## **Chairman's Report: A Year of Growth and Transformation (Earls Colne Heritage Museum - Year Ending December 31, 2024)**

This report details a significant year for the Earls Colne Heritage Museum, with our official establishment as a charity on April 18, 2024. This milestone fuelled a period of intense activity and considerable progress, which I am pleased to summarise.

## **Key Accomplishments:**

- **Improving Our Exhibits:** We revitalized the first-floor displays.

- **Connecting with More People:** We saw an increase in both museum visitors (435, compared to 390 in 2023) and attendance at our talks and village walks (683, up from 499 in 2023).

- **Honouring Our History:** The unveiling of the Lancasters Memorial, commemorating 15 fallen airmen, was a deeply moving event attended by over 150 people, including family members. Generous donations from individuals and businesses exceeded £3000 to fund this important tribute.

- **Engaging Young Minds:** Our annual educational programme reached 60 Year 4 students from Earls Colne Primary School.

- **Sharing Local Knowledge:** We hosted several well-attended talks throughout the year, notably a major commemoration of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, which drew over 200 attendees. Additionally, seven guided walks highlighted the historical aspects of our village.

- **Preserving Our Past Digitally:** A major project to digitize 25 volumes of newspaper clippings, spanning a century of village history, is now complete. This allows for easy keyword searching and ensures the long-term preservation of this valuable resource.

- **Securing Vital Funding:** We gratefully acknowledge funding received from Earls Colne Parish Council and a £2,500 grant (plus an additional £250) from Braintree District Council to improve the adjacent Atlas Gardens with new planting and informative storyboards.

- **Maintaining Our Home:** Essential repairs and improvements were made to the Water Tower.

- **Strengthening Our Foundation:** On August 16, 2024, we finalized a new, favourable tenancy agreement for the Water Tower until May 4, 2026, which includes an option to purchase the property before that date.

## **Financial Health:**

The Treasurer's report provides a detailed financial overview. It is worth noting the significant growth in our bank balance, from £453 at the charity's inception to over £10,000 by the end of the year. However, securing consistent funding remains a priority for future projects.

## **Looking to the Future: Challenges and Opportunities:**

Our primary challenge is the potential closure of the Museum if we cannot secure the necessary funding to purchase the Water Tower and reimagine our exhibits. This redevelopment is crucial to creating an engaging and welcoming space that attracts visitors and allows us to continue our mission of researching and sharing the stories of Earls Colne, fostering a strong sense of local identity.

## **Gratitude:**

I extend my sincere thanks to our dedicated team of volunteers, our committed board members, our generous donors, and our supportive community partners. Your invaluable contributions are essential to the museum's ongoing success and impact.

## **Our Vision for 2025:**

As we look ahead to 2025, our immediate focus will be on our application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Securing this funding is vital to ensuring the Water Tower remains our permanent home. Alongside this crucial endeavour, we will continue our program of engaging events and our ongoing research into the rich heritage of our community.

Thank you for your continued support. I am optimistic about another successful year for the Earls Colne Heritage Museum
