Organisational Update: Transition to CIO Status

In 2024, the Shimbwe Development Trust successfully transitioned to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) status. This major change significantly enhances the charity’s governance and operational capacity:

Separate Legal Identity: The CIO is a distinct legal entity, allowing the charity to own property and enter contracts in its own name. This simplifies operational tasks such as opening a bank account.

Improved Banking Capabilities: This transition was necessary partly due to the limited capabilities of previous bank accounts, which was unable to accept donations by cheque and cash donations from fundraising efforts. The new status will greatly expand opportunities when exploring different fundraising avenues.

Additionally, our previous banking facilities did not support international payments or the receipt of non-digital contributions, which further limited financial activity during this time.
