Structure, Governance and Management
The 4th London Boys’ Brigade & Girls’ Association (4th London BBGA) was established as a uniformed youth organisation in 1892, becoming a registered CIO in July 2024.
The 4th London BBGA is governed by its constitution, with trustees responsible for the policies, procedures and governance oversight, with day-to-day operation being led by a team of volunteers. There is some overlap between the volunteers and the trustees to ensure continuity and transparency.
The 4th London BBGA partners with St Anselm’s Church, Kennington to support the delivery of the charity object; and is a member of The Boys’ Brigade UK. All trustees are registered as leaders with The Boys’ Brigade UK.
There must be a minimum of three trustees on the board; with a maximum of eight appointments. The Company Captain, Company Treasurer and Company Chaplain are appointed as trustees for as long as they remain within those roles. Objectives and Activities
The object of the 4th London BBGA is the advancement of Christ’s Kingdom among boys and girls and the promotion of habits of obedience, reverence, discipline, self-respect and all that tends towards a true Christian character.
To deliver this objective, the 4th London BBGA has delivered weekly sessions for children and young people aged 4-18, which include activities such as craft, faith development, games, learning, life skills, sports. The sessions support the development of the children and young people exploring their Christian faith and their ability to become active and positive members of the local community. Throughout the year, these weekly activities took place in Henry Fawcett Primary School due to heating not working in St Anselm’s Church. Storage of equipment has been at the 2nd West Kent Boys’ Brigade & Girls’ Association in Blackheath.
In addition to the weekly sessions, day trips also took place during the year, which provided opportunities for young people to take part in activities that are not possible during weekly sessions.
During the year, trustees have reviewed and implemented several policies to ensure the trustee board is able to support the volunteers involved in running the 4th London BBGA activities and to ensure the charity is following the Charity Commission best practice.
All those involved with the 4th London BBGA are volunteers and the charity could not operate without their much valued contribution, both with their time, energy and willingness to pay for themselves to participate in some activities, which would otherwise not be possible to organise for our members.
Achievements and performance
During the year, the 4th London BBGA has worked with between 25 and 30 children & young people each week. We have supported one young person to achieve their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, had a successful trip to the pantomime, were involved with the Lord Mayor’s Show through our link with YOU London and took our older members White Water Rafting, providing them with an opportunity to experience an adventurous activity at a subsidised cost.
Financial review
The 4th London BBGA’s balance as of 31st July 2025 stood at £6,058.20 spread across three Bank Accounts, two with Barclays Bank & one with Co-Operative Bank. Of the £6,058.20, there are restricted funds of £371.66 in our Fair Opportunities Fund, which is used to subsidise trips and activities for those who would not otherwise be able to attend.
In addition to the funds outlined above, the 4th London BBGA has an investment portfolio managed on our behalf by Rathbones Investment Management. As of 31st July 2025, the value of these investments were £28,791.
Three trustees are signatories with each bank and Rathbones and two signatories are required to authorise payments, except those made by debit card from one of the Barclays Accounts.
Income is mainly from termly subscriptions paid for each member who attends each week and money from successful grant applications. The main grant we received this year was from Centenary Memorial Sunday School Trust, who provided a grant to cover our rent and storage costs. Additional smaller amounts come from donations; fundraising activities’ our tuck shop; uniform, which is subsidised; and charges for trips and additional activities that take place, many of which are subsidised.
Expenditure during the year has mainly been for rent and storage costs, with other costs including awards, badges, uniform, equipment, event and activity costs and other costs that enable us to run an active and engaging programme of activities.
For the year ending 31st July 2025, the 4th London BBGA recorded a surplus of £317.93
The trustees have appointed a finance committee consisting of three trustees persons to oversee the financial performance of the company and to produce
budgets and ensure the company accounts are kept up to date. Where possible the finance committee should where possible aim to budget a £300 surplus each year.
The 4th London BBGA bank accounts should be used as follows:
-
The Barclays current account should be used for day-to-day banking.
-
The Barclays savings account should be used for reserve funds.
-
The Co-Op current account should be used for restricted funds.
The 4th London BBGA should always aim to have a minimum of £2,500 in reserve funds that is accessible without notice.
The finance committee will make recommendations regarding financial investments, however decisions are made by the full trustee board. Performance of investments will be reported by the treasurer to the full trustee board at each trustee meeting. All financial investments must be ethical and not bring the 4th London BBGA into disrepute, nor put the financial sustainability of the organisation at risk.
Trustees have previously sought external advice from those with more knowledge of investment portfolios to ensure that our investments meet the requirements of our investment policy.
