’ - Trustees Report AGM 2025

Welcome to the AGM for the end of our first Financial Year which as it is our first, ran from Sep 2024 when the Charity was first registered, to 31 Jan 2026. Future Years will be 1 February to 31 January.

This has been both a hectic and exciting first year which saw us establishing our charity and beginning to grow funds, initially to ensure we were financially secure and to cover our set up and overheads, but then towards the end of 2025 we felt in a position to award our first local grants. We were absolutely over the moon as our very first award ever was to be able to support Constantine Social Club with funds for a pensioners’ Christmas lunch.

The other grants awarded in this financial year have been to: Constantine Museum, The Tolmen Theatre Company, and a Girl Guiding project. These grants have totalled £1,200. Applications have also been received and approved, but not yet paid, to: Constantine Carnival, Constantine Silver Band, Gweek Seals Under Fives, Glebe Woodland Project and a grant to support a local resident following fire damage. We also have several other enquiries in the pipeline going forward into FY26/27.

This is what a year’s hard work running the Charity and the shop, which does the work of the charity ‘Goodwill Constantine’ has been all about - it is our reason for being. Donated items are bought into the shop and sold on, creating funds enabling Goodwill Constantine to support local projects. It’s about a community working together, it’s about recycling, repurposing, and then redistributing the funds to help keep valuable local projects going when they need some support.

It goes without saying that it doesn’t just happen, it’s like a military operation with a phenomenal team of 28 volunteers ranging from our youngest at 9 years to our oldest at 80+ who volunteer from 1.5hrs to 16 hrs per week. Most importantly they sort through the wide selection of donations that we receive

on a daily basis, and then display the items creatively in the shop ready for purchase and then open the door and serve the customers! Behind the scenes we have volunteers who form part of the management committee, four of which are the Trustees who oversee the running of the Charity. Some of the volunteers make regular visits to the recycling centre with items that are not suitable for sale or repurposing, PAT all the electrical items, sell items on eBay, advertise on Facebook, create artwork for the windows, paint and clean the shop. Then of course there are the Trustees and Committee who work, out of sight, on assessing grant applications, charity management, accounts, banking, insurance, policy writing, and all the administrative duties of running a charity and shop, a massive thanks to them all.

Other volunteering has included three local teenagers who each spent six months alongside us on a Saturday learning the ropes and helping with all the behind the scenes jobs, as well as front of house serving customers as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award (ironing is always a skill worth learning)! We felt enormously proud that we could give such support and are thrilled that we have one student returning this coming year having enjoyed the experience so much as he moves on to the next DofE level, together with two new students joining us late March.

Moving forward we are forever striving to improve the look and extend the wider reputation and appeal of the shop. Our landlords, as part of their maintenance programme replaced in March 2025 all the shop windows and front door allowing our customers to actually see into the shop after years of blown double glazing. Helped by one of our younger volunteers who I have called our ‘artist in residence’ with her creative designs, together with a small team of volunteers, our windows have become a talking point in the village with local customers regularly saying how they wait for the next design!

Our thanks as always to our wonderful landlords who enable our project to continue by allowing us to rent our shop at an affordable rate.

There have been many highs this year when we have stepped beyond the shop door raising awareness for what we are all about. The ‘Murder Mystery’ last January, the Vintage Fashion Show as part of the ‘Brass on Grass’ weekend in July, and a stall at Carnival in August. We were helped by Mark Harris at Potager in creating a website, which we hope can be developed further this year, Hannah Sole posts on local Facebook to advertise on our behalf and Grahame Sole sells some items on our behalf on Ebay.

Inside the shop we have gradually replaced the majority of strip lighting for energy efficient LED and changed our energy supplier from EON to British Gas Lite for a better long term deal on energy price. Painting and cleaning is ongoing and we have to thank another volunteer for the painting in the children’s area. Our store room is as neat and tidy as it has ever been and we have half a garage locally where we are able to store out of season clothing.

Recycling and repurposing is a major part of the operation, just some examples are: Several local organisations such as ‘Bodmin Heritage Railway’ (Registered Charity), and Mylor Chandlery take any unwanted or damaged fabrics to use as cleaning rags, bras go to a charity for Africa, wetsuits to ‘BF Cornwall’ (Registered Charity), wooden toys and dressing up clothes to local playgroups, large household items to ‘Hidden Help’(Registered Charity), damaged but recoverable clothes to ‘Make A Mends,’ children’s clothing to a family project in Camborne, books to ‘National Trust’ (Registered Charity), ‘Flicka Donkey Sanctuary’ (Registered Charity), ‘Friends of the Royal Cornwall Hospital’ (Registered Charity), posh hats to ‘Shallal’, puzzles and games to a Dementia Café, and on one occasion soft toys to ‘Cats Protection’(Registered Charity). Only the worst of items have to be disposed of.

We must remind ourselves that the shop is much more than a ‘shop’ – it is a hub where folk come for information, a place for a chat and to find company, a place of support, a place to shelter from the rain whilst waiting for a bus, a place to volunteer, a place to rediscover lost skills and to learn others. A place to help us all feel part of our community.

We plan to increase our grant giving as the year progresses. Grants primarily are awarded within the parish of Constantine, the wider Cornwall community, and on occasion, nationally across the UK to organisations, charities and individuals

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31/12/2025 .

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent The charity’s gross income exceeded £25,000 and I am qualified to examiner's statement undertake the examination by being a qualified member of Association of Accounting Technicians.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination, which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
