1) Organisational Structure
Malton White Star Band became a registered charity on 19 September 2024 and has a Management Committee of up to 12 trustees who meet on a monthly basis and are responsible for the strategic direction, policies and operation of the charity. At present the Committee has 7 trustees from a variety of professional backgrounds relevant to the work of the charity. The MD and Training Band MD also sit on the Committee to assist with their artistic, musical and band management expertise, but have no committee voting rights.
The constitution (governing document) of the charity is “Malton White Star Band 18-092024 - Association_CIO_model” and can be found on the charity website www.maltonwhitestarband.org.uk.
Trustees are appointed by members vote at AGM or can be appointed by charity trustees (a person so appointed by the charity trustees shall retire at the conclusion of the next annual general meeting). The governing document provides further information on how trustees are appointed to the charity and how they may be re-appointed.
Malton White Star Band is supported by a number of people who regularly volunteer, including our trustees and helpers at Training Band. Volunteers run a band room cleaning rota to avoid the need to pay for the services of a cleaning company.
Notably, the band is very fortunate to benefit from the services of Iain Fell (Musical Director) and Pat France (Training Band MD) who perform critical volunteering roles for the band.
The MD’s provide the musical guidance and artistic direction for the band including the program of music, musician development and mentoring, performance preparation, organising performance aspects of concerts and engagements and identify dep player requirements.
In addition, the Training Band MD is responsible for ensuring young peoples’ welfare during Training Band rehearsals and ensures Brass Bands England BandSafe rules for the BOPA child performance license are followed.
2) Induction and training for new trustees
The charity trustees will make available to each new charity trustee, on or before his or her first appointment:

trustee declaration form to complete in order to confirm fitness to act as a charity trustee by virtue of sections 178-180 of the Charities Act 2011 (or any statutory re-enactment or modification of that provision).

All trustees must agree to an Enhanced DBS check on first taking office and regular checks every three years thereafter.
3) The charitable purpose of Malton White Star Band and Main Activities
For the public benefit, to promote, maintain, and advance education and appreciation of the art of brass band music through:

a. the presentation of public performances

b. providing opportunities to learn, practice and rehearse to encourage participation

c. such other ways as the trustees may determine.
Main Achievements
Following attainment of charitable status, no major changes to the management of the band were required and the transition went smoothly.
During the remainder of the year, fund-raising continued to raise money for the running of the band and also to add to the fund for renovation and decorating of the band room.
The bands were honoured to perform at the Battle of Britain Commemoration Concert as guests of the RAF Association Ryedale Branch. Our MD’s (Iain Fell and Pat France) did an amazing job of providing a suitable program of music for this event.
The Training Band have reached the point where they have been able to play at a number of concerts and engagements including at our annual Christmas Concert at the Milton Rooms in Malton.
We were also very grateful to our Training Band MD (Pat France) for running two five week ‘Introduction to Brass Playing’ courses held October 2024 and March 2025. Following these courses a number of young people and adults have joined the Training Band and now play regularly.
Public Performances
The Senior Band perform regularly at the Malton Food Market and Food Festivals, the bandstands at Filey and Scarborough and also at local agricultural shows.
Concerts included the Battle of Britain Commemoration Concert and our regular Christmas Concert at the Milton Rooms, Malton.
Community activities included a carol service at St. Mary's Church, Wharram-le-Street and playing Christmas carols at various local care homes.
The Training Band performed at a number of events. All performances by young people were licensed under section 37 (3) (B) of the children and young persons act 1963 in respect of Brass Bands England who approved use of their Body of Persons Approval subject to conditions being met.

Opportunities to learn, practice and rehearse
Weekly rehearsals take place at the Band Room on Old Maltongate. Our Community Training Band meets Thursdays 6pm to 7.00pm and our Main Band rehearses Thursdays 7.15pm to 9.00pm. Details of rehearsals and how to get in contact with the band are provided on our website (www.maltonwhitestarband.org.uk).
Two five week ‘Introduction to Brass Playing’ courses were held October 2024 and March 2025, providing free instruction and instruments to beginner musicians of any age. A number of young people and adults who attended these courses have subsequently joined the Training Band and now play regularly.
The Band Room in Old Maltongate is a Grade 2 listed building (The Old Drill Hall) is rented from the Fitzwilliam Malton Estate under a long-term lease and has been our home since 1937. Whilst it’s a lovely space for rehearsals and meetings, the building requires maintenance and improvement work which the band is responsible for. This year we continued to fund-raise for repairs to the lime plaster ceiling and walls, window repairs, floor covering and also internal and external decoration to improve rehearsal facilities available to our training and senior bands.
Encourage Participation
As part of the North Yorkshire Libraries Summer Reading Challenge (encourages children 4-11 years to take part and read 6 books over the Summer) Malton White Star Band provided a drop-in session for people to have a go on different brass instruments and learn about Brass Bands.
Band members participated in a ‘Music for All’ event at St Michael's Church, Malton on 12 October by playing music and providing information and try-outs of various brass instruments.

Friends of Malton White Star Band
The trustees have put in place a regular giving scheme to provide band members and friends who wish to donate to the band a simple means of doing so. Payments are collected through the donation platform we use (GiveTap) and in return for a suggested donation of £5 per month, Friends receive a number of rewards including specially produced band newsletters.
This approach continues the ethos of providing free band membership, instrument and uniform loan but allows income to be generated with donations from those who wish to contribute. The income will be used to help deliver our charitable purpose.

Change of Bank Account
Whilst reviewing available bank accounts for the charity, the Good Shopping Guide Ethical Rating of each bank being considered was taken into account. The Virgin Money Charity Account was selected as it provided the features required together with a favourable ethical rating.
Debts
The charity has no debts.
Donations from organisations
The charity benefits from a Microsoft for non-profits grant which provides free of charge email, file storage and backup for the running of the charity.
HSBC provided £400 Employee Charity Matching following an application from a band parent/helper.
A number of other individuals and organisations very kindly organised fundraiser events including xxxxx and xxxxx (Halloween Hampers) and Norton Bowls Club (Bingo) and the xxxxx family (Pub Quiz at the Blue Ball Pub Malton; the donation was paid into the bank account after 5 April so will appear in next years’ accounts).
Trustee Remuneration & Related Party Transactions
Trustees and committee members are not paid for their services. Travel expenses can be claimed by the MD’s and dep musicians (non-band members who kindly step in to assist with performances) according to the expenses policy.
No other payments are made to individuals except where agreed expenses are claimed for items such as printer paper, toner cartridges, band equipment, tuck shop stock etc.
6) Related Parties
Malton White Star Band is a member of Brass Bands England (BBE) which provides policy templates, DBS checks, safeguarding training, BOPA licenses for young peoples’ performances and general advice. The trustees are grateful to BBE for their help and guidance in moving to registered charity status.
