## **FOR THE PERIOD ENDED 30 JUNE 2025** 

## **OBJECTIVES AND AIMS** 

The aims and objectives are set out in the charity governing document and are: 

To relieve the needs of those in need by way of serving and ex-serving military personnel and their dependents who have suffered or are suffering physical mental and/or psychological injuries from their time in service through: 

a) the provision of an avenue for learning and developing arts skills and accessing work opportunities; and 

b) creating a long term community which provides vital links into the wider arts community and a peer support and mentoring system. 

## **PRINCIPAL ACTIVITY** 

Since its inception as a CIO on 11th April 2024, the Soldiers’ Arts Academy (‘SAA’) Charity (the 'Charity') has offered online and in person workshops across a variety of arts’ subjects for members of the armed forces community who have been impacted either mentally and / or physically by their time in service. SAA provides a long-term community with the availability of social connection and interaction on almost a daily basis for at least 36 weeks of the year. 

Using highly trained tutors, SAA has offered free / highly discounted on-line courses in art, poetry, guitar and singing. It has also run a number of in-person three-day retreats in art and sculpture. 

The arts courses and retreats culminated in the organisation and hosting of a number of SAA Art Exhibitions at venues in London, including Mayfair and Euston, and Alnwick; these Exhibitions provided SAA members with opportunities to show-case their work and to offer them for commercial sale, with a small percentage of any proceeds being returned to SAA as contributions towards the costs of the Exhibitions. 

In singing, one of the major achievements during the Period under Review (the ‘Period’) was a collaboration with the Imperial War Museum (‘IWM’), in which the SAA Choir performed an original song, written specifically for the occasion by Laura Wright, the SAA singing tutor, as part of the ‘War in the Mind’ exhibition staged by the IWM. 

In terms of theatre, SAA collaborated with the world-renowned Shakespeare’s Globe for the fifth time. Two of the SAA veterans acted as military consultants working alongside the Globe’s Director to devise a production which was seen by around 40,000 audience members, most of them under 17. 

## **REVIEW OF THE BUSINESS OF THE CHARITY** 

During the Period, the online and in-person workshops and activities were successfully transferred from the Soldiers’ Arts Academy CIC into SAA. As regards financial support, SAA was delighted and enormously grateful for the continued support shown during the Period by The Veterans’ Foundation and The Philip King Charitable Trust through further grant finance and the other donors and grant givers for their invaluable contributions. 

## **PRINCIPAL RISKS AND UNCERTAINTIES** 

Despite seeing a growth in membership and achieving critically acclaimed success in the collaborations with IWM and Shakespeare’s Globe and the SAA Art Exhibitions, SAA has not been able to establish a stable funding base, with much of its funding during the Period being based on a somewhat irregular pattern of grants and donations. 

SAA remains immensely grateful for the long-term support from The Veterans’ Foundation and other significant donors such as The Philip King Charitable Trust. This support, together with other small grants and donations, meant that SAA was able to continue its wide-ranging programme of courses and activities during the Period, but at a lower level than it would have liked. With long waiting lists and a great deal of positive feedback, there is a huge opportunity for SAA to expand its programme to provide a greater range of activities to a much wider audience. However, this will require a level of financial stability that SAA is striving to achieve.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES** 

## **Basis of preparing the financial statements** 

The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention. 

## **Income** 

All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the Charity has entitlement to the funds and it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably. 

## **Expenditure** 

Expenditure is recognised in the period in which it is incurred. 

## **Taxation** 

The Charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities. 

## **Fund Accounting** 

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the Trustees. Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the Charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes. 

## **Donated goods and services** 

Donated services and grants are included in the Statement of Financial Activities when received at the value of the gift to the Charity provided the value of the gift can be measured reliably. 

## **Debtors** 

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount after any trade discount offered. Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due. 

## **Creditors** 

The Charity has creditors which are measured at settlement amounts less any trade discounts.
