Trustees annual report

The trustees of Electric Pink Voices are pleased to present our annual report for the period to 5 April 2025. This is our first annual report as a registered charity (number 1208794). In November 2022, the first rehearsal of a new queer choir for Blackpool was held. Initially a collaboration between The Sunday Boys, Manchester’s LGBTQ+ low-voice choir, and The Old Electric, a community arts space in Blackpool with funding from Arts Council England. As the group moved towards independence, we adopted our constitution as an unincorporated association in August 2023, received our first funding in November 2023, and registered as a charity in June 2024.

Objectives and activities

We adopted a model constitution provided by Making Music, with two objectives:

  1. To advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including through the presentation of public events.

  2. To provide facilities which promote the practice or enjoyment of the art of music for recreation or other leisure time occupation and to make them available in the interests of social welfare to individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances or for the public at large with the object of improving conditions of life.

In practice, this means that Electric Pink Voices is a choir for LGBTQ+ people and our allies to sing together, sharing our experiences and performing for the benefit of the community in Blackpool and beyond. As well as making music together, we are focused on the wellbeing of our members, and we strive to create a safe and inclusive space where everyone feels welcome and able to contribute.

Beyond the contribution of our trustees, many of our members volunteer by helping with set-up for rehearsals, promoting the choir, recruiting new members, working on performances and supporting each other practically and emotionally. We are profoundly grateful for their contribution in making Electric Pink Voices a thriving and dynamic community.

Achievements and performance

Our primary achievements over this period have been the result of generous funding from Creative Lives and the National Lottery.

Creative Lives

Our primary source of funding during this period was a grant from the Know Your Neighbourhood Fund, a package of UK Government funding designed to widen participation in volunteering and tackle loneliness in 27 disadvantaged areas across England.

Working partnership with Blackpool Central Library and Leo&Hyde, an arts organisation, the focus of the project was to tell queer Blackpool stories:

As part of the project, we are also able to begin to build links with other LGBTQ+ choirs. In December 2023, we joined the Sunday Boys for their concert at Manchester Cathedral, and in February 2024, we took part in a performance at Chester Storyhouse alongside queer choirs from Chester and Liverpool. Through the project, we partnered with The Old Electric, who offered us free rehearsal space. Funding from Creative Lives also allowed us to focus on the recruitment of new members and it supported our ongoing programme of rehearsals, enabling us to offer access to the choir free of charge.

National Lottery

Towards the end of this period, we were successful in gaining two years of funding from the National Lottery. As with our Creative Lives funding, this enables us to offer participation in Electric Pink Voices at no cost to members. For this project, we are working closely with local arts organisation Aunty Social to offer queer-themed film nights. During 2025, we will be working towards a sing-a-long performance of the Little Mermaid as part of Blackpool Film Festival, hosted by the Backlot Cinema.

Other projects

During 2024, we were invited to participate in Voices Weaving, a project funded by Arts Council England to co-create songs for choirs and vocal collectives, revealing community stories through the joy of singing together. Led by composer Michael Betteridge and producer Holly Hunter, the project culminated in the recording of a new work with text written by mandla, a Zimbabwean-born, agender and queer writer and performer. The resulting music video, built of floating seeds , was launched in the spring of 2025.

Local performances

In February 2024, we were part of the launch event for Blackpool Council’s Be Who You Want To Be action plan, performing on the stage at The Flying Handbag.

In the run up to Blackpool Pride in June 2024, we were able to offer members a tour of Showtown and we performed a pop-up gig at the venue. Supported by Blackpool Transport Services Limited, we participated in the Pride parade, travelling in a vintage open-top bus. We performed on the event’s mainstage, and also opened the festivities for the following day’s community pride street party hosted by the Mardi Gras Hotel and Bar.

In July 2024, we performed in the Tent at the Lowther Pavilion Theatre and Gardens, offering an evening of music and a flower crown making workshop to celebrate the life of Marsha P Johnson. We reached a new audience including local residents and Blackpool’s LGBTQ+ community support organisations.

As the culmination of our partnership with The Old Electric, we performed in the alternative Christmas cabaret in December 2024. The same month, we also participated in the community Christmas event at the Lowther Pavilion.

And at the beginning of April 2025, Electric Pink Voices was invited to perform as part of the Big SleepOut, a fundraising event organised by local youth homeless charity, Streetlife. Several choir members also slept out as part of the event, raising money for the charity’s work.

Electric Pink Voices builds people’s skills in singing, and also has a profoundly positive effect on their wellbeing. Members actively contributed to the evaluation of our Creative Lives project, sharing the benefits of engaging with the choir. They collectively described overcoming social isolation, growing in self-confidence, establishing their queer identities, making friends and being accepted.

Members tell us that being part of Electric Pink Voices Reasons gives them a sense of community and belonging. Members respond to the challenge of improving their singing and performance skills, and learning new things.

We have grown our membership considerably as we have become more established and increased our reach. We now have 38 members, and for a significant proportion, Electric Pink Voices is the first choir they have joined.

