Annual Report 2024
Music as Therapy (Reg. Charity No. 1070760) was originally formed under a Trust Deed dated 17[th] June 1998 and achieved charitable status on 29[th] July 1998. In 2021 the charity’s Trustees approved the decision to contemporise its governance by changing its structure to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), a process which took 3 years to complete. It is of note that the Trustees also welcomed the enhanced legal status a CIO provides to enable better Trustee protection through limited liability.
The ultimate governance vision was that Music as Therapy would merge with Music as Therapy International (CIO) in 2025, taking on all assets and activities (including all partnerships, contracts and personnel linked to the delivery of activities).
To work towards this, the key objective for the CIO in 2024 was governance focused with an initial milestone being the registration of the CIO Music as Therapy International (Reg. Charity No. 10208086) with the Charity Commission on 1[st] May 2024.
The Trustees met throughout 2024 to monitor progress towards the CIO taking on the responsibilities of the registered charity, to ensure the structural change to a CIO would guarantee the continued fulfilment of the activities of Music as Therapy, support future strategic plans and maintain its effective operations in 2025.
The Objects for which the CIO was established for the benefit of the public were defined as follows:
- 1) To support and enhance good health and to promote social inclusion for the public benefit by offering inclusive opportunities to prevent [or reduce the likelihood of] people from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society through:
a) The targeted use of music, with particular emphasis on strengthening opportunities for social engagement;
b) The provision of training, resources and support for individuals working in the healthcare, education and social care sectors; and
c) The advancement of the education of the public concerning music therapy and the targeted use of music within care.
For the purpose of this clause ‘socially excluded’ means being excluded from society, or parts of society, as a result of disability, illness or social injustice.
- 2) Such other exclusively charitable purposes according to the law of England and Wales as the trustees of the charity may in their absolute discretion determine.
By the end of the year, the CIO was ready to receive all assets and to take over the operations of Music as Therapy and, in doing so, begin fulfilling its Objects and effecting Public Benefit from 1[st] January 2025. A new
bank account with CAF Bank had been agreed (due to be opened on 2[nd] January 2025). However, in 2024 the CIO did not receive any income nor incur any expenditure, as shown in the accompanying Annual Accounts. All costs relating to the establishment of the CIO and preparations for the merger in this financial period were administered through Music as Therapy (Reg. charity no. 1070760) and reported to the Charity Commission through the charity’s separate Annual Report and Accounts on 22[nd] May 2025.
