## **FIRST TRUSTEES REPORT TO THE CHARITY COMMISSION – MARCH 2025**
## The purposes of the charity
To relieve the needs of those diagnosed with kidney cancer through:
a: Providing care packs containing essential items and comfort cushions for use following major surgery or during treatment;
b: Signposting to appropriate and essential support and information;
c: In such other ways as the trustees may determine.
To assist in the treatment and care of persons suffering from kidney cancer, by the provision of free care bags and Comfort Cushions following diagnosis, and any subsequent treatment.
To promote and protect the physical and mental health of sufferers of kidney cancer in England, Scotland and Wales through the provision of free care bags, also containing essential support information, and Comfort Cushions for use following major surgery and during any subsequent treatment pathway.
To relieve sickness and to preserve the health of the patients in hospitals throughout England, Scotland and Wales by providing or assisting in the provision of care packs containing essential items for hospital admission, or during the treatment pathway. This service is not provided by the NHS.
## Current Positon
Flutter- Bringing a little brightness to kidney cancer patients, registered charity number 1208259 has moved into its first premises, a rental unit at 88 Rectory Lane, Chelmsford, Essex, CM1 1RF. The tenancy started on the 6th December 2024.
This has significantly improved the operation of our small charity, enabling safe and secure storage, and overall effective running of the charity day to day.
Furthermore, this has provided a suitable area for preparation of the care bags and Comfort Cushions, including all essential storage.
It means that our volunteers from local communities can come together with a renewed sense of purpose and value. This includes our much-valued sewing bees, who sew the cushion covers and care bags. They benefit enormously from their volunteering activities, stating it improves their wellbeing and mental health.
Many of our volunteers reside in rural communities, and some with disabilities, and their involvement with Flutter has been instrumental in maintaining their overall health. Flutter is now able to receive new volunteers and visitors. This in turn provides further opportunity to raise awareness of kidney cancer and generates increased support and awareness of our charity.
Since moving into our new premises, we have found many visitors return to Flutter and have become involved in the preparation of our care bags and comfort cushions.
Many patients are affected severely by the cost-of-living crisis, as their diagnosis makes it difficult to work during treatment. Care bags are often referred to as a lifeline for those unable to afford basic essentials upon admission to hospital. Flutter is making a difference to many patients in ways not earlier foreseen.
Our new premises enabled us to hold a Flutter launch event, which was very successful, and well attended by volunteers, and hospital staff.
Our new premises has meant that we have been able to appoint an Ambassador to the charity, who is a specialist consultant surgeon in kidney cancer at Chelmsford and Southend hospital.
Our volunteers are now increasing as we have space to invite the much-needed help to Flutter.
Both patients and staff are incredibly grateful to our small charity, and this is demonstrated in the emails that we receive thanking Flutter.
Having premises to operate Flutter from has been life changing. Previously every aspect of the work undertaken by Flutter, including all storage, preparation, packing of the individual care bags and comfort cushions, as well as the delivery box packing was managed at the home address of the founder. This had become incredibly challenging in so many ways.
To now be able to operate efficiently and safely in our own premises as a newly formed charity has ensured a safer and more productive working environment, and a place where our volunteers can come together for a cup of tea and cake, and feel valued, knowing that they are giving their time to benefit others, who have just received the life changing diagnosis of kidney cancer.
On a personal level, from the many conversations that take place, we know that Flutter has significantly contributed to the mental wellbeing of our volunteers, and in addition that they enjoy the time that they spend at Flutter.
Since the project commenced, we have distributed 2130 Care Bags and Comfort Cushions to kidney cancer patients.
Since becoming a registered charity this has enabled Flutter to apply for funding grants, some of which have been successful and this has been hugely impactive on the great work
that our small charity undertakes in order to continue bringing a little brightness to kidney cancer patients.
Each grant is gratefully received, enabling Flutter to purchase and forward plan essential purchases of products for the care bags, fabric, cushion inserts, printing, rental costs and delivery fees to the 33 hospitals that to date have received care bags and comfort cushions to continue bringing a little brightness to kidney cancer patients. This remains essential as there is limited support and awareness for patients affected by this type of cancer.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity
("the Trust") for the year ended.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity trustees of the Trust, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts
in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ("Ihe Act")-
I report in respect of my examination of the Trusts accounts carried out under section 145
