The advancement of the Christian faith in the Diocese of Maiwut and in the Episcopal Church of South Sudan. 2. The relief of poverty in the Diocese of Maiwut and South Sudan ## **Summary of Main Activities** During this reporting period, Friends of Maiwut focused on establishing its operational foundations, supporting ministry in Maiwut, facilitating discipleship training, and developing the communications, publicity and fundraising capacity needed to sustain the charity’s work. The charity’s main activities during the period included: ## 1. **Ministry donations to clergy in Maiwut** The charity provided financial support to clergy and local ministry workers serving in Maiwut, helping to sustain Christian ministry, pastoral care and church leadership in a challenging context. 2. **Facilitation of discipleship training conferences** Friends of Maiwut supported discipleship training and Bible teaching initiatives, including preparation, facilitation and related costs for training conferences serving local clergy, lay leaders and church communities. 3. **Travel and subsistence to South Sudan, including Maiwut** The charity covered travel and subsistence costs associated with visits to South Sudan and Maiwut, enabling leadership engagement, relationship-building, programme assessment, and local consultation. 4. **Website, marketing and publicity** - Friends of Maiwut developed its public profile through website development, communications materials, publicity content, and donor-facing information to clearly explain the charity’s purpose, needs, and impact. 5. **Mailing, fundraising and donor engagement** The charity undertook mailing, supporter communication, and fundraising activities to build relationships with donors, churches, and partner organisations, and to encourage long-term support for the work in Maiwut. ## **Financial Review** During the period, Friends of Maiwut received a total income of **£24,398** and incurred a total expenditure of **£22,453** . This resulted in a net surplus of **£1,945** for the period. On 30 September 2025, the charity held cash funds of **£1,945** , subject to final bank reconciliation and trustee review. The trustees are grateful to the generosity of donors, churches, grant-makers and supporters who enabled the charity to respond swiftly to ministry and mission needs in Maiwut during this important transitional period. ## **Reserves Policy** As Friends of Maiwut is still in the early stages of development, the trustees recognise the need to develop an appropriate reserves policy as the charity’s income and expenditure become more regular and predictable. The trustees’ aim is to hold a modest unrestricted reserve sufficient to meet short-term operational commitments, protect against unexpected fluctuations in income, and ensure that commitments to partners in Maiwut are made responsibly. Given the current level of expenditure, the trustees will, over time, seek to build reserves equivalent to approximately one to three months of essential operating costs, subject to donor restrictions and available funds. ## **Governance** Responsibility for setting policy, approving expenditure and overseeing the charity’s activities rests with the trustees. The trustees meet as required to review the charity’s work, monitor financial activity, assess risks and ensure the charity operates in accordance with its charitable purposes. ## **Risk Statement** The charity operates in a context of significant operational, financial, legal, safeguarding, and reputational risks, particularly because part of its work relates to South Sudan and communities affected by poverty, insecurity, and fragility. The trustees seek to manage these risks through careful planning, due diligence, appropriate record-keeping, local consultation, safeguarding awareness, transparent financial management, and regular review of charitable activities. ## **Responsibilities of Trustees** The trustees are responsible for preparing financial statements for each accounting period that record the charity's receipts and payments.
