TCUK was first registered as a charity in 1988. In 2023 Members decided to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) with a new constitution given legislative and other changes that had taken place over time. The new TCUK CIO was registered by the Charity Commission on 30 April 2024. All assets and liabilities of the old TCUK were approved to be transferred to the new TCUK CIO at a general meeting of members on 28 September 2024. However, as we are essentially the same organisation, this TAR and Annual Accounts cover the full financial year 2024-25. This is our first Trustees Annual Report since conversion to a CIO.

All Trustees give their time voluntarily and can receive reasonable expenses incurred in the course of their duties but do not receive any remuneration. Trustees generally do not to claim expenses, other than where they have purchased specific materials/items for events, or paid fees to artists and suppliers on behalf of the Society by prior agreement with the Board or its Officers.

TCUK has a membership that elects one-third of the Board of Trustees each year after the first AGM. Details of how to become a member are published on our website.

Summary of the main TCUK: TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT, FIRST AGM, 11 OCTOBER 2025 achievements of the charity during the year Thank you all for taking the time to read this report. In this report, I aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the Centre’s activities and the financial challenges that we have encountered between during the year. We are saddened by the passing of three stalwarts of The Tagore Centre UK early in 2025. Dr Amal Chowdhury was a chairman of The Tagore Centre UK during a very turbulent time of its history. His enthusiastic fund raising from across the world and his skilled, analytical study of the constitution helped the centre navigate its way through troubled times. Mrs Arundhuti Biswas joined the Tagore Centre UK soon after its foundation and remained an active and dedicated member until the last days of her life. She served as Vice Chair, and as Cultural Secretary for many years. She was a key instigator of The Tagore Centre UK’s flagship feature, the Sunday Events. Dr Devi Kundu, one of the founder members of The Centre and a longtime executive committee member, dedicated herself to teaching music and Bengali classes at the centre. She was also a key event organiser, working tirelessly alongside other volunteers to lead major initiatives. We feel their loss. Following the AGM last year, we very reluctantly accepted the resignation of Mr Sunith Lahiri, our previous Charman, Mr Sanjay Dasgupta our Vice Chairman, Mrs Srabantika Dasgupta our Cultural Secretary, Mr Suvra Bhattacharya and Mrs Sunrita Dhar- Bhattacharya. They all helped keep us afloat during the very difficult time following our departure from Alexandra Park Library. We wish them well for the future. Last year, we obtained your permission to convert to a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation). This work has been completed. We have kept the same name but obtained a new Charity Registration Number and the Constitution has been updated to comply with Charity Commission’s recommendations. This was a laborious and time-consuming process. We now have stricter procedures in place for appointing new Trustees and maintaining records – again in accordance with recommendations by the Charity Commission. We have also successfully claimed Gift Aid when due. We thank Atulkumar Patel for his knowledge and expertise in such matters as without his help and constant vigilance we would not have succeeded. Throughout the year, The Tagore Centre UK continued to organise a range of events designed to engage with both our members and the wider community and the general public. Rabindrajayanti in Gordon Square, Family Fun Day, Noboborsho, talk by Dr Barid Bhattacharya accompanied by musical performance by Dr Sunit Ghatak were all well-received. We also held a memorial event for Dr William Radice and presented the major production, Legends of Bengal. Our collaboration with SOAS during the memorial for Dr William Radice is anticipated to yield benefits in the future, strengthening our partnerships and enhancing our cultural offerings. Legends of Bengal, held at The Bhavan Centre, was our major event. It was significant in extending our reach to a broader audience. It served as a reminder to the public that, despite ongoing spatial challenges, The Tagore Centre UK remains active and committed to its mission. It was a sell-out

event but still operated at a loss. Nevertheless, this event taught us valuable lessons and provided an opportunity to reconnect with the community and involve younger volunteers. Regrettably, it should be noted that most of our events resulted in a financial loss. The sole exception was Rabindrajayanti in Gordon Square, which succeeded due to the full sponsorship provided by our Vice Chairperson, Dr Sipra Adhya. I thank Sipra for her enthusiasm and her generosity. My heartfelt thanks also to Mrs Mimi Ray who is our Treasurer and has prepared the accounts attached. She continues to shoulder greater responsibilities as and when needed. My very grateful thanks also to Mr Biddyut Kumar Saha, our fellow Trustee, who organises the refreshments at our events. He is also the Go to person for setting up the system and projector whenever needed. We have an enthusiastic and committed team of Trustees strengthened by two new members appointed recently who I am delighted to welcome Mrs Soumi Sen, who has organised today’s entertainment, and Dr Sabarna (Raka) Mukhopadhyay, who spearheaded both the Dr William Radice Memorial and Legends of Bengal and has galvanised us into action, leading our efforts in connectivity and future planning. My very grateful thanks to all our Trustees and volunteers. I am pleased to report that the outlook for the Tagore Centre is positive. We have initiated a book drive to enrich the Tagore collection at Holborn Library. We have also started a new membership band – a life membership for a single person for £200 and for a couple for £300. However, it is important to inform you that our traditional Sunday events, which have long been a hallmark of The Tagore Centre UK, will be discontinued unless an exceptional opportunity arises. Our current resources simply do not allow us to continue with these events. Despite this, we are actively exploring alternative cultural and heritage initiatives and, resources permitting, will continue to promote Tagore’s message through other avenues. I encourage everyone to stay connected with TCUK through our social media channels - our website, Facebook, and Instagram - and to share information about our activities with friends and family. Please ensure you read communications from Sandra, our Administrator, and make a note of upcoming events in your diaries, as we are unable to contact everyone individually regarding new events. To support The Tagore Centre UK, I urge all members to consider becoming Life Members, or to set up standing orders for their membership fees if they have not already done so. Our members are our greatest strength. I hope that you will enjoy today’s agenda, which includes official business, entertainment, and food, all thoughtfully organised by our Trustees. Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves

TCUK currently has £18,510 in unrestricted reserves as at 31/3/25. Reserves are presently maintained as a risk-buffer and for cash-flow management. Our investment policy going forward is simply to invest some of this in an interest-bearing savings account with our bank.
