly wary of our approach but we talked on the doorstep for an hour or so and agreed to meet later in the year for further discussions. This time we were invited into the front parlour and we sat down to flesh out our plans to restore the mine site. These plans must have satisfied both Molly and Bill as we were allowed to start tidying up the site and to form a society subsequently going on to draw up a lease that was eventually signed in 1985. The Amery family encouraged us right from the start and as we progressed with the restoration took a keen interest in what we were doing. Molly was especially interested, visiting the mine regularly when we were working there and also keeping a close eye on any visitors who may have been looking at the site when we were not there. She attended most AGMs and always thanked us for what we were doing, occasionally making a few suggestions that were usually adopted

After Bill died Molly became the landlord and continued her interest in our progress. As the lease came up for its 12 yearly renewals she was always willing to agree to a continuation. I got the impression that she was happy with what we had achieved and that she was proud that “Her” mine was becoming well respected in local area and in the wider industrial history circles. She allowed us to use her field for parking visitors’ cars to the Society’s open days and looked forward to our appearances at the annual Lustleigh Show. She even organised a successful fund raiser in the old Lustleigh village hall.

In later years Molly moved into a smaller, more manageable cottage but still kept a keen interest in our progress. After a serious fire at the cottage she never really recovered and took up residence in a care home for some years. She seemed to be thriving there so it was a shock to hear that she was in Rowcroft Hospice where she sadly died.

Thank you Molly for all your encouragement, friendship and especially for believing that three TV employees would look after Kelly Mine for over forty years.

Our deepest condolences are extended to Justin and Charles and to Molly’s wider family.

The second milestone is that the Society is now registered with the Charities Commission as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. This means we are a legal entity and reduces the liability of the Trustees and

board of directors. It also has the advantage (speaking before the 2025 budget) that we can recover tax paid on membership fees and donations. A useful source of extra income.

That brings me neatly on to the position of Treasurer and Membership Secretary. As you will have been made aware Tony is retiring from the post after many years keeping us on the straight and narrow for which I thank him very much. So we will require a replacement. The finances have been kept on the right side with an annual excess of income over expenditure of £623. Membership has stayed stable as have donations so, considering the present bank balance, we do not need to advise an increase in subscriptions. Future maintenance costs are difficult to forecast so a continued careful overview of expenditure needs to be maintained.

During the past year routine and not so routine maintenance has been undertaken. The drying shed waterwheel bearers have been replaced and the launder to the dressing shed waterwheel has had a new bottom board fixed all of which has been treated to a coat of creosote. The grub hut door that has been showing its age has at last been replaced with a replica and will be painted once the treated wood has weathered. Various window sills have also been replaced but, as always, there is still more to do. The site generally has kept us busy keeping the undergrowth within reasonable bounds bearing in mind the wildlife that calls it home.

To end I would like to thank the committee for the work they do in keeping the Society running and to the members, for supporting the Society by being a member and to everybody who contributes to the weekly work parties. Kelly Mine would not be such a jewel in the crown of industrial history without any of them.

John Turner (Hon. Chairman)
