Karenni Community UK

Report & Financial Statements For the year ending 31 March 2025

Registered Charity number: 1209903

The trustees have pleasure in presenting their report and the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 March 2025.

Principal aims

Karenni Community UK is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, the object of the organisation as set out in our constitution are:

Karenni Community UK also operates under the name Karenni Greenland

Our work

The ongoing conflict has continued to deepen the humanitarian crisis across the State of Karenni and other frontier states in Myanmar. This was further exacerbated by the devastating earthquake of 28 March 2025.

Karenni Community was formally structured as a charity in September 2024. In the six months since it was formed we have focused on both delivering immediate support for the Karenni people of Myanmar as well as supporting local development projects in the area.

Humanitarian Aid

We work closely with local partners to ensure that aid reaches the most vulnerable populations, including displaced families and individuals who have lost their homes and livelihood.

We support these local groups to supply:

Over this period, we also provided funding to Luke’s Hospital. Most hospitals in the state have been destroyed or abandoned, so this makeshift jungle hospital provides lifesaving treatment daily. This hospital was featured in the Emmy award winning Sky documentary ‘The Last Hospital’.

Education

We believe education is vitally important to ensure the future the country. In many IDP camps, makeshift schools have been established, we support local educators to teach children in IDP camps and support the provision of teaching supplies.

Over this period we have been supporting Rainbow School. This school, staffed by volunteer teachers, provides free education to almost 200 displaced children. Covering both primary and secondary education

Karenni Greenland Project

Karenni State has been persistently exploited for its natural resources, including timer and hydroelectric power. From 2001 to 2023, the state lost over 80kha of tree cover, equivalent to a 9% decrease in tree cover since 2000, and 45.2 Mt of CO₂ emissions.

We are working to reverse that. Working with local community volunteers we support planting and logistics to replant primary forest and support villages to source timber sustainably.

The Greenland project has been supported through personal donations from our charity trustees since 2023 supporting the planting of over 13,000 trees. This year the charity has started the logistic process to expand this programme with thousands more trees expected to be planted in 2025.

Financial Review

Donations came almost exclusively from small individual doners, with a small amount raised from fundraising activities. Individual giving comes mainly from the Myanmar diaspora, with small donations coming from the local population.

Investment policy

The charity does not currently hold sufficient funds to warrant investment

Reserves policy

Due to the fluctuation of funding from individual doners, grants have been provided on an adhoc basis. The charity does not currently have any long-term financial commitments, or employees and has no deficit.

Currently the charity does not hold significant reserves and looks to continue to operate in a lean manner. This will continue to be reviewed if the donation or the expense landscape changes.

The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report above.
