3. Structure, Governance and Management
Malawi Healthcare Support UK (MAHECAS)
Governing Document :
MAHECAS is registered in England and Wales as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) registration number 1209295 since July 2024 and is governed by Constitution which can be provided on request. The CIO registration follows former registration as a Charity with another Constitution registered with the Charities Commission number 1057994 on 12 September 1996.
Malawi Health Care Support has no full-time employees and is governed by a Board of Trustees as well as an appointed executive team who oversees the strategic direction of the organisation. The board and team ensures that compliance with legal and regulatory requirements is met.
In the year under review the Trustees and executives met quarterly throughout the year to review progress and address emerging needs.
The charity is also supported by a team of dedicated volunteers whose commitment has been essential to the success of our programs.
Trustee Selection : Trustees are typically appointed based on dedication to the organization as well as their professional expertise in healthcare, finance, charity, projects, fundraising or international development.
Risk Management : The trustees review major risks, particularly regarding fund transfers to
Malawi by funding request-based projects. The trustees have also worked with notable Charities within Malawi. MAHECAS have also coordinators who are volunteers based in Malawi including
Kamuzu University of Health Sciences and Society of Medical Doctors in Malawi to mitigate supply chain disruptions.
4. Objectives and Activities
Our Charitable Purpose :
The principal objective of Malawi Health Care Support is to enhance access to quality healthcare in Malawi through the provision of resources, training, and support to local health institutions. It also aims at relieving sickness and preserving health by providing medical equipment, funding healthcare projects and supporting medical services in Malawi.
Public Benefit : The trustees have complied with the duty to have due regard to the Charity Commission’s Public Benefit Guidance.
Main Activities:
The main activities include the following:

Fundraising through sponsored Big walks like the annual London Big walk, sporting events like bowling and the annual MAHECAS Golf tournament, and the annual dinner dance.

Procurement of medical supplies for Malawian hospitals.

Collaborative projects with local Malawian health authorities.

To further these aims, some of the activities for the past 10 years are:

Funding the purchase of PPE during the COVID 19 pandemic

Donation of HDU and ICU beds to hospitals around the country.

Donation of COVID Beds to hospitals and National Covid Centres

Funding for the Cervical Cancer early treatment, screening, and awareness workshops programme

Funding for setting up a modern Dental Unit at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital

Funding for the purchase of Bicycle ambulances for expectant mothers attend a rural Health Centre

Donating theatre equipment for the maternity department of a hospital

Donating wheelchairs to an accident and emergency department of a major hospital.

Donating relief items to victims of a natural disaster caused by a cyclone.
4. Achievements and Performance
Income and Expenditure
In the year 2024/25 MAHECAS about 18 esteemed members of MAHECAS paid by direct debit into the MAHECAS bank account raising a sum of £2,496.09 but also incurred bank charges of around £255.54 leaving us with a net of £2,240. 55
The volunteers, Coordinators and supporters in Boston organized a bi-annual International Food Tasting Event, a hike to the Ben Nevis, Cycling and a game of golf which raised £3,042,69. However we there were expenses in form of hall , PAT testing of the sound system and electrics, Insurance which came to around £649,73 making a net income of £2392,96.
Through events like cycling, marathon runners, hiking the Ben Nevis and MAHECAS website visitors volunteers and supporters raised £3,093.61 through Justgiving online portal however Justgiving portal subscription of £216 left us with a net income of £2,877.61.
The annual dinner was a success in terms of turn-up and MAHECAS presence and awareness though the night brought an income of £9,220 it did not fare very well with deficit £1,630.
Volunteers and supporters organized a MAHECAS Annual Golf Open which had an inflow of £2,400 and bookings and green fees cost about £1,350 left the income of £1,050. There was also MAHECAS supports online giving of £1,538,90.
The London Big Walk also raised £119.
MAHECAS also bought and shipped an Eclipse 5 Portable Oxygen Concentrators worth £2,624 landed cost.
The bank balance at the beginning of the year was £56,641,19 and was £53,257,47 as at 28 February 2025.
The Trustees and executive members work as volunteers and expenses were only paid as a refund to any amount spent on behalf of the charity for instance event space bookings which needed online transfer as we could use cheques payments only.
