Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document
The object of Treasure Chest Breastfeeding York is, for the public benefit, to promote and protect the good health and wellbeing of parents and children in the City of York and its environs by promoting, supporting and providing information about breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is defined as feeding a child wholly or partially with milk from the breast; it includes ‘chestfeeding’ which refers to feeding milk from the chest either directly from the parent’s body or with a supplementer.

The trustees have taken the commission’s public benefit guidance into account when making decisions about the charity’s aims and activities.
To meet our aims to promote, support and provide information about breastfeeding, Treasure Chest has:

Provided in person, drop-in support groups at three community venues.

Offered an online group once a week.

Supported parents of newborns on the maternity ward at York Hospital.

All the services we provide are delivered by our volunteers. Twenty-six volunteers played a part in service delivery in the period covered by this report.

In order to deliver up-to-date and evidence-based information, all our volunteers complete initial training (comprised of the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers’ Peer Supporter online course, and five in person sessions with an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant [IBCLC] and Breastfeeding Counsellor). Once qualified to act as a Peer Supporter, our volunteers must complete two Update Sessions per year. These sessions combine elements of training and supervision, to ensure knowledge is refreshed or updated with new evidence-based information, and to offer each volunteer support to act confidently but within the defined limits of their role.

Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
Treasure Chest completed the following core activities in the seven months from September 2024 to March 2025:

Provided in person support from Breastfeeding Peer Supporters at three community venues on 79 separate occasions, to 224 families.

Provided one-to-one support online on 8 separate occasions, to 9 families.

Supported 124 parents on the maternity ward at York Hospital.

Delivered 6 antenatal workshops providing information about breastfeeding to 31 expectant parents.

Answered questions and signposted to sources of support on our private Facebook group, which has a membership of over 3,000 people.
Here is some feedback from families who have used our services:
“ I really liked how friendly and open the Peer Supporters were. I felt comfortable and was able to have all my questions answered. ”
“I visited [a Treasure Chest breastfeeding group] when my baby was 5 weeks old and I'd been using nipple shields since birth. I'd had multiple appointments with the feeding team at the hospital and advice from midwives about how to come off them and had had no success. Then I visited Treasure Chest in Acomb once and the Peer Supporter was so kind and knowledgeable and encouraged me to let my baby find the nipple himself and created a safe, comfortable space where I felt able to do that. He latched on immediately and a week later we haven't used a nipple shield since! ”
“ [Seeing a Peer Supporter] kept me motivated to keep going despite my challenges with establishing breastfeeding. ”
“ [The Peer Supporter] offered support as I prepare to end my 14 month long breastfeeding journey. She gave so many words of encouragement and made me feel so proud of myself for achieving all that I have in our feeding journey. She was the first person in a long time to say ‘well done’ to me for still feeding my son, and I didn’t realise how much I needed to hear that until she told me today… I walked away from today’s session feeling so proud of myself and grateful to have such a great service available for parents. ”
In addition to our usual activities, this year we were also honoured to be supported by the York Medical Society and to collaborate with them to host a ‘Community of Practice’ day conference in October 2024. The aim was to bring together stakeholders working in the area of breastfeeding support to learn from each other and develop ways of working together to achieve better outcomes for families.

Brief statement of the
charity’s policy on reserves
Treasure Chest holds sufficient reserves to allow the organisation to wind up if necessary and meet its outstanding obligations. These obligations may include payments owed to contractors, bank charges and insurance for the winding-up period. The Treasurer reports on unrestricted reserves at each committee meeting. No spending may be authorised that would take the unrestricted reserves below the minimum level set for the year.

Treasure Chest’s principal sources of funding are grants from charitable trusts and foundations. We also received financial support from the City of York Council to train a cohort of new Peer Supporters during the report period, as well as donations from York Medical Society and Pavers Shoes. The charity has a small number of regular donors and occasionally receives funds from fundraising events.
