TRUSTEE RESPONSIBILITIES:
The trustees working within the guldance issued by the Charlty Commi8slon and 8ccordin8 to thè CIO
constitution. The minimum number of trustees is three, and at e8ch annual gener81 meeting of Welsh
C8mer8ta a thlrd of all the tru8tee$ retlre by rotation and the members glect or re-elect new trustees.
The trustees receive no remuneration and work to further the oblectlves of the choir. Trustees are re-Imburs8d
for necessary expenditure, usually lor admin sundries most conveniently purchased individually.

Overall summary of activlty
The Welsh Camerata is a mlxed choir of 25-30 singers, performing predomlnantly early European music lie Irom
14" to 18° centuries) in public concerts in Cardlff. Its main alm is to develop awareness of important but
lesser-known repeitoire. Led by a professional Director and rn&n8ged by a committee based around the CIO
trustees, it is funded from member subscriptions, ticket sales, paid engagements, corporate funding and
gr8nts.
The choir 8im8 to inform and develop th8 knowledge of its mefflbers and the gener81 public Sn appreciation ol
SLAng 88rly music, repertoire which is less frequently pertormed and often new to slngers and audience alike.
Members of the choir gain a number of b8nefits through their involvement.. The health benefits of choral
singing, both physical and psychological, are generally acknowledged. There is likewis8 8 social benefit from
being p8rt of 8 group, with a small number of singers, working together to achieve high standards of
performance and take slgniflcant Indlvidual responslblllty. Members also have the opportunity to galn
knowledge and skllls from the director, who Is a hlghly skllled and knowledgeable professional muslclan.
Welsh Cam8r3ta generally prepares and perform8 8t least three concerts a year coinciding with the academic
terms. These are USLJ811y presented in churches in the South Waleslcardiff area, wlth the rehearsal and
performanee venues benefitting from Income derived from the hlrlng of space as well as opportunitles for
communities to come together. In addition, when the choir n8ed8 to engage professional period instrument
musicians or voc81 soloists it aims to provid8 opportunities for emerging artists to gain 6xperi8nee and
exposure.

Trustees, Report
Welsh Camerata started this 12-month period with a new Director, following the retirement ol the founding
director, Andrew Wilson-Dickson, after 20 years. After Interviewing candidates with a variety of experience, we
were fortunate in engaging Frederick Brown, Chorus Master of the Welsh National Opera, who also brings a
wealth of other operatic. orchestr81. keyboard and voc81 experience to th8 ro19. We are pl8ased that Andrew
Wilson-Dickson has continued his links with the choir and has been supportive in lending instruments and
raking occasional instrumental paTts In concerts.
In this 2024-25 season Welsh Camerata performed 3 concerts, one per term..
'A Christm8$ in W818s and Europe, mixed repertoire from the Renaissance and Baroque eras
interspersed with traditional Welsh plygain c8rols sung by small groups of choristers.
The spring term concert, Class of 7685, featured music by the three major composers born in that
auspicious year. This included Sc8rlatti's St8b8t Mater, which really opened a lot of eyes to this unjustly
neglected work, 88ch and Hand8lwere the othertwo composers.
The summer concert, Music81 Friendship5, featured works by 8yrd, Tallis 8nd De Nonte. They had in
common th8ir Catholic faith, which in Reforrnation times h8d to be kept secret.
The cholr used different churches in the Cardiff area and experSmented with changing the day and time of
concerts- the most notable beSn8 trying a late Sunday afternoon concert whlch seemed to work well for
performers and 8udience alike.
Wlth the provider of the Welsh Camerata webslre relocating and retiring from the cholr, the trustees
investigated varlous options 8nd decided to create a new website using the Making Nusic Platform. The one-off
costs for setting thi5 up are includ8d in the Making Music entry in the accounts but the benelits from the new
site will not be seen until the 2025-26 year. We ar8 V8ry grateful to the previous wabmaster lor creating and
managing the Welsh Camerata's slie for the choir's flr5t 20 years.
This year was the first year of the Welsh Camerat8's existence as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation which
has enabled the claiming of Gift Aid. This has been beneficial in helping to fund instrumentalists and to
mitig8te some of the effects of Increasin8 venue hire costs.
In order to satisfy the more stringent banking conditions necessary for Ch8rities, the Welsh C8merata changed
its bank and now is able to receive modest interest on any reserveg.
Welsh Carnerata is also gratelul for the donation made by Admiral Insur8ric8 which employs one of the choir
members.
The accounts show a more favourable positlon compared to the prevlous year and, when it is deerned that this
is sust8in8ble, the choir will be able to produce more adventurous programming involving more
instrumentalists, which in turn can be expected to increase audiences, membership and general interest.

Welsh Camerata does not mak8 grants to other groups or individuals. using its funding to enhance its
own ch8rlt8ble objectlves.

expenditure eg administratlon sundries
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accountlng records that dlsclose with reasonable accuracy at
any time the financial position of the charity and enable Ihem to ensure that the financial 8t8tement5 comply
with the Charilies Act 2011, the Charlty (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions ol the
trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonabl8
steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularitles.
