Shrewsbury Steam Trust Annual report to 31/12/2024
This year has been a difficult one for the Shrewsbury Steam Trust.
We have been unable to hold any open days whilst there has been progress towards obtaining a lease for the buildings with the council. There have also been ongoing investigations into concerns over the structural stability of the chimney which the council have been investigating.
We have thus had only some income from Trust supporters, but next year, as a result of not having open days benefiting the supporters, we intend to waive supporter’s fees for one year.
We have used social media and other direct contact to keep supporters and the public aware on progress towards full re-opening (i.e. the usual 5 or 6 open days each year.
We have tried to use the downtime to enhance future visitor’s experience, and have made the station available, welcoming occasional visitors on days when volunteers are present to show them round and explain the history and workings of the station.
Volunteers are still showing enthusiasm for the work that they do, despite our current difficulties.
Our primary expenditure has been on insurance costs to mainly cover volunteer’s working days. Other costs have been incurred upgrading the grounds, sheds, garden and some tools.
We look forward to next year in the hope that progress on signing the lease will be forthcoming and that we can then return to more regular open days with the engines running under steam.