Electric Pink Voices is establishing itself as a key part of Blackpool’s queer and cultural community. We take part in Blackpool Pride, performing on the main stage, and support the Pride weekend community street party organised by the Mardi Gras Hotel and Bar. We attend the local LGBTQ+ forum, and we are included in Blackpool Council’s action plan aimed at revitalising the town’s queer quarter. Our collaborations with local charities and arts organisations allow us to reach new audiences, find new members, and share our joy of singing.

Moving forward, we are strengthening our links with public health leaders in Blackpool, looking to integrate our activities as a service in the town to support work on health inequalities through the NHS Core20PLUS5 approach.

Structure, governance and management

Electric Pink Voices adopted the model constitution developed by Making Music and approved by the Charity Commission, establishing it as an unincorporated association. Our funding from Creative Lives took us over the financial threshold for registration, and we became a registered charity in June 2024.

Our initial trustees were co-opted in order to adopt the constitution, but we moved to formal elections at our first annual general meeting held on 12 March 2024.

The trustees meet on a monthly basis to make collective decisions about the charity’s strategy, governance and finances. The group also regularly discussed the wellbeing of members, risks facing the charity and opportunities for partnership with aligned organisations.

We engage our musical director, Phill Fairhurst, on a freelance basis and the trustees work with him to coordinate the choir’s programme, activities and creative development. Our musical director attends trustees meetings as an observer.

We have an additional volunteer, Natt Hazlewood, who attends committee meetings and supports many of the administrative needs of the charity, including by acting as the choir’s librarian. Trustee positions are elected by members for a period of three years, and current postholders are able to stand for reelection if they wish to continue beyond this period. To ensure continuity and stability in the trustee group, we will be holding early elections for the position of chair in 2025 and treasurer in 2026.

And to support our work and enable the effective governance of our involvement in the Hand in Hand Festival, we are also looking to further expand our trustee group in 2025.

All members are eligible to vote in trustee elections, and elections are held annually to coincide with the charity’s AGM.

Independent examiner’s report To the trustees of Electric pink Voices

I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of Electric Pink Voices for the period ended 5[th] April 2025 which are set out on pages 9 – 16.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the Charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2006 Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent examiner's statement

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or

  2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair view’ which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no further concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1. Accounting policies

The principal accounting policies adopted in the preparation of the financial statements are as follows:

a Basis of preparation

The financial statements of the Charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities Act 2011 and the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS102) (effective 1 January 2019). The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.

The charity commenced operations on 23 November 2023 and was formally registered with the Charity Commission as an unincorporated charity on 24 June 2024. These financial statements cover the entire period from commencement of activities through to the year end of 5 April 2025, and therefore includes transactions prior to formal registration. This is in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) and the Charities Act 2011, which require that accounts reflect the full financial period during which the charity has been operational.

b Preparation of the accounts on a going concern basis

The trustees consider that there are no material uncertainties about the charity’s ability to continue as a going concern.

c Income

Income is recognised when the charity has entitlement to the funds, any performance conditions attached to the item(s) of income have been met, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.

Income from government and other grants, whether ‘capital’ grants or ‘revenue’ grants, is recognised when the charity has entitlement to the funds, any performance conditions attached to the grants have been met, it is probably that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably and is not deferred.

d Fund accounting

Unrestricted funds are available to spend on activities that further any of the purposes of the charity. Restricted funds are donations or grants which the donor has specified are to be solely used for particular areas of the charity’s work of for specific projects being undertaken by the charity.

e Expenditure and irrecoverable VAT

Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to make a payment to a third party, it is probable that settlement will be required and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is classified under the following activity heading:

Irrecoverable VAT is charged as a cost against the activity for which the expenditure was incurred.

f Tangible fixed assets

Individual fixed assets costing £500 or more are capitalised at cost and are depreciated over their estimated useful economic lives on a straight line basis as follows:

g Cash at bank and in hand

h Creditors

i Financial instruments

The charity only has financial assets and financial liabilities of a kind that qualify as basic financial instruments. Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at transaction value and subsequently measured at their settlement value.

The charity is an unincorporated charity, registering with the Charity Commission on 24 June 2024. The registered office address is disclosed on page 1.

6 Trustee remuneration and expenses, and related party transactions

Neither the Board of Trustees nor any persons connected with them received any remuneration. One trustee was reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses totalling £27 during the period for other office costs.

There are no donations or grants from related parties that require disclosure.

No trustee or other person related to the charity had any personal interest in any grant or transaction entered into by the charity during the period.

8 Corporation tax

14 Non-adjusting post balance sheet event

After the reporting date, the charity was notified of two restricted donations, £15,000 and £2,488, which was confirmed on 7 April 2025. Both donations are given to support Electric Pink Voices in their preparation and participation in the Hand in Hand Festival – Blackpool 2027, as well as the £15,000 donation given to support the general activities of the charity such as admin, governance etc. These donations are not reflected in the year-end balance sheet as they were confirmed after 5 April 2025. The donations will be recognised in the accounts for the year ending 5 April 2026.
