MOSAF become a registered charity on 12[th] June 2024. It is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).

Aims and Purpose

MOSAF aims to advance the education of the public in the subject of history. This is particularly, but not exclusively, related to the history of enslavement and abolitionism focusing on Deptford.

Objectives and Activities

MOSAF has developed a specialist walking tour of Deptford relating to the historical connections between Deptford and the transatlantic trafficking of enslaved Africans as well as abolitionism. It has also recruited several volunteers to carry out these walking tours.

MOSAF has also shared its research findings with the community engagement officer for the Greater London Authority, Dr Melissa Bennett, as part of a new learning network for community organisations to use.

MOSAF was requested by the Mayor of London’s office to provide feedback on the intended new memorial artwork to commemorate the people enslaved in the Transatlantic trade.

The intended public benefits are that:

• a) residents of Deptford learn more about their shared history whether as people volunteering with MOSAF or attendees on guided walks.

• b) visitors to Deptford learn more about Deptford’s history relating to London’s role as Britain’s first slaving port.

• c) organisations, such as the Mayor of London’s office or local schools, can obtain assistance in learning about London’s history as a slaving port or in obtaining feedback on new memorialisation initiatives.

Key Objectives for 2025

• 1) Continue our walking tours around Deptford

• 2) Publish research on Deptford and enslavement

• 3) Continue to work with the Church of England re: reparatory justice and the history of Deptford

• 4) Provide educational materials and/or walking tours on request

• 5) Find new volunteers and train them to undertake the walks

• 6) Publicise our walking programme

Review of Activities for 2025

• 1) Ade Goode has set up a new website for the charity.

• 2) MOSAF held a planning meeting on March 15[th] to map out our strategy.

• 3) MOSAF have held meetings with Reverend Jane Petrie of St Nicholas’ Church to discuss how we can work together in the future. Rev. Petrie gave as a tour of the interior of the church.

• 4) MOSAF have undertaken our programme of walking tours including special walks for Channing School and UCL.

• 5) Helen Paul wrote an article entitled ‘The Grit in the Oyster: Deptford, Enslavement, and the Challenges of Memorialisation’ which was published by the London Journal as part of a special issue. Link: https://doi.org/10.1080/03058034.2025.2459988

• 6) Helen Paul and Rev Jane Petrie were invited to the Diocese of Southwark’s Truth Telling in Sacred Spaces event to give two talks. This was by invitation from Bishop Rosemary Mallett (Croydon). HP and JP also met Weisi Dennis, the Racial Justice Development Officer (Diocese of Southwark) to plan the event.

• 7) Helen Paul gave a walking tour and training session to a Thames Festival Trust Lost & Found project. The project aimed to support eight heritage trainees with a programme of training and events at the Creekside Discovery Centre Deptford.

• 8) Helen Paul was interviewed about MOSAF Deptford’s work as part of UCL’s Heritage podcast.

Future Plans

We aim to apply for a small funding grant and to work with Carolina Lio, Looking Forward, in order to identify a suitable funder.

We wish to set up Gift Aid for our walking tours and donations.

We wish to review our policies to make sure that they are up to date.

Financial Review

The financial statements show a net incoming resources of £1707.34.

Our principal source of income is payment for our walking tours. However, we have also received a number of generous donations.

Our tours are conducted by volunteers who are not paid. Our trustees are not paid. We also have not covered expenses for volunteers or trustees.

Insurance

We are covered by the insurance policies of the British Association for Local History due to membership of the BALH.
