Trustees’ Report 2025

Buckfastleigh Bowling Club was founded in 1921 and was registered with the Charity Commission as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in November 2024. Consequently, this is our first annual report for the Commission and the audited accounts for the year ending 30th September 2025 are attached in the Treasurer’s Report.

As stated in our governing document the primary object of the Club is the promotion of community participation in healthy recreation in Buckfastleigh and the surrounding area in particular by the provision of facilities for the playing of flat green bowls. The Club shall be affiliated to Bowls England & Bowls Devon. It shall adopt and conform to Bowls England Rules & Regulations and the current Laws of the Sport of Bowls. The Club is committed to promoting a safe environment in which children and vulnerable adults can enjoy taking part in games of bowls.

The Trustees of the Club are: John Sims (Chairman); Tom Bowden; Andy Bowen; John Fox; Sue Heyes; Ann Pedrick and Deni Rudgley.

We organised a very successful Open Day at the beginning of the new season when people of all ages were encouraged to come along and have a go at the sport with the aid and encouragement of more experienced players. A large and varied group of people enjoyed the event, 13 of whom joined us as novice members over the following few weeks.

We provide support to people who wish to become members, particularly those who have never played the game before. For those new to the sport, we offer a reduced subscription and free coaching. All new members are encouraged to take part in friendly games both between our own members and against local and touring sides. During the 2025 season, in addition to our weekly Club evenings, we organised 20 friendly matches. We have also hosted 2 touring teams. The tourists are not only vital for our Club’s finances but touring teams also help the economy of the South West. We were also able to run a full complement of internal club competitions.

As their confidence, and skill increases, all members can participate in league matches of varying degrees of skill level and competitiveness. During 2025 we entered teams in the Riviera Mixed Triples League (organised specifically for developing players), the Men’s Over ‘55s’ League the Ladies South Devon Triples Challenge. We had a very successful season in the Riviera Mixed Triples League, winning our division (runners up last year) but losing out in the final to Kingsteignton.

At the end of the season, we had 40 members, an increase of 50% on the previous season, and we look forward to an excellent season in 2026.
