**Structure, governance and management**

Alley Cats and Kittens is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, registered with the Charity Commission on 19th April 2024.

## **Objectives and activities**

The purposes of the Charity are, for the benefit of the public:

- To relieve the suffering of cats and kittens in need of care and attention in Southport and surrounding areas by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for such animals and by finding new and suitable homes for cats and kittens.

- To educate the public in matters pertaining to animal welfare in general and the prevention of cruelty and suffering among cats and kittens.

The charity is run entirely by volunteers and has no staff or property which keeps overheads to a minimum.

Cats come into our care from a variety of sources – for example strays, unwanted, abandoned, evictions, bereavement and vet referrals. If we are unable to accept a cat, advice and alternative suggestions are always offered. Cats are housed in foster homes and are assessed as to their suitability eg with small children, inexperienced owners, dogs and other pets.

Prior to rehoming all cats undergo a health check, are neutered (if not already), wormed and deflead and microchipped. New owners can also access four weeks of free pet insurance from Petplan.

## Feral Cats

Alley Cats and Kittens was originally founded to help feral and street cats. Without human intervention life for these cats is hard and is often a fight for survival. Male cats fight and get injured while females get pregnant often when only kittens themselves.

This year we have trapped a small number of heavily pregnant semi feral cats. As a responsible rescue we believe that, if we take kittens, we should also take the mum.

Trap-Neuter-Return or **‘** TNR’ is considered to be the most humane and effective method of managing feral and community cats and controlling their population. Our volunteers trap cats and take them for neuter, parasite treatment and ear tip. After recovery they are returned to the area that they know, provided that someone is giving them food and monitoring their wellbeing. Where this is not the case we match the cats with outdoor homes such as stables, farms and allotments. These cats are microchipped and formal adoption contracts are signed.

Where it is ethical to do so we tame kittens. We have a small number of dedicated and experienced volunteers who do this, and this year we have tamed more kittens than ever. We also work alongside other specialist taming rescues.

We have loaned traps and supported people to trap cats who are thought to be lost, so that they can be scanned and reunited. Where there could be an owner in the local area we have offered a paper collar.

In addition to helping feral, stray and unwanted cats and kittens we also assist members of the public with the cost of neutering to enable us to meet our objective of preventing unwanted pregnancies and suffering.

During the year we carried out a range of fundraising activities including a summer fair and a bingo night. These events proved popular and, together with regular donations, provided a valuable source of income for the charity.

## **Public Benefit**

The Trustees have considered the Charity Commission’s guidance regarding public benefit and are satisfied that the Charity met these requirements through its activities as described in this report.

## **Financial Review**

This report covers our first year of reporting as a charity. Our main sources of income were:

- Donations (£29,989)

   - Adoption Fees (£22,695)

-

Our main costs were:

- Veterinary fees (£35,652.20)

- Food and supplies (£7,876.74)

At the end of the year, income (£61,572) exceeded expenditure (£60,220) giving a small surplus of £1,352. Funds available at the end of March 2025 were £70,352.

The charity’s policy is to hold a minimum of between 6 and 12 months unrestricted reserves to allow for any reduction in income levels or unplanned increase in costs. At the end of the reporting year, we held unrestricted reserves equivalent to 14 months expenditure.

## **Future Plans**

Our aim next year is to support more neutering by setting up a scheme to provide additional neuter opportunities. This will focus on cats that have been abandoned, whose kittens will become ferals. The number of feral cats in our area needs a focused response to avoid further unnecessary pregnancies and suffering. We have access to feral pens on multiple sites near to colonies and problem areas. This will enable us to neuter, assess and look to how to best support a lifestyle of their choosing. We also plan to introduce a means tested neuter and microchip scheme for owned pets.

## **Declarations**

The trustees declare that they have unanimously approved this report. Signed on behalf of the charity’s trustees:
