This report covers the period from the formation of the Charitable Incorporated
Organisation (CIO) being the British Hydrological Society (charity number 1208263)
on 15 May 2024 until the end of the following reporting year on 30 June 2025. The
CIO was dormant until the old charity (charty number 327488) was closed on 20
November 2024 when the funds transferred to the CIO.

Objects
The objects of the BHS are.. For the public benefit to adyance
education and research in both the scientific and the applied
aspects of hydrology by promoting good practice in hydrology and
by fostering the involvement of rts members in activities directed at
promoting, advancing, and building esteem of hydrology.
Powers
The CIO has power to do anything which is calculated to further its
object or is conducive or incidentsl to doing so. In particular, the
CIO'S powers include power to-
{a) Borrow money and to charge the whole or any parl of its
property as security for the repaymenl of the money borrowed. The
CIO must compty as appropriate with sections 124 and 125 of the
Charities Act 2011 rf it wishes to mortgage land.
Ib} Buy. take on lease or in exchange, hire or otherwise acquire
any property and lo maintain and equip it for use.
(cl Sell, lease or otherwise dispose of all or any part of the propety
belonging lo the CIO. In exercising this power, the CIO must
comply as appropriate with sections 117 and 119-123 of tho
Charities Act 2011.

Main activities undertaken by the BHS to meet the objects of the
Society:
Hold regular meetings including joint meetings with olher
organisations, groups and societies to discuss hydrological
subjects.
Publish and distribute the Circulation newsletter to all Society
members to disseminate information relating lo both national
and internatlonal activities and developments in the field of
hydrology.
Promote the publication of hydrological literature.
Raise awareness of hydrological adivities and issues via social
media.
Award travel grants to earty career hydrologists to attend
COnferen￿S and meetings.
Foster, and co-operate in, inter-disciplinary activities with other
national and international organisations with related interests.
Promote the formation of regional and local seth'ons of the
Society.
Undertake all such other lawful activities as shall fvrther the

The Trustees, in exercising their powers and duties, have complied
with their dufy to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit
published by the Charity Commission.
In March 2025, a Iravel grant of £500 was awarded lo a Trustee to
attend an internation81 conference. The trustee was an early career
hydrologist and their attendance conformed entirely with the
charitable purpose of the Society.

Travel Grants
The BHS Travel Grants are a scheme to assist attendan￿ at
conferences, symp05ia and workshops to foster the involvemenl of
BHS members in activities directed at promoting, advancing, and
building esleem of hydrology.
The scheme primarily applies to intemational travel, and only
exceptionally travel within the UK
Exeter Fund

The Exeter Fund {EF) is an endowment arising from surplus money
generated by the 1st Scientific Assembly of Ihe Intemational
Association of Hydrologlcal Sciences IIAHS) held at Exeler
University in 1982.
The EF was initially administered by the Royal Society, before
being transferred to BHS in 1991. 11 provides grants lo assist
attendance at biennial IAHS Scienttfic Assemblies and International
Union of Geodesy and Geophysics IIUGG) General Assemblres
held outside the UK. and to encourage early career scientists to
become involved with IAHS as an Association.
On occasion, il may be used to support other activitiès aimed at
early career hydrologists.

The Society is dependent upon the efforts of unpaid Members
throughout its stiuclure for rts governance and for most of its
activities.
The administratNe fvjnctions are provided by The Institution of Civil
Engineers {at a discounled cost rate to BHS). The UK Centre for
Ecology and Hydrology supports the Society's quarterly newsletter
{Circulation). Other bodies support the Society by sponsoring
conferences and symposia.
Many organisations encourage Iheir employees to be involved in
the Society, e.g. by joining the Main Committee, and support this in
terms of providing time andlor reimbursement of expènses.

Website
The websrte continues to provide an important means of
disseminating information about the Society and current
hydrological issues to members and anyone else interested. It
gives information about the Society's activities, awards. and
administration. The calendar of national and regional meetings and
events includes joint meetings and relevant international évents
organised by others.
The site also includes information for members considering roLrtes
to chartered status with other institutions and general information
on careers and sources of hydrological data. The Society publishes
a listing of hydrological cOnsu￿antS and provides space to advertise
hydrology-related jobs.
There are also links to the BHS Mail base (membeis mailing list),
outputs from past meetings, consuttation responses, BHS
publications, national current and historic hydrological data
holdings.

