## **Section C Objectives and activities**
**To advance the education of children from socially and/or economically disadvantaged backgrounds in Exeter by providing Summary of the objects of the grants of financial assistance to the schools they attend, designed to charity set out in its assist in the provision of additional facilities (not required to be provided by the local education authority) to support the learning and governing document educational development of such children.** Trustees have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit. A number of factors have contributed in terms of the benefit of the Charity’s activities to Beacon Heath, one of the most deprived areas of Exeter, based on all the available social and health indices. Many of these students attract a pupil premium.
**St James’ School, Beacon Heath** In the summer of 2024, Educational Psychology students from the School of Education, University of Exeter undertook an Evaluation Study of the St James’ School Study Club and published their report to the School and to Charity Trustees in the autumn of that year.
This research built on an earlier Evaluation undertaken by staff of St James’ School in 2022, which had identified the value of the Club in terms of better behaviour, better grades and fewer detentions and the essential contribution of the Beacon Community Centre and its Volunteers to its success.
Students had referred to difficulties in completing homework at home. They had commented on the lack of pressure from teachers in the working environment created at the Beacon Centre, which had contributed to their greater engagement with their homework and their enjoyment of learning. The interaction with volunteers was particularly conducive to a positive study experience.
A 2023 Celebration of the Study Club for parents, members of the local community and Volunteers affirmed its value in encouraging ambition among the students involved.
Students, staff, parents and Community Volunteers all participated in the 2024 University study. The University placed particular emphasis in their report on the benefit and relevance of the Study Club to Students and their families and to the wider Beacon Heath Community. This study was presented by the Educational Psychology students to the School of Education, University of Exeter, raising the awareness of the Study Club’s work among University staff, Masters and PhD students in the wider Exeter community and supporting the wider relevance of the community based model.

## **Willowbrook Primary School, Beacon Heath**
In July, 2023, the Exeter Study Club commenced a Reading and Mentoring project for year 4/5 students at Willowbrook Primary School, Beacon Heath, Exeter to support them in developing their reading skills and relating to adults. This involves Volunteers in eating lunch with one of the children, followed by sessions to support them in reading aloud to achieve 110 words a minute and in arts and crafts work and playing games.
The students’ reading skills have measurably improved by an average of 16 per cent . Comments by the students speak of their enjoyment in being helped with their reading aloud and silent reading. They make particular mention of their enjoyment in making puppets, talking about the weekends and “doing art”. General comments referred to the wish to spend more time with the Volunteer.
It is intended that Volunteers will also work with Year 6 children as the current cohort work through the School to give them more confidence in progressing to Secondary School, including St James’ School where the Study Club operates.

Section D Achievements and performance The St James’ Study Club was has continued to be **Summary of the main** promoted by the School among students and **Achievements of the charity** supported by St James’ School and has continued **during the year** to meet at the Beacon Community Centre with community volunteers in attendance.. The Evaluation Study undertaken by the School of Education, University of Exeter in the summer of 2024 recognised the positive impact of the Study Group on students and their families and the local Beacon Heath community, The Willowbrook School Reading and Mentoring Project has continued to improve levels of confidence among the children involved in the project and to produce good results, recognised and supported by the school community. A fundraising concert for the Exeter Study Club took place in the summer of 2024, raising the profile of the Charity in the local community.

adopted.|In the 2024/25 Financial Year we have not made any grants. We will
draw on the initial income form the Concert to build up our reserves
and create a sound basis for future financial support. This will enable us
to be able to work with schools to define their priorities in future years in
line with the Charity’s Grant Making policy.
Within the policy, a grant is defined as a financial award the Exeter Study
Club makes from its funds. The purpose of such grants is to support
defined school activities in response to the needs of young people who
are educationally disadvantaged, as identified by the School, drawing on
Government funding criteria for pupil premiums. Grants are awarded in
support of students whose household income/family circumstances meet
these funding criteria and students who have special educational needs.
