CAW ANNUAL REPORT 2026

We are fortunate to have had a dedicated workshop since 2004, which boasts 14 lathes permanently set up, together with facilities to host demonstrations and club social events. Here CAW holds regular evening turning sessions though the week, with amazing, qualified tutors who give their time voluntarily, to support and further members ’ skills.

CAW also provides ‘Learn to Turn’ teaching sessions, half day introductions sessions and ‘one to one’ tuition options on Saturdays, as well as monthly club night meetings with demonstrations by other CAW members and occasional, whole day lectures by visiting professional turners, on all manner of topics related to woodturning.

Cornwall Association of Woodturners has nearly 100 members across all abilities and backgrounds, including people with limited mobility and wheelchair users, spanning from 11 to 90 years of age. While currently, the majority of members are retired men, 60+ years of age; we have enjoyed a substantial increase of women joining the club over the past few years and we’ve also had children visit with parents, sometimes for DofE, or a Guide badge.

Members attend weekly from towns and villages across Cornwall. A significant number would be socially isolated if not for the activities of CAW, many living in areas of deprivation and isolation. All benefit from the physical activity and social interaction that CAW provides. It gives many a sense of purpose and interest, through to developing and preserving heritage skills - some even becoming professionals.

Through the year, we attend local fairs and events, where members demonstrate woodturning to the public, raising awareness of and interest in the craft of woodturning.

The last year has seen CAW continue to thrive, with membership remaining pretty stable. The ‘Learn to Turn’ courses have proved very popular and have resulted in people becoming members and joining the weekday evening turning sessions. There has also been continued engagement with CAW through the turning evening induction process.

As a result of the landlord’s plans to redevelop the land where the club building stands, we have spent considerable time and energy investigating our options and finding a way to ensure the future of the club. It’s been a very long process, headed by our energetic project manager, but we now seem to be close to finalizing the move to a nearby part of the same site and the creation of a purpose-built workshop and are in the process of pursuing funding support. The new building, which we are planning to be completed in 2027, will give us considerably better facilities, a significantly improved workspace and will enable us to further develop our community engagement, by enabling availability for a range of individuals and groups.

We have a number of qualified tutors who give their time freely, enabling turning to take place on four nights and one day every week and we are very grateful to them for their willingness to volunteer in this capacity. We’re also grateful to our Management Committee and Trustees who work behind the scenes to ensure that CAW continues to thrive.

We know that we are very fortunate to have a dedicated workshop for turning and are looking forward to enjoying the significantly improved facilities that our new workshop will provide.

Independent Examiner’s Report

I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 31[st] August 2025, which are set out on the attached pages.

Respective responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner

The Charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The Charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under Section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the

Charities Act) and that an Independent Examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:

• Examine the accounts under Section 145 of the Charities Act.

• To follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under Section 145 (5)(b) of the Charities Act), and

• To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of Independent Examiner’s Report

My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a “true and fair” view, and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent Examiner’s Statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Basis of preparing the Financial Statements

The fFinancial Statements of the Charitable Incorporated Organisation, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015), Financial Reporting Stantad 102 The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical costs convention.

Income

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Expenditure

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as these is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Tangible Fixed Assets

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life.

Fixtures and Fittings - 2% Plant and Equipment - 2%

Taxation

The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.

Fund Accounting

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.

Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.

Endowment funds are those which represent gifts of endowment. Permanent endowment funds are used where there is no power for the Trustees to convert the capital into income. Expendable endowment funds are used when the Trustees have the power to convert the capital into income.
