Grant Making Policy
It is through lh¢ provision of discre.ionary grants that the Johnson Association seeks to fulfil its objective to
support the Se¢ular Clergy of the Ar¢hdiocese. who. on account of age or infirmity. are no longer abte to
¢oniinue their paro¢hial work and to supyt priests who aTe suffering ternpory illness.
The review and governance of the 8fdni making p)licy is an imp)rthnt priority for the Trnsitts. Following
confimation from th¢ A￿hdio¢c5c a Priest has retired. the retired Fyiest may apply for a discrdionary grant.
It is expecied that the appli¢#nt'$ fin#n¢ial orrangem¢nts •r¢ disclosed in full, and th#¢ any major financial
matters are detailed, e.g. the lack of a full pension. financial demands as a result of full-time nursing care.

The Asso¢iation raises funds through an annual sewnd ¢olle¢tion in the Churches of the ArChd1￿¢se of
Birniingham. Donations are also made ihrough Sianding Order payments and ihrough the Association's website.
There were no complaints received by ihe Asso¢iaiion about activities by the Asso¢iation or by a wson on
behalf of the Asso¢iaiion for ihe purpos¢ of fundrgising. The Associaiion h&s taken measures to protect
vulnerable people and other members of the public from the following behaviours in the course of or In
conneciion with fundrnising activiiies..
Unreasonable intrusion on a person's privacy.
Unreasonable persistent appI￿a¢h¢S for the purpose of soliciting or otherwise procuring money or other
property on behalf of the charity.
Placing undue pressure on a person to give money or other property.

Previously, the core of the Association's income was derived from dtsn•tioni and legacies. which by their nature
are subject to flu¢¢u¥tions. To su$toin a level of income sufficient to meet demand5 on its r¢50urc¢$. the
Association requires a significant capiial base and the trustees have maintained an active investmeni policy to
provide a degree of stability and certainty in income levels.
The 8im 1$ lo maintsin and, if pos$ibl¢. increase the real value of the monles invested. In doing this S￿￿1¢ient
income should be genernted to supplement the core income and provide the annual funds needed to meet the
obje¢Eive$ of th¢ As$oci8tion. The Charity regularly reinvests any surplus it receive$ (usually from bequests)
into lis portfolio. lo ensure ihai its inv¢siments or¢ 5e¢ur¢ and 8rowin& and its dividends are suificient to cover
Ihe expecied increase in future 8r4ni applications.

income for the year lotalled £497.531 12025.. £473,705) os shown in note 4. The consisient level of income this
year continues to reflect the current economic Climate and also the need to maintain a balance between income
generation Bnd capital 8rowlh.
During the year there was an overnll increase of 12.8% (net) in the Quilter investment portfolio (2025.. Increase
of 7. l•h).
The yield on investments for the year wa$ 2.26Vo (2025: 2.43Vo). which was in line wllh expe¢ta¢ion$ 8iven the
general market perfomance.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Flnancknl Performance
During the year ended 3 1st March 2026, a higher level of legacies re¢eived of £843.392 (2025 - £107,391) has
led to an increase in total income ¢0 £1,424,002 from £703.332 in 2025. This is ¢omprised of (k)nations and
legacies of £907,695 (2025 - £21821)0) and inves¢ment income of £516.307 (2025- £485,132)-
Toial grants paid diffcily to priests in¢reased to £399.457 frorn £381.985 in the previous year and this
ontributed to Fl increase in total expenditure from £479,731 to £J37,038,
A $urplu$ before investment gains of £886,944, up from £223.601 in 2025, has resulted.
Investmeni values have incr¢a5ed bv £2,048.601, compared to Bn increase of £317.093 in the wevious year and
total funds have incr¢osed by £2,935,545 compared to an increase of £540.694 in 2025.
Total unrestricted ￿ndS as at 3 1st March 2026 were £23,343,396. Lis¢ed fixed asset investments are m4in¢ained
ro provide current and future grants and are therefore not considered by ihe Trn*¢s to be free r¢serv¢s. The
level of free reserves ai 31st March 2026 £1 J79.538. up from £940,727 in ihe previous year.

Going concern
The financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis under the historical cost basis of
a¢¢ounting wle5 modified to account for investments at fair value. Each year the TTUStees review the value of
Ihe invesrment portfolio in Conjunction with the investment managers and the availability of in the short
lerni to ensure the Charity is a going concern. At the time of signing these financial statements. the Trustees
have considered the going concem p051tion and consider that the Charity will be able to continue to operate for a
period of at least 12 monihs from lh¢ date of signing these financial ststements. The Charity has a strong cash
position of £432.837 and nei assets of £23.34m and on that basis, the TNstees have prepared these financial
ststements on a going con¢em basis.
Reserves pollcy
It is the p)licy of the Trus¢ees to maintain free reserves of the charity at tt level which equates to approximately
eighteen to twenty-four months. grant payments, tsking into consideration likely changes in the number of
recipients and the level of grant paid.
Free reserves of £1,379,538 ut 3 1st March 2026 (2025: £940,727) represents over 24 months, grant payments.
Legacies will be allocated to investment fund5 in order to provide incomi e in future years in accordance with the
charity's objectives. The trustees continue to monitor the level of free res¢rves and believe ihat, based upon ihe
curreni value of the investment portfolio, the Association will be able to fulfil its objectives in ihe short to
medium terni.
PLANS FOR THE FUTURE
Our fu￿re objectives are to ensur¢ that sufficient finances are in place to be able to coniinue io satisfy all
successful applications for financial support. The nllmber of Secular Clergy that we support has been growing
each year &8 the number of those retired grows. We must end¢avour to ¢n5ure that we maintain and improve the
value of our investment portfolio to enable us to meet this demand for our resour￿5.

distribution or the legacy has been received. Where the charity has been notified of a forthcoming legacy. but the
amount and timing of receipt is not known, it is recognised in the Ststement of Financial Activities but is included

Investment income is earned through holding assets for investment purposes and is included in the Statement of
Financial Activities when the amount can be measured reliably. Interest income is recognised using the effective interest