The British Hydrological Society (charty number 327488) was
closed on 20 November 2024 and the funds transferred to the
Charity Incorporated Organisation (CIO), being the British
Hydrological Society (charity number 1208263).
On 20 November 2024, the General Accumulated Fund opened
wilh £76,057. At 30 June 2025. it stood at £88,929. The increase
was mainly due to the subscriptions that generally arrive in the first
part of the calendar year. The main outgoings were for
communications (newsletter and webstte, £9,769). travel awards
(£1,600) and management costs (£6,230).
On 30 June 2025, the Exeter Fund stood at £91,466.

The truslees have reviewed the reserves of the charity. The
trustees consider it prudent lo keep unrestncted reserves at levels
which ensure that there are sufficient funds to meet the needs of
current and future activities which includes under-writing the costs
of large symposia which could leave the Society with considerable
liabilitses in the event of enforced last-minute cancellation.
The activities of the Society are otherwise largely regular and
predictable in the medium to long term. Reserves can therefore be
relied upon to act as contingency in the event of income flows being
disrupted or the late cancellationlfailure of such major events.

l. Responslbllities of the Committee
The Comrnittee is responslble for maintaining proper accounts'ng records which disclose with
reasonable accurnty at any time the financial position of the Society an(1 take reasonable steps for the
prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. In preparing the financial statements the
Committee are required to...

2. Status
British Hydrologlcal Society is a charf(able incorporated organisation registered with the Charity
Commission in England and Wales Icharr(y number 12082631. The Chartty is governed by its Trust
Deed. The principal office is One Great George Street, Westminster, London, SWIP 3AA.
3. Accountin8 Policies
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Flnancial Reporring Standard 102
(effèctive l January 2019IIFRS 1021, the Companies Act 2006 and the requirements of the Statement
of Recommended Practice1SORPI appSicable to charities preparing their accounts in atcordance with
the Financial Repothng Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland IFRS 102) (effective I
January 2019IICharitles SORP FRS 1021.
The British Hydrological Society meets the (Jefinition of a public benefit entity under. FRS 102. Assets
and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or tran5acbon value unless othernise stated in
the relevant accounting policy notelsl.
There are no material uncertainties about the charity's ability to COn￿nUe. and so the going concern
basis of accounting has been adopted.
The financial statements are presented in Pounds Sterling and are rounded to the nearest pound.
al Incoming Resources
All income, including subscriptions and investment Income is accounted for when received. except in
the case of 5ubscripllons which are Specilical￿ stated to be in ￿spect of an ensuin8 accounting period.
No credit is taken for subscriptions unpaid at the balance sheet date.
bl Resources expended
Expenditure is recognised when there is a legal or constructive obligation to trdnsfer resources to
third party, settlement is probablè, and the amunt can be reliably estimated.
M05t of the Society's expenditure relates to direct charitable eKpenditure. Fund-raising and publictty
cost5 are not applicable, and the management and administration was provided by The Institution of
Civil Engineers at a cost of £5,230.34.
The Institution of Civil Engineers provkdes meeting room hire to the Society as part of the agreed
package of management and administrdtion 5eThices. The Society is only charged for room hire if the

allocation is exceeded in any calendar year Iwith such charges belng discounted from the Institution's
standard rates).

Grants are made to per50n5 and institutions in furtherance of the Society's objects.
d) Investments
Investments am stated at market value on the date of these financial statements. Income from
investments is included in the accounts when due to be received and interest on bank deposil is
accounted for on an accruals basis. Realised gains/losse5 on inve5tment5 501d are calculated on their
original cost.
e} Financial instruments
The Charity only has fi"narbcial instruments of a kind that qualfy as basic financial instruments. The
Charitres financial instruments are initially retognised at transaction value and subsequently measured
at their Settlement value.
fj Credltors
C￿d110rS are ￿COgnised when a present legal or constructive obligation exists at the balance sheet
date as a result of a past event, it is probable that a transfer Of economic beneffts will be required to
settle the obllgation, and the amount can be e5ts'mated ￿liably. Creditor5 are reco8nised at their
settlement value.
81 Fund accountin8
The charitable company maintains three types of funds:
General unrestricted funds are those which can be used in actordance with the Society's charitable
objects at the discretion of the Trustees.
Restricted funds are funds which are to be used in accordance with specific restrictions imposed by
donor5 or which have been ￿lse(l by the charity for particular purposes. The aim and use of the
restricted fund5 is set out in the notes to the financial statements.
Endowment funds are funds held on trust forthe purpose of allocating travel grants to UK Hydrologists
who wish to attend the International Association of Hydrological Sciences events, normally held every
2 years. and on occasion other achvthes to support early career hydrologists.
