L&H Annual Report for Annual Meeting 2026

## **Life and Hope Annual Meeting 22nd April 2026**

## **Trustees Annual Report for activities in 2025**

**Charity Name:** Life and Hope (L&H)

## **Charity registration number: 1208745**

## **Objectives and Activities**

Objectives as defined in the constitution: For the public benefit, the advancement of human rights (as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and subsequent United Nations conventions and declarations) by the prevention of human rights abuse, in Tunisia, by educating and advising those who are vulnerable to being victims of human trafficking, in particular but not exclusively young people and families in poverty.

Life and Hope (L&H) was officially established at a meeting on Wednesday 6th March 2024 at Kallaline School, Tunis, with 6 Trustees: three Tunisian residents and three resident in England.

It has been a quiet year because registering in Tunisia has been a long process, and is still not yet completed. Our application stayed with the Ministry of the Interior for several months, but was eventually released, and the lawyer was then able to begin the preparation of the documents to present to the President’s Office. First everything needed to be translated into Arabic. Then the constitution needed to be re-presented in a format acceptable to the Tunisian system. This then needed to be translated back into English, so the English trustees could know what they were signing. But, at last, we think all the documents are almost all ready to be presented to the President’s Office.

Alongside this process of registering, progress has been made in other areas, notably:

- We applied to the Charity Commission of England and Wales to change our financial year to fit the calendar year (1 January to 31 December), rather than the English tax year.

- In England, the NGO has been registered for Gift Aid. This means that for donors who pay tax in England, any donation they make to L&H can be increased by the value of the tax that would be payable on that donation. So, for example, a gift of £100 becomes £125. The first claim has been made under this scheme and raised an extra £327 for the NGO.

- Tim has further refined the website, including adding a “Giving button”, so that those who can donate to the NGO in £ Sterling, can give online.

- A PayPal account has been opened which was an essential part of being able to install the “Giving button”.

- We have appointed our first worker. Zemorda has agreed to work in a voluntary capacity, with reimbursement of expenses incurred. Her initial roles are: 1. To be the focal point of

contact between L&H and the lawyer, thus relieving Balqis of this task, and giving the lawyer a contact with a single focus. 2. To find a co-working space for L&H so that there is an official office address for the organisation. 3. Handling monies, when necessary, for L&H.

## **Financial Review**

Financially we have benefitted from the support from a number of donors who would like to see this work get off the ground. Thanks to this we have had enough funds to cover our costs to date. Once the work has started, we will need to establish a bigger support base and a greater income. A financial statement is presented as part of the Annual Meeting. As at 5th April 2026 L&H had £2465.38 in the Lloyds Bank account, and £119.52 in the PayPal account

We will need to open a bank account in Tunis, but this will have to wait till we have formally registered as an NGO in Tunisia.

## **Other Issues**

There have been no Safeguarding issues to report this year.

In summary, much progress has been made preparing L&H to begin the work for which the NGO has been established. We hope that the final stage, of registering in Tunisia will be completed without undue delay.

Finally, I would like to thank the Trustees for being willing to take part in this venture. And thanks also to those who have shown an interest and supported the establishment of Life and Hope, including financial support and the creating of a website.
