## **Chairman’s Report Of The Trustees** 

**Oldham Boxing & Personal Development Centre (OBPDC) Reporting Period: May 1st 2024 – April 30th 2025** 

## **Introduction** 

This year has been another highly transformative period for Oldham Boxing & Personal Development Centre (OBPDC), marked most notably by significant progress towards our ambitious refurbishment project. Despite the inevitable disruption caused by preparation and temporary relocation, the Centre has experienced one of its busiest and most productive years to date. 

Alongside extensive planning work—submitting funding bids, engaging with funders, and building support both locally and beyond Oldham—we have continued to deliver high-quality boxing and personal development activities. Throughout this period, Eric and the coaching team ensured that the boxing gym remained fully operational, allowing members of all ages and abilities to continue benefiting from our services.Refurbishment works officially commenced on 16 December 2024. While operating from temporary venues at Mahdlo Youth Zone and Positive Steps, we successfully delivered the following key achievements: 

- Delivered three boxing shows (May, June, and November), with notable success both in and out of the ring 

- Successfully registered as a charity on 9 May 2024, with invaluable support from Anthony Collins Solicitors 

- Recruited new trustees and board members 

- Achieved the Quality in Action Award from Action Oldham 

- Hosted the Community Ownership Team from the Ministry of Levelling Up

## **Governance** 

In May 2024, OBPDC formally became a registered charity. This milestone was accompanied by the appointment of new trustees, including Mark Bradley and Eaton Fallows. Mark, who has long been a coach at the club, has made a valuable transition into his role as trustee, bringing both operational insight and strategic commitment to the Board. 

## **Projects and Programmes** 

## **The Refurbishment Project** 

The £1.2 million refurbishment project has understandably been a central focus throughout the year. Construction began in December 2024, marking a major step forward in the Centre’s long-term sustainability and development. 

We are extremely grateful to our neighbouring organisations, Positive Steps and Mahdlo Youth Zone, who generously accommodated us during this period. Their support ensured minimal disruption to our activities and allowed us to continue delivering services to the community throughout the works.

Despite ongoing challenges linked to the cost-of-living crisis, OBPDC has continued to deliver vital services to children, young people, and adults across Oldham. The year included a wide range of impactful projects, including: 

- **We Move** – Greater Manchester Police mentoring project 

- **Mahdlo Satellite Gym** 

- **Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE)** Boxing Project 

- **HAF Programme** – Holiday activities with healthy meals for children 

- **Sport England Girls Only Project** , targeting teenage girls 

- **KO Hate** sessions focused on hate crime and community cohesion 

- **Box About** project in partnership with Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council 

- Multiple **boxing events and competitions**

## **Project Highlights** 

Despite the added pressures of the refurbishment, we continued to deliver a broad portfolio of programmes. The We Move Project, a pioneering GMP-led mentoring initiative, operated from our temporary gym at Mahdlo Youth Zone, alongside our core youth and holiday provision. 

With Sport England’s support, we delivered the Girls Only Project, successfully engaging teenage girls who may otherwise face barriers to participation in sport. Our commitment to tackling hate crime and promoting cohesion continued through the KO Hate Project, while the DofE Box-a-Bout Project reinforced positive values, discipline, and personal development.

## **Boxing Performance and Development** 

OBPDC continues to support an active competitive boxing squad of approximately 20 boxers, representing a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds and including a growing number of female athletes. 

This year’s standout success has once again been Kyle Tullin, who achieved an exceptional series of accomplishments: 

- Named Royal Navy Young Sportsman of the Year 

- Awarded Marine of the Year 

- Won two gold medals and one silver medal internationally 

- Selected to join the Olympic squad 

Kyle’s success reflects the strength of our coaching philosophy and development pathway, which consistently produces high-performing athletes. 

Close behind is Saul Griffith, who won the National Championships in March 2025 and proudly earned his first England vest, further reinforcing the quality of our competitive programme.

## **Participation and Community Impact** 

Personal development remains central to OBPDC’s mission. Alongside competitive boxing, our recreational boxing programme continues to thrive, with four weekly sessions, including one female-only session.Attendance across both our main gym and the Mahdlo Youth Zone satellite gym reaches hundreds of participants each week. We also deliver daytime alternative provision for young people not currently in school, a service we aim to expand further in the coming year.

## **Operational Overview** 

Despite the scale of our activity, OBPDC remains a small organisation. We currently operate with one full-time and one part-time administrator, supported by a dedicated team of sessional staff and volunteers. 

While our success in the boxing ring is highly visible, the Trustees remain firmly committed to OBPDC’s wider purpose: supporting individuals of all ages with mental health challenges, addiction issues, employability, and personal development. We are an inclusive organisation that turns no one away and embraces people of all backgrounds, faiths, and communities. 

This has been a year of exceptional progress, resilience, and pride for Oldham Boxing & Personal Development Centre. With the refurbishment now underway and our programmes continuing to grow, we look forward with confidence to an even stronger year ahead.
