Objectives and Activities
Oxen Park Cinema Club is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).
The object of the CIO is for the public benefit, to advance public education in the art of film by providing and managing a cinema in Colton and surrounding parishes and to promote the knowledge, understanding and the appreciation of film through the showing of films, discussions and by such other means as the trustees deem appropriate.
The Trustees have due regard to Charity Commission guidance on public benefit when planning and broad and varied annual programme and associated activities.
Once again we had an excellent and varied programme of films in our 2024/25 season, well supported by members and newcomers alike.
Our membership numbers rose by just over 10% to 140 in 2024/25. Members benefit from discounted ticket prices and in the main our films are attended by many more members than non-members.
Last season we showed 31 films including 8 private hires. The top films with two screenings were Six Inches Of Soil (53), Wilding (50), The Taste of Things (48) and The Great Escaper (43). Overall numbers despite reminders going out. Attendance figures, but not ticket receipts, obviously come down with no-shows.
From the films with single screenings, Wicked Little Letters, Oppenheimer, Anatomy of a Fall and Past Lives all gave us full houses. The two Supper Specials, which are amongst these, are always very popular thanks to the hospitality of the Manor House team who look after us well. We welcome the support we are able to give them.
We signed up with the London Mountain Film Festival again, watching over 100 films to select 2 programmes to show over a weekend. With so many films to choose from we decided to screen two different film programmes, but with relatively low numbers attending we plan to stick with just one amazing programme next season.
We officially registered OPCC with the Charity Commission in August having updated our constitution in preparation for our registration.
Under the new constitution one third of our Trustees, based on length of service, are required to stand down each year. The three retirees this year are Tamsin Kidwell, David Hamer and Barbara Osborne, but we are delighted to say that all three are standing for re-election at the AGM.
Our committee of 7 trustees continue to meet at regular intervals, and apart from the joy of watching and selecting films, we check out and update policies, keep tabs on spending (thank you Tamsin) and deal with the myriad other admin tasks that all committees have to handle.
The award for film watching without any doubt goes to Glenn who is the most avid film watcher we have ever had. We have lost count of how many films he has seen this year and maybe he has lost count too! Thank you Glenn your input is awesome.
We are going to lose Barbara later in the year when she moves to , she always has sound advice and ideas, and contributes enormously on film nights by regularly acting as Her contribution over the past few years has been really appreciated and we will miss her.
Other thanks go to Roger our poster designer and Iain who expertly collates the programme and prints the posters.
Finally, with the departure of Barbara, we are on the lookout for a replacement trustee and welcome interest from any of our members!
Financial Review
Our accounts show a loss of £652 for the year, compared to a profit of £866 in the previous year.
In actual fact, the two years were not so dissimilar because the electricity, oil and water costs for the prior year as well as the current year both fell .
Overall, the club is running nicely at around about the break even point, allowing us to keep membership and ticket prices at the current level for the upcoming season.
