The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note to the financial statements and comply with the charity's deed of trust, the Charities Act 2011 and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019). ## **Objectives and activities** ## _**Objects and aims**_ To relieve the stress or other charitable need of carers by the provision, or the assistance in the provision, of respite and other help for them and/or those for whom they are caring. The recent census undertaken in 2021 shows that there are currently 49,322 unpaid carers in Dorset who are looking after a family member, friend, or neighbour. This can be due to long-term physical or mental ill health, disability, or problems relating to old age. The figure has risen by 17% since 2001 when there were 42,000 unpaid carers in Dorset. In addition, the number who are providing a significant amount of unpaid care – over 20 hours a week has also increased. We are not surprised that the number of people providing large amounts of care to someone has increased. Providing more than 20 hours of care every week, often alongside work and other family commitments, has a huge impact upon a carer’s health & well-being. This has been exacerbated since the covid pandemic which caused increased pressures on the NHS and social care. The trustees would again like to take this opportunity of expressing our sincere gratitude to our staff, volunteers, donors and supporters who have helped towards the setting up of this charity and who make our work going forward possible. ## _**Public benefit**_ The trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the charity should undertake. The paragraphs in this report set out our activities, achievements, and performance during the year, which are directly related to the objectives and purposes for which the charity exists. The charity aims to achieve its principal objectives and purposes through services to any members of the public in Dorset who are, or have recently been, unpaid carers and who have needs arising from, or relating to, their caring activities. The trustees confirm that they have complied with the requirements of section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission for England and Wales. Page 1 ## **Leonardo Carer Support** ## **Trustees' Report (continued)** ## **Achievements and performance** As a recently created charity most of the activity during this period has involved the purchasing and refurbishment of new offices along with the infrastructure that this required. Our new office suite has multiple facilities for cares including a conference suite, wellbeing suite and multiple meeting spaces. In addition, we have an extensive resource area, both physically and digitally to enable carers to access information and advice. The operational part of providing services to support unpaid carers across Dorset will commence from 1st April 2025. ## **Financial review** The total income for the charity was £424,117. Income is almost entirely derived in the year from transfers from The Leonardo Trust for the initial set up of the charity. Details of this income can be seen in the related party note of the accounts. Expenditure in the year totalled £66,196 with the majority of this in relation to initial works on the charity’s new office. ## _**Policy on reserves**_ The net assets/unrestricted funds of the Charity stood at £357,921 at 31st March 2025, As a new charity our aim is to ensure that we hold a minimum of six months operational expenses in reserve. The trustees have every confidence that we can provide high quality support services to carers that make a positive contribution towards the support and wellbeing of carers across the whole of Dorset. The trustees are now actively engaged in identifying, securing and administrating future sources of funding with a view to ensuring future financial resources in support of Dorset carers and to maintain that support for as long as possible into the future. The Trustees keep this reserves policy under quarterly review. ## _**Principal funding sources**_ The charity has been supported by donations from a linked charity, The Leonardo Trust, which will ensure our future financial sustainability by way of regular donations gained from their investment income. ## **Structure, governance and management** ## _**Nature of governing document**_ The Charity is constituted as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation. Leonardo Carers Support has been registered with the Charity Commission since 18th September 2024. It is intended that Leonardo Carer Support will become the corporate trustee of The Leonardo Trust once the legal process has been completed. Page 2 ## **Leonardo Carer Support** ## **Trustees' Report (continued)** ## _**Recruitment and appointment of trustees**_ Trustees shall be appointed for a term of three years by a resolution of trustees passed at a properly convened meeting. None of the trustees have any beneficial interest in the charity’s assets. New trustees are appointed following a review of skills by the existing trustees and any recommendations of the Chief Executive. Trustee decisions on the recruitment and appointment of new trustees are guided primarily by a requirement to provide as wide a range as possible of skills, experience and knowledge across the sectors within which the charity operates. Final decisions on appointments are taken at a special meeting of the trustees. New trustees are given copies of existing Charity Commission documentation and booklets concerning trustee duties and are required to undergo a trustee induction. Both new and existing trustees are encouraged to undertake formal training and professional development to enable them to better perform their duties. ## _**Arrangements for setting key management personnel remuneration**_ Trustees do not receive any remuneration, other than reimbursement of necessary expenses incurred on charity activities. The remuneration of staff is set by the trustees having regard to local market rates, experience needed, and the degree of responsibility held. Annual salary adjustments are currently aligned to changes in the Consumer Prices Index. Page 3 ## **Leonardo Carer Support** ## **Trustees' Report (continued)** ## **Relationships with related parties** Currently the Chief Executive Officer, the charity’s accountants and asset managers attend board meetings with the trustees on a 4 monthly basis, and these meetings are treated as a means of consultation, dissemination of information, financial scrutiny, governance and to ensure future strategic development and growth. In addition, the Chief Executive Officer liaises with various trustees on an ongoing basis regarding specific issues, financial management, legal compliance, and human resource matters. ## **Risk assessment** The Chief Executive Officer oversees the health and safety officer, and maintains the various registers required to record and monitor risks. The principal risks to the activities of the Charity that have been identified by the trustees relate to: ## a) Voluntary income falling below forecast: The Leonardo Trust is the main financial donor to the charity. This income, in the form of regular donations gained from their investment income will be donated to Leonardo Carer Support for the foreseeable future. ## b) General incidence of negative publicity: Whilst there is always a potential risk of negative publicity from the media and other individuals reporting on charities. The trustees hope to build upon the previous excellent reputation of The Leonardo Trust. We have every confidence that Leonard Carer Support will be able to continue to provide high quality support services to carers previously provided by The Leonardo Trust. We will also be developing new projects alongside or in partnership with other charities and organisations. Any significant commitment of our funds to such joint projects will be accompanied by due diligence reviews of both the proposed nature of the service and the other charity or organisation involved to limit any reputational damage to Leonard Carer Support. ## c) Negative outcomes from service provision: The Charity aims to develop direct services to carers. The trustees have implemented robust safeguarding and monitoring systems which we will continue to develop as services are expanded. The Chief Executive is the designated Safeguarding Officer. ## **Equality & Diversity Statement** The charity is committed to ensuring diversity, anti-discriminatory practice and providing equal opportunities for all our employees and clients. The entity is for the public benefit and is bound by its constitution. The principal address can be found on page 1 of these statements. ## **2 Accounting policies** ## **Statement of compliance** The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the second edition of the Charities Statement of Recommended Practice issued in October 2019, the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) and the Charities Act 2011. ## **Basis of preparation** Leonardo Carer Support meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102. The accounts (financial statements) have been prepared under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant note(s) to these accounts. ## **Going concern** The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the charity's ability to continue as a going concern. ## **Income and endowments** Income is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received. Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount. ## _**Donated services and facilities**_ Goods donated for resale will be included at fair value, being the expected proceeds from sales less the expected costs of sale. If it is practical to assess the fair value at receipt, it will be recognised in stock and 'Income from other trading activities'. Upon sale, the value of the stock will be charges against 'Income from trading activities' and the proceeds will be recognised as 'Income from other trading activities'. where it is impractical to fair value the items due to the volume of low value items they will not be recognised in the financial statements until they are sold. This income will be recognised within 'Income from other trading activities'. Where the donated good is a fixed asset it will be measured at fair value, unless it is impractical to measure this reliably, in which case the cost of the item to the donor will be used. the gain will be recognised as income from donations and a corresponding amount will be included in the appropriate fixed asset category and depreciated over the useful economic life in accordance with the charity's accounting policy. All costs are allocated to the applicable expenditure heading that aggregate similar costs to that category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated on a basis consistent with the use of resources, with central staff costs allocated on the basis of time spent, and depreciation charges allocated on the portion of the asset’s use. Other support costs are allocated based on the spread of staff costs. ## _**Charitable activities**_ Charitable expenditure comprises those costs incurred by the charity in the delivery of its activities and services for its beneficiaries. It includes both costs that can be allocated directly to such activities and those costs of an indirect nature necessary to support them. ## **Governance costs** These include the costs attributable to the charity’s compliance with constitutional and statutory requirements, including audit, strategic management and trustees meetings and reimbursed expenses. ## **Taxation** The charity is considered to pass the tests set out in Paragraph 1 Schedule 6 of the Finance Act 2010 and therefore it meets the definition of a charitable company for UK corporation tax purposes. Accordingly, the charity is potentially exempt from taxation in respect of income or capital gains received within categories covered by Chapter 3 Part 11 of the Corporation Tax Act 2010 or Section 256 of the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992, to the extent that such income or gains are applied exclusively to charitable purposes. ## **Tangible fixed assets** Individual fixed assets are initially recorded at cost, less any subsequent accumulated depreciation and subsequent accumulated impairment losses. ## **Depreciation and amortisation** Depreciation is provided on tangible fixed assets so as to write off the cost or valuation, less any estimated residual value, over their expected useful economic life as follows: Computer Equipment- 3 year straight line Freehold property - 50 year straight line Caravan- 15 year straight line Furniture and Fittings - 4 year straight line ## **Debtors** Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered. Income within the financial statements is recognised when amounts can be reliable measured and it is probable these will be received. There is uncertainty regarding the recoverable amount of properties included within the estate and the estimated future liabilities on the estate. The estimated residual value of the estate is £14,095,723 less amounts received by other beneficiaries of £10,516,593. After deducting the amounts received and estimated potential future liabilities on the estate of £2,750,038, the current estimated remaining amounts due to the charity is £829,092.
